Shop owners nervous after brazen heist, video shows shoppers ... (New Zealand Herald)

A group, armed with batons, robber Stewart Dawson jewellers on Tuesday afternoon.

But no firearms were involved. A policeman on the scene told the Herald that the car was used by the fleeing offenders and had been stolen. Another nearby worker said she thought the men had guns because of the consistency of the smashing sound. Blood was splattered down the side of the car and jewellery was lying beside it. A Herald reporter at the scene said police officers were outside the jewellery store after the robbery, talking to clearly shaken witnesses, some of whom were in need of comfort. She said she assumed the batons were guns at first. A worker at the nearby Max fashion store said at the time she heard glass shattering and a woman screaming, and rushed outside to see what was happening. The worker said she quickly rolled down the shutters on the Max store, rushed customers into the back room, and locked the door. They said they were disgusted with the number of ram raids and burglaries occurring. The offenders entered the jewellery store on the upper level of the mall about 5pm, smashing cabinets with batons and snatching expensive jewellery before fleeing. A retail worker at Westfield St Lukes said they and others are very nervous and anxious today after the brazen daylight robbery at the mall. The retailer said mall management had been asking retailers how they were doing after the robbery.

He said a recent survey of businesses had shown a clear concern and a sense no one was immune to the risk across the city. Minister of Police Chris Hipkins said the package was designed to prevent young people involved in crime being pushed further into a life of adult crime, but harsher punishments across the board would not work. Goodwin said this response was "farcical" as the pressure fell on the landlord to pay for the application, installation, maintenance and any upgrades to the security measures. They said they were disgusted with the number of ram raids and burglaries occurring. She said the group were chased out by other shoppers and staff, a moment that was captured on video. "I'm afraid to take my kids to the mall now and I'm scared myself of going to public shops by myself." The woman said it was frightening how confident and "gutsy" the group appeared.
