'I was a machine': England's Abby Dow on her World Cup recovery (The Guardian)

The wing tells Robert Kitson she is targeting an appearance in England's opening Rugby World Cup game less than six months after breaking a leg.

Dow, who has been studying mechanical engineering at Imperial College, London, compares the feeling to a looming set of exams – “That was the last time I was under this sort of stress and pressure” – but also yearns for England to tap into the same feelgood female sports vibe enjoyed by the Lionesses in the summer. “The only other guy who has had a break like me has been Harlequins’ Will Evans and he got back in eight or nine months. “I basically was a machine.” The surgery involved quite a big operation and the surgeon can’t say: ‘You’re going to make it.’” “You always hear the horror stories of that person who was on form and then all of a sudden gets injured and misses out. Lying on a stretcher in the tunnel, with her family and friends around her, she thought her World Cup dream was over.

We caught up with the England star after she was included in Simon Middleton's squad for New Zealand just over five months after suffering a broken leg.

An injury like this can come at the wrong time and it just shows the mindset that she has, it’s not going to stop her.” Now I'm about to go and sit all my exams.” “It also just shows the kind of mindset she has too. The best we can do is try’,” Dow said. Dow was also able to seek advice from male Harlequins flanker Will Evans, who suffered a similar injury in 2021. “I just remember being in that tunnel and my friends and family came.

Having people say it was a possibility from it being unlikely to very likely and then to being selected has made it a very fortunate transition. It's not as simple as physically getting her on to the field. So to have that support and to be able to plan ahead as a result has helped a lot in how I’ve been able to come back.’ I’m just so grateful I’ve been able to get back in time. ‘Her attitude is fantastic and she can't wait to play. ‘It would have been a bigger gamble not to take her,’ Middleton said of Dow. With the help of England’s medical team, a close support network and no little sacrifice from herself, the Wasps back has returned to fitness quickly enough to be in Simon Middleton’s squad. Dow was expected to be out for nine months. ‘For the first two or three or months, the million dollar question was whether I was on track. Play was stopped for nearly 15 minutes while she was treated before being taken to hospital. Then we tried to squeeze it down to six. It was Dow’s first serious injury and surgery was required.

Southgate admits younger England players felt pressure in Nations ... (The Guardian)

Gareth Southgate has admitted some of his younger England players felt the weight of the shirt during a high-stress Nations League get-together.

“Against Italy we didn’t need the left-back cover [on the bench]; against Germany, we did because of the way we went with the team, so we needed Chilly on the bench. We have to keep instilling the belief and the confidence in them to be able to do it.” He has got the character to get over this because he’s a boy that has been from Sheffield United to Hull City … The manager added on Monday night that he had to “focus on our best players – unless that situation becomes untenable”. “We have talked about how the shirt feels and they are experiencing for the first time a little bit what some of the older ones have been through in the past. But Southgate was delighted with the quality and character they showed to take a 3-2 lead, even though a soft, late concession gave Germany a draw – feeling the emotion and experience would bolster them for the World Cup in Qatar, which kicks off in late November.

This England review: Boris Johnson drama is 'too soon' (BBC News)

Kenneth Branagh is "utterly convincing" as former UK PM in This England – but a "fiction based on real events" is flawed when those events are still ...

Cut to a shot of thousands of bats flying from a cave and then a shot of a Chinese wet market. You would love to be a fly on the wall if Day and Cummings ever meet. In the first episode Johnson gives a triumphant post-election speech to jubilant staff at Conservative Party HQ, promising that 2020 will be "a year of prosperity, growth and hope". There are cowled figures standing by a river and a sombre-looking Carrie holding a screaming baby while some of Johnson's adult children intone quasi-mystical reproaches to their father. And why "a fiction based on real events" rather than a documentary? How many scenes of exhausted medics on the phone relaying the devastating news of the death of a loved one to the bereaved? And amidst all the drama about the politicians, there are the stories of ordinary people afflicted with the virus and then – more often than not – dying. We move rapidly from Downing Street to a hospital, the Department of Health, a Sage meeting, a care home. Kenneth Branagh [suggested](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/kenneth-branagh-on-playing-boris-he-has-a-certain-loneliness-8w0bqmq0b): "Any way of understanding it better is important." April 23rd is the date on which Shakespeare's birthday is generally marked and the bard is threaded through this drama. This is the first instance of the pretty heavy-handed dramatic irony that features regularly in episode one. It opens with the on-screen notice "This is a fiction based on real events"; a tricksy formulation that allows the filmmakers to claim verisimilitude while also exercising a considerable amount of artistic licence.

To leave them out is like making a drama about the Titanic and omitting the iceberg. It is sprawling and baggy and yes, it should have touched on the parties. Yet there is also the Boris who is prone to having Churchill’s black dogs of depression at his heel; the Boris who is kind to his beloved mother, who gets up at night to feed the baby. Also having a bad time of it is Carrie Johnson (Ophelia Lovibond), who at one point is seen on the toilet. Yet the Government is slow to act on lockdown, on testing, on protective equipment. It is 2019 and Johnson has won the leadership.

'This England' review: Kenneth Branagh and the big, blond buffoon (NME.com)

Thought you'd seen the last of Boris Johnson on telly? Well Michael Winterbottom's 'This England', starring Kenneth Branagh, will shock you.

At times This England feels like BBC political satire The Thick of It, especially in scenes where Cummings and his cronies are brainstorming PR slogans to win the public trust. As Boris blithely shakes hands with patients (not doing so will be like “Churchill hiding in a bunker”, he says), even his pregnant wife Carrie (Ophelia Lovibond) gets the fear and scuttles back to her flat in Camberwell to socially distance from her own husband. Still, this isn’t an entire hatchet job, with Boris even painted sympathetically when he contracts the virus (though his hallucinations, all shot in black-and-white like a bad classic movie, we could do without).

This England is a fascinating time capsule series, unearthed too soon (Radio Times)

Kenneth Branagh as Boris Johnson in This England. Phil Fisk/Sky UK. By. James Hibbs. Published: Wednesday, 28th September ...

It might be that in 10 years time it is seen as a failure, or it could be seen as a triumph. This England is a deep-dive into a period of time in British life, told through the lens of how we all viewed it and experienced it while it was happening. For those who lost loved ones to COVID or who are still deeply affected by the events of 2020, there's no doubt some of the scenes in This England will be deeply upsetting. The first is the politics of it all. This is almost certainly the case, yet with time, even understandable knee-jerk reactions and intuitions can fade, and more viewers might be able to watch the drama soberly and judge it as such. At the time when This England was first developed, it was the almost unquestioned consensus that the virus had developed in bats before being spread to humans. Everyone wants to minimise the impact on people's lives and wants to minimise deaths and wants to be as rapid as possible. It's a day-by-day recreation of exactly what Winterbottom and his team understand to have been happening at the time, even down to individual experiences in care homes. It's difficult to think of an event in recent memory which shaped our daily life in the way COVID did, or which was as all-consuming. The depiction of the Government is not exactly a glowing one, as Number 10 is shown to focus almost all of its attention on PR alone, particularly before the worst hits. This explanation too falls apart, given that the pandemic was the biggest, most widely-acknowledged event the country has experienced in most of our lifetimes. It's engaging, well-paced and Branagh and the rest of the cast are all fantastic (Andrew Buchan is a particular stand-out as Matt Hancock).

This England, review: Branagh fails to get under Boris's skin – and ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Kenneth Branagh's bad wig and prosthetics overshadow what could have been a serious drama about the pandemic and lockdown.

This England is critical of the government but it isn’t a hatchet job on Johnson. The script also introduces, at the outset, the fact that Johnson is working on a biography of Shakespeare. This is a device allowing Branagh to quote the Bard at regular intervals, and gives the drama its title. The problem is that other dramas have told this story far better - think of It contains precisely one joke, which is that Johnson is forever palming off Dilyn the dog on unlucky staffers, handing them a poo bag as he ushers them towards the door. The writers have got his number. Early photographs of Branagh as Boris and Ophelia Lovibond as Carrie may have led you to believe that this would be a satire, and that it would be fun. Meetings between Johnson and Dominic Cummings (Simon Paisley Day) and the Downing Street communications director, Lee Cain (Derek Barr, the best thing here). This is a deeply serious drama about the government’s Covid response. [on the prosthetic make-up](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/england-turning-branagh-boris-how-did-do/). But the dodgy thatch worn by Kenneth Branagh is an early portent of doom. Perhaps Boris Johnson’s hair is so unruly that it simply can’t be replicated.
