Track sealant shaping as major variable for Bathurst 1000 (Speedcafe)

Sealant which was recently laid on the Mount Panorama circuit is shaping as a major variable in this weekend's Repco Bathurst 1000.

“I think the bigger question is how the epoxy reacts after the cars run on the race track tomorrow in the rain and whether the grip comes back to the same level that we had this afternoon.” “The track was fully dry for the majority [of Practice 2] – there was a little bit of a shower in the middle there, which probably hurt lap time for a little while – but track’s really very fast. “The forecast for Sunday is that at 11 o’clock race start [11:15 local time/AEDT] that it will stop raining, and the track will be dry in the afternoon,” he added. A popular opinion is that an epoxy which was used to seal cracks in the track surface has created a material increase in grip, which raises the question of how it will evolve over the following three days of activity. Fifth place was George Gutierrez (Colorado) who had a big spin after Skyline at the end of the session but with no damage. From a damp start, the track showed semblance of drying and his times were improving to a last lap effort of 2 minutes 38.2684 seconds. The practice sessions for the final round occurred in contrasting conditions, wet in the first and dry in the second. In Pro Am Geoff Emery showed the way ahead of Sam Shahin, Adrian Flack and Liam Talbot. Twelfth placed Hayden Hume, behind Ryan Gilroy and Campbell Logan, also finished in drama when he clouted the wall at Skyline. The session started in misty rain and was barely under way when it was red flagged due to Max Vidau beaching at Hell Corner.

EPOXY. It's a word that may never before have been uttered so many times at a racetrack prior to yesterday's action at the Repco Bathurst 1000.

I mean someone can probably explain it but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. “They have got all year to maintain the circuit, I don’t know why they need to do it on (race week), but we’ll just do what we can do and control the things we can control and get on with it.” “The track surface here has been really good, it doesn’t get raced on all year so I don’t know what’s going on but I guess it’s the same for everyone so I don’t really need to complain too much.

After his last win in 2012, he has been at odds with The Mountain: He was leading when he ran out of fuel in 2014 on the last lap, was leading when he received a penalty for incorrectly passing the safety car in 2015, was leading after being given a penalty for causing an incident late in the race in 2016, and has missed out in his last few attempts. While the #51 is sure to stir emotions in the nostalgic, with neither driver having any significant seat time of late, expectations for the pair are low. The pair are making their Bathurst debut in a feel-good story for the sport. Having already tasted GTE machinery in the ELMS and a tilt at the Spa 24 hours with Grove Racing, Payne is an exciting name to keep an eye on. Will was in a race-winning position in the last race of the championship before a mix-up in the pit lane saw the car released without a tyre fully secured. Percat was the last rookie to win the 1000, playing co-driver to Garth Tander, who withstood an onslaught from Craig Lowndes in the latter stages of the 2011 race. The mix of experience and youth in the #5 car would be the next best bet for the team, with 2010 series champion Courtney finding a new lease of life at the team, and highly rated youngster Zak Best capable of some serious pace. He was at the heart of DJR Team Penske’s manipulation of the race in 2019, enabling team-mate Scott McLaughlin his chance of victory. In any conditions, in any race situation, Van Gisbergen and the team at Triple Eight Race Engineering have had the pace to overcome the field and put themselves in the box seat for victory. Shane Van Gisbergen had his fair share of stories at The Mountain; in 2014 he was in the box seat in what was a crazy race, until a stall in the pit stop compounded by a broken starter motor not refiring the car dropped him from an assured position to completely out of the fight. This year will hold a special place for the Australian Supercars championship; with the arrival of the GM Camaro as part of Supercars Gen 3 in 2023, this year’s 1000 will be the final edition to feature the Holden name on the grid. All of the legends in the sport can trace their story back to The Mountain; stories of triumph, of heartbreak, of near misses or of fairytales.

He was frustrated again later in the session with a dominant first sector before finding traffic in the middle third of the lap and forcing him to back off. A stewards report stated Best’s buggy was travelling at “excessive speed” during the track walk and with occupants not wearing seatbelts. “It was pretty dicey with the mixed conditions,” van Gisbergen said of his Thursday morning practice session, after slamming into the wall and narrowly avoiding a disastrous crash. Having only been 14th quickest on Thursday, he responded by surging up to fourth late in the session in an impressive finish. Early in the session, he was on track for a forecast 2:04.3s lap until a final-corner brake lock-up ruined his lap. In a late flurry of barnstorming laps, Will Davison emerged atop the charts with a sizzling 2:04.208s in his Shell V-Power Mustang. Jones appeared not to see the series leader, who smashed into Jones’s right rear corner and barged him into the wall in a serious shunt. That marker would stand for most of the session, before Waters improved further to 2:04.407s, which would end up good enough for second behind Davison. I reckon we’re gonna see one of the toughest sessions in the history of the Mountain. It was one of those sessions where it wasn’t too bad to watch it from the garage.” After locking the rear tyres, he recovered with a flick-spin to continue onwards. Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day was wildcard entrant Richie Stanaway, who finished fifth in his first Supercars appearance since 2019, using the Erebus/Boost Mobile built Commodore ZB.

There were 57 active warnings in place across the state as at 4pm on Friday. It’s a terribly hard way to learn a lesson for society.” We’re really asking people to plan accordingly,” he said. If it’s flooded, forget it - turn around and find another way.” Severe thunderstorms were expected spread to the southern interior of Queensland on Saturday, accompanied by heavy rainfall, with showers and thunderstorms extending across the east and south-east of the state on Sunday. “It wasn’t very long ago we had a five-year-old boy ... Minor flooding was expected to continue in southern and south-west Queensland, with minor flood warnings issued for the Barcoo River and Cooper Creek, Bokhara River, Bulloo River, Macintyre River, Paroo River. “Driving through flood waters could be the last decision you make.” In Sydney, the heaviest rain was expected on Saturday, causing a high-risk day for the already saturated city with warnings of renewed river flooding to the city’s west months after record peaks were observed. A trough and cold front moved across NSW on Friday, bringing further widespread rain to the eastern half of the state including the western slopes and ranges, central NSW and the south coast. “With the combination of locally falling rain and flood peaks moving downstream, extensive and significant riverine flooding is likely for many inland catchments,” the BoM said in a statement.

Van Gisbergen rocketed up the leaderboard on successive fast laps to spend a brief period at the top before the Waters and Mostert show resumed. Entering the final two minutes, Waters, Holdsworth and Mostert were leading the way in the 2:23s while De Pasquale sat on the bubble just ahead of Heimgartner and Whincup, only for Brown to bump the #100 Shell V-Power Racing Team driver out. Mostert and Waters traded blows lap after lap, as the fastest time was slashed to a 2:24.6876s by the mid-point of the 40-minute session, set by the Monster Energy Mustang driver. The session started with an immediate pair of scares for Tickford Racing teammates Thomas Randle and Jake Kostecki as Chaz Mostert skated around to set the initial benchmark at a 2:29.2143s. That incident may have crushed the dreams of some looking for a last-ditch flyer, and it puts an element of doubt over van Gisbergen’s place in the Top 10 Shootout having qualified fourth. And it ended in controversy, with Shane van Gisbergen and Macauley Jones colliding at the Esses in the dying stages, resulting in the latter hitting the wall heavily.
