Early crash delivers ominous warning as weather takes a turn ... (Fox Sports)

It's here. 161 laps around Mount Panorama, 1000 kilometres in all. The Great Race – the 2022 Bathurst 1000 – begins at 11.15am AEDT.

The first race of the day delivered an ominous warning of what could be to come for the remainder of the day. It is a great result after the Top 10 Shootout was cancelled. There are wonderful stories all up and down the grid. From the returning veterans lighting up the track, to the stunning crashes, to the wild weather causing absolute chaos and the first cancellation of the Top 10 Shootout in its 44-year history. The weather is set to play a crucial role, as it has all weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a 60 per cent chance of any rain, with just 0 to 2mm likely. But the green flag waved and the action began in earnest – before ending in tragedy. But for James Courtney, this weekend is like no other. The Great Race – the 2022 Bathurst 1000 – begins at 11.15am AEDT. Cameron Waters, twice runner-up, starts from pole (with James Moffat), but is only second-favourite with the bookies behind 2020 winner Shane van Gisbergen. 42-year-old Dontas has been a mainstay of the SuperUtes competition, having stood on the podium in the Bathurst round of the competition in the past. 161 laps around Mount Panorama, 1000 kilometres in all.

The Kiwi motor racing ace once again showed there's daylight between himself any everyone else in a Supercar, winning Australia's biggest event.

A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. There was drama after the first corner with a number of cars colliding and spinning along mountain straight. With 23 laps to go Evans’ partner Jack Smith clipped a wall at Reid Park and limped back to the pits, before retiring while Pither’s car was also losing a lot of pace and he was shown a mechanical black flag. With 100 of the 161 laps to go, the top three was Tander David Russell and Anton de Pasquale, with 24 of the 28 cars left in the race. Zak Best came out the worst and his race was already over, while Kiwi Jaxon Evans needed to get the front of his car covered with race tape to continue. When they restarted, with the racing coming down to a 38-lap shootout the top three was van Gisbergen, Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert. * [Bathurst top 10 shootout cancelled, Cam Waters to start from pole position](https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/motorsport/130112380/bathurst-top-10-shootout-cancelled-cam-waters-to-start-from-pole-position?rm=a) [He also came third in his category and ninth overall in the WRC's Rally New Zealand ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwj1mo_JyNL6AhV89jgGHa0uCtEQFnoECBAQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stuff.co.nz%2Fsport%2Fmotorsport%2F130048923%2Ffinlands-kalle-rovanper-creates-history-at-rally-nz-as-wrcs-youngest-champion&usg=AOvVaw1swVwPRiTpSej9N3hz_AQK)and now has won Bathurst again, to pick up a record-breaking 19th Supercars victory of the season, surpassing Scott McLaughlin. Shane van Gisbergen wins Bathurst 1000 after brutal start in ... (The Guardian)

The New Zealander sealed a repeat of his 2020 triumph with Garth Tander on a day when six safety cars were deployed inside 61 laps.

He has room to extend his record with legs at the Gold Coast and Adelaide to come. He now has the most wins in a season with 19, eclipsing the previous record of 18 by Scott McLaughlin. Davison’s late crash meant his teammate and brother Alex’s record of finishing every start at Bathurst came to an end. “It’s a privilege to add to the tally of Holden wins,” van Gisbergen said. He veered across the track and was smashed into by Dale Wood’s Holden, and Matt Campbell’s Ford Mustang joined the pile-up. When racing resumed on lap five, Zane Goddard’s Mustang left the track as he attempted to overtake and lost control re-joining the tarmac.

Van Gisbergen started to stretch an advantage, setting a 2:06.2 to set the fastest lap of the race, to which Mostert responded with a 2:06.3 the next lap around. The top three began to escape, with Feeney holding up Waters, Holdsworth and the pair of Dick Johnson Mustangs, until a wide moment at The Chase allowed Waters and Holdsworth to pass. A mix of co-drivers and main-game drivers took the restart on lap 46, with Moffat stepping into the #6 trying to defend from the #99 Erebus car with Kostecki still at the wheel. On board replays suggested a missed downshift while braking for the Elbow caused the car to burst into wheelspin, with Nick unable to control the slide, tagging the wall on both sides of the track. The track began to dry on the resumption of action, with the #100 Dick Johnson Racing car with Tony D’Alberto at the wheel, as the only car not to stop. The fifth Safety Car of the afternoon was called immediately after, required to retrieve the #96 Brad Jones Racing Commodore from the gravel trap at Pit Entry. This backed up the group behind, with Mostert looking to break through, aborting a move at the Cutting before throwing it down the inside of Kostecki at the Elbow. Kostecki ran wide at the apex, getting on to the grass, and getting bogged in the sodden grass. Goddard speared across the track, colliding with the #8 Brad Jones Racing car of Dale Wood, and leaving Matt Campbell in the #26 Grove Racing Commodore nowhere to go. Whincup hit a puddle and burst into wheelspin at the same time De Pasquale put two wheels on the grass, and in the melee the #9 got a tap and spun ahead of the group, with #88 pitched into a spin as well. An alternate strategy to put Coulthard in against the main-game drivers to allow Mostert the opportunity to race against the co-drivers later in the race saw them finally break through the back end of the top 10, fighting again with the #99 Erebus Motorsport Commodore, and the #6 Tickford Racing Mustang. They had to contend with a 5 second penalty for an unsafe release early in the day, and were off strategy to try and compensate.

“If I could get to the front in the first stint, great. I got a couple at the start but I gave a few up at the early stint because it was just out of control. Because I knew full well if I couldn’t get to the front, he was (gestures to van Gisbergen).” It was just getting through that phase, and just having that mindset — I don’t have anything to prove. In the end, Tander’s calm, composed stints provided the perfect co-driver performance. Tander said: “We spoke last night in the car on the way back to the house. Mark Skaife said: “It was pretty mad. The outrageous chaos of the opening 57 laps – with six safety cars – left the paddock stunned. It was crazy stuff. Supercars: Shane van Gisbergen wins second Bathurst 1000 title (NZME)

Van Gisbergen sent Holden out perfectly in the brand's final Bathurst 1000 in a thrilling and chaotic race...

Campbell had nowhere to go when Goddard speared back onto the track and copped the heaviest hit. Tander has won all five of his Bathurst crowns in a Holden. He should seal back-to-back crowns in the next round on the Gold Coast. The win gave van Gisbergen and co-driver Tander their second Bathurst 1000 win together after their victory in the 2020 race. Van Gisbergen continued his season of dominance to claim a record-breaking 19th season win – passing Scott McLaughlin's 2019 benchmark – to win in the biggest race of the year. After early carnage in a chaotic start to the Great Race, van Gisbergen again underlined his brilliance to hold off a fierce challenge from defending Bathurst 1000 champion Chaz Mostert in a thrilling finish to the endurance classic.
