Tom Cruise to become first actor to shoot film in space, teams up ... (Economic Times)

The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman and the 60-year-old Hollywood veteran are working on a concept for a movie that will reportedly be shot in space.

The views expressed here are that of the respective authors/ entities and do not represent the views of Economic Times (ET). The project was initially slated for 2020, but the Covid-19 outbreak put the project on hold. This year, the prestigious film festival has chosen India as the 'country of honour'. After crashing into a building, Cruise was spotted dangling in midair in his safety strap before climbing onto the roof and stumbling toward the team. Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible, posted a rare photo of Cruise completing a pretty outrageous stunt on his 60th birthday in July. Cruise will be the first movie celebrity to film on the International Space Station if the project is successful.

It dates back to the 1600s and is the current headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (a branch of Pure Land Buddhism ). Apparently the film had a specialist VFX crew that filmed from the rim of the massive volcano (which is so big it makes up 75 per cent of the Island of Maui). You might remember Cruise in Austin Powers in Goldmember for his glasses and his comical blue jacket, but do you also remember the extraordinary landscape of Moab in Utah? Just like with Westminster Abbey, filming there is a huge honour - the Cathedral is the fifth largest church in the world and is the world’s largest gothic church. But climbing the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which is a whopping 829.8 metres tall, was a task even for the veteran actor. In Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Cruise’s team reportedly shut down the entire Marrakech Highway (which runs from Marrakesh to Casablanca) for 14 days to film an epic car chase. The cars whizz past the famous Kasbah of the Udayas, through Rabat’s Old Medina, and through Casablanca’s Derb Sultan district (one of the city’s oldest and largest areas). But the actor is not one to shy away from challenges, and with a track record of smash-hit films (his most recent film, Top Gun: Maverick, made $1.4 billion worldwide) if anyone can do it, it’s Cruise. As a result of the ongoing conflict, Russia has announced it will be pulling out of the ISS after 2024, and has been blocking access to the Soyuz rockets (the Russian rocket that takes astronauts and cosmonauts to and from the ISS and launches from Russia’s neighbour Kazakhstan). The ISS has been trying to find a replacement spacecraft - and is, according to Reuters, currently in talks with Elon Musk’s Space X and Japan to plug the hole. [ISS](/topic/iss), which is shared by NASA, Japan, Russia, Canada and Europe, is an observational research site that is designed to support a crew of six people. It would make Cruise the first actor ever to shoot a film in space.
