We are building on the same foundation that has made The Sims compelling for generations of players and pushing the boundaries to create new experiences. Earlier this year, Maxis [added sexual orientation as a feature](/articles/the-sims-4-adds-sexual-orientation-as-a-feature) after years of community requests, and plans to continue honing how it works over time to be ever more inclusive to more orientations and genders. [Our review of The Sims 4 at launch](/games/the-sims-4) said it succeeded "in being a deep and complex game when it comes to Sim interactions, with lots of entertaining emotional potential," but at the time didn't feel it was living up to its full potential. Additionally, we saw the same game file copied on both a PC and a mobile device, with Maxis revealing that Project Rene will be playable across multiple supported devices. This included a demonstration of editing a bed furniture piece-by-piece, adjusting elements such as the bedspread color and pattern, and the design and shape of the footboard. The working title, for now, is "Project Rene," and it was first shown off during today's Behind the Sims Summit.
As part of its first ever Behind the Sims Summit Stream event, EA has given a "super early" look at its next Sims game,…

And while it repeatedly stressed that Project Rene is still early in development, it did share some initial footage highlighting some of the concepts the team is currently playing with. All this will be supported across a range of devices, so players can, say, use a mobile device to continue building with their friend on PC.

This greatly dials down the risk of clicking a shady link and getting a computer virus. The team also showed off tests for new library sharing features and cross-platform play. Instead of a basic pre-made bed, the revamped interface showed the ability to customize the bed's base and footboard. The development team will continue to release game updates and Sims Delivery Express drops to keep the base game fresh and fun. The new teased interface looks like a program you'd use as an interior designer, which would greatly elevate the realism of The Sims. The Sims 5 wasn't explicitly mentioned and because this is such an early sneak peek, it's likely that the final iteration of Project Rene will look quite different.
The Sims 4 has gone free-to-play, but EA and Maxis appear to looking ahead to the future of the Sims franchise.

"We are building the next generation Sims game and platform, reimagining the Sims you know and love with new ways to play," VP of Franchise Creative Lyndsay Pearson said during Tuesday's stream. As promised back last month, The Sims 4 has officially gone free-to-play.
While there are many independent mod sites like The Sims Resource, this official CC destination will only be open to invited modders.
But when it does, it’ll be interesting to see what ripple effects it might have on the independent and creator-driven Sims modding sites. (It seems likely that more risque CC will be excluded.) Existing sites are much more open, which is crucial for those just getting started. The Sims Resource, for example, says it has a submissions team that makes sure content is appropriate, virus-free, and of decent quality. But others utilize Tumblr or follow the websites of well-known creators like Deaderpool, who makes the [ubiquitous MC Command Center mod](https://deaderpool-mccc.com/#/). There is an enormous amount of The Sims CC out there, but it’s often scattered across sites, something Electronic Arts hopes to change. It can be in the form of hair, clothes, nails, or skin textures in the Create-a-Sim maker, or it can look like Build Mode features, such as furniture, wall and floor styles, plants, or other items.

The two new expansions are due within the next year, according to Maxis, and changes to infants will arrive sometime in early 2023. Expansion packs are the most major; “kits” are small, like the ability to dust or items for a perfect country kitchen, while stuff packs and game packs are in the middle, like adding new careers, skills, or supernatural elements like vampires and werewolves. This included two colorful images of “new worlds,” with one that looks a little like San Francisco (with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background), as well as images of cute new outfits and room layouts, and bedside storage for keepsakes and dentures. The developer also revealed changes coming to the infant life stage in 2023.

Players have been milking bassinet interactions as much as possible, if not aging up their babies immediately upon returning from the hospital. The mini trailer only teased the update as coming in 2023, so still no babies just yet. This was a big change for the game as non-object-like babies and toddlers were in The Sims games for years before they inexplicably vanished upon The Sims 4’s launch.
