The Conservative Party revolt against Liz Truss's brief tenure as prime minister comes just a few months after it deposed its previous leader Boris Johnson.
“The British people deserve so much better than this revolving door of chaos.” YouGov, the pollster, said that she was the most unpopular prime minister the organization has ever tracked. But her plans, which included billions of unfunded tax cuts, spooked the markets and sent the pound plunging. I spoke to the king and notified him that I was resigning,” she said in front of her residence at Downing Street. The previous record-holder for shortest-serving prime minister was George Canning, who lasted 119 days. Truss has only been in office for 44 days.

Braverman was replaced by another Conservative whom Truss had pushed out of her cabinet just six weeks earlier when she took office. Within days, Hunt had almost entirely canceled the remainder of Truss' economic program, and as opponents inside and outside her Conservative Party began calling for her to step down, another senior cabinet member, interior minister Suella Braverman, was herself forced to resign for sending a sensitive document from a personal email account. A series of significant missteps meant that much of the political vision she outlined during her campaign for leader was ditched after seriously adverse reactions from financial markets.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has quit after just 44 days in office - bowing to the inevitable after a tumultuous term in which her policies triggered t.
Johnson ally and former Foreign Secretary Truss swept past former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak in September to become Britain's third female prime minister - and the last leader to meet with Queen Elizabeth II. The pro-EU prime minister decided to resolve the debate by calling for a nationwide referendum on Britain's membership in the bloc. With almost 52 per cent voting to leave and 48 per cent to remain, the 2016 referendum resulted in a divisive Brexit. He was the first sitting UK prime minister to be punished for breaking the law. The scandal, dubbed "partygate" by the British press, triggered a wave of disgust across Britain, especially among those who were not permitted to attend the funerals of loved ones who died during the pandemic. He said the government will need to save billions of pounds and there are "many difficult decisions" to be made before he sets out a medium-term fiscal plan on October 31. It was a tumultuous time mired in frustration in Brussels and discord in Westminster. Truss proved it true today, but the shakeup at the top is hardly an outlier in the recent history of Britain's Conservatives, whose latest troubles have been years in the making. Another, Steve Double, said of Truss: "She isn't up to the job, sadly." Truss' downfall was also hastened by the resignation on Wednesday of Home Secretary Suella Braverman. Whoever succeeds Truss will be the country's third prime minister this year alone. Truss, who said she will remain in office until a replacement is chosen, has been prime minister for just 44 days.
Liz Truss has announced she will resign, which means there will now be another leadership election to decide who becomes the next Conservative leader and prime minister. The contest to replace her is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
The former barrister is a Brexit supporter who was attorney general in Boris Johnson's government. However, he still has allies both in Parliament and the party membership in general. Although Ms Braverman's departure was ostensibly about a data breach, her angry resignation letter hinted at a disagreement over immigration. Mr Sunak only became an MP in 2015, for the North Yorkshire constituency of Richmond. Her parents emigrated to the UK in the 1960s from Kenya and Mauritius, and both spent time in local politics - with her mother being a councillor for 16 years. He and others were subsequently fined for Covid breaches. Although a relatively junior minister, she won the support of senior Conservative Michael Gove, and drew attention for her attacks on so-called "woke" culture. After Mr Johnson stood down, there had been suggestions Mr Wallace could run - particularly as he was topping polls run by the Conservative Home website - however he opted to support Ms Truss instead, describing her as "authentic". Despite his opposition to Brexit, Mr Wallace has been a key supporter of Boris Johnson and was rewarded with a cabinet post in 2019. With just a week to choose a new leader, many of the contenders are likely to be familiar faces, and none more so than the man who was prime minister just weeks ago. After backing Ms Truss, she was appointed leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council - which meant she presided over the Accession Council for the new king. This didn't come easily to a man who saw himself as a low tax and spend Conservative on the Thatcherite wing of the party but it did boost his popularity.

The mood in the House of Commons was like closing time at a biker bar. On day seven of the lettuce cam, shortly after Truss announced her resignation, the livestream caption changed to: "This lettuce outlasted Liz Truss". Liz Truss became the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history overnight. Henry Cooke explains how this all happened and what might happen next.
The party has a right to change its leader as much as it wants during that period. Yet there is almost no incentive for the Tories to go to the people. She is also on the right of the party. However one of the core issues for Truss was that she didn’t really have a mandate, so there is a chance a new leader would feel they really did need a new mandate. Rishi Sunak hasn’t declared but has a lot of declared support already, and is the bookies’ favourite. Eventually the chair of the 1922 committee – basically the leader of the backbench party – went to meet her, likely to tell her it was over, and if she fought it things would get even uglier. Sunak was chancellor during Covid-19 and ran against Truss in the leadership race, winning among his fellow MPs but losing to the members. If there are two, an “indicative vote” will be held by MPs but then the final say is handed over to party members in an online vote. But then, just because the day would not stop, along came a parliamentary vote on fracking, set up by Labour to embarrass the Tories. Braverman had run against Truss over the summer leadership election and then supported her, giving her the crucial boost she needed to get to the run off with Rishi Sunak. It also means that all Tory members who voted against their party would “lose the whip” – essentially suspending them from the party. Today she resigned – leaving open the possibility of Johnson returning to power.

The immediate frontrunners to take over as Prime Minister are former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt, who were both beaten by Truss in September’s party leadership election. She said the UK had been “held back for too long by low economic growth” and that she was elected by her party to change this. Other frontrunners in the leadership contest are likely to be Sunak - who knifed Johnson in the back, leading to his resignation earlier this year - and Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt. The PM had been told about the claims back in 2019 — and was even said to have remarked “Pincher by name, pincher by nature” — but still handed him the key job. Johnson is pressing former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to reach out and “get back together” in a remarkable olive branch after their public falling out at the top of government.

The U.K. political drama will have ripple effects in the U.S.. Britain's Former Prime Minister Liz Truss addresses the media. ... Queen Elizabeth II lasted more ...
After falling to parity with the U.S. The plans, announced Sept. Given Johnson’s ability to dominate the media and charm his colleagues, his chances are likely to increase as the race wears on. The reign of Elizabeth Truss lasted less than seven weeks. Back then, Johnson was derided as an unethical liar by many of his colleagues, senior civil servants and the broader public. The so-called “special relationship” between the U.S. Unlike Truss, bank Governor Andrew Bailey still has his job. Getting there would require the request of more than 100 MPs. Queen Elizabeth II lasted more than seven decades in the job. If more than two candidates reach that threshold, then Conservative Party members would pick their preferred prime minister. You likely didn’t appreciate the balance you saw. Have you been checking your 401k balance lately?
Truss was a profile in failure. But her downfall also reflects deep divisions within Britain's Conservative Party.
[who will replace Truss.](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/10/20/uk-liz-truss-why-how-resignation/?itid=lb_liz-trusss-resignation_6) Truss said that there would be a leadership election to replace her “to be completed within the next week.” She said that she would “remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen.” These are the [most prominent contenders. According to new polling released Tuesday, [only 10 percent of the country viewed Truss favorably](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/18/britain-truss-conservative/?itid=lb_liz-trusss-resignation_5). Why did she resign?: Truss came to office with a vision for a low-tax, small government state. There were glimpses of schadenfreude and some sly smiles from leaders who sat on the other side of Brexit negotiations. But because the Tories, led by Johnson, won a general election in 2019, they don’t have to submit to another vote until 2024. The previous record-holder for shortest-serving prime minister was George Canning, who lasted 119 days — from April 12, 1827, until his death on Aug. “They do not have a mandate to put the country through yet another experiment; Britain is not their personal fiefdom to run how they wish.” Out went Johnson for a pileup of scandals and for misleading members of his own party, who declared him unfit to govern. The Conservatives have been in power for 12 years and millions of bad headlines. Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 committee, the Conservative Party’s parliamentary group, announced a sweeping change to the rules, truncating what is usually a two-month process. The opposition Labour Party is up 30 points in opinion polls. “I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the king to notify him that I am resigning.”

"I am also disheartened that Liz Truss' downfall is being widely misreported as being caused by tax cuts. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Truss' resignation was a matter for the UK, but said she looked forward to continuing New Zealand's "very strong relationship" with the UK. A spokesperson for National leader Christopher Luxon said it was not appropriate to comment on the leadership of the UK Conservative Party. However, the spokesperson did acknowledge "events" in the UK had reconfirmed the importance of "fiscal discipline and careful economic management". While hesitant to comment on another country's elections, Seymour did say Johnson oversaw improvements in New Zealanders' access to the UK and a free trade agreement with the UK for New Zealand. Boris Johnson - whose ouster as PM set off the disastrous chain of events leading to Truss' downfall - will chuck his hat in the ring to seize back the top job, the Times reports. Seymour said Truss' resignation should be a concern for the global community. A new PM will be selected from within Conservative ranks by the end of next week. Truss, who quit after just 44 days in office, made a statement outside her 10 Downing St office, acknowledging she "cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party". At Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Ms Truss insisted she was a "fighter, not a quitter" after Labour's leader asked her why she had not resigned. The prime minister said her government delivered on providing support for energy bills and reversing a rise in National Insurance, a tax on workers and companies. In her speech, Ms Truss said she entered "office at a time of great economic and international instability", as war rages in Ukraine and living costs skyrocket. In a brief speech outside Downing Street, Ms Truss said the Conservative Party had elected her on a mandate to cut taxes and boost economic growth. Ms Truss said she would remain in post until a successor formally takes over as party leader and is appointed prime minister by King Charles. Ms Truss said her successor would be elected by next week after a rebellion by Tory MPs forced her to quit.
Keir Starmer has joined calls for Liz Truss to decline the allowance of up to £115,000 a year she will be entitled to as a former prime minister.
Since 2013, prime ministers have been part of the regular ministerial pension scheme, paying in a certain proportion of their salary while the government also contributes. Steven Littlewood, the assistant general secretary of the FDA, which represents senior civil servants, said: “The hypocrisy is astounding. She said: “Millions of public sector workers, including those who transform lives in education, are in the grips of a devastating cost of living crisis. She should do the right thing and give up the money.” The former prime ministers are entitled to claim for necessary office and secretarial costs arising from their special position in public life. Government guidance states that the PDCA was introduced to assist former prime ministers still active in public life.

Utterly appalling," backbencher Charles Walker declared to the BBC. were heard in the House of Commons as Mordaunt battled on. I've had enough of talentless people." and "the lady's not for turning up!" She is part of a Tory party in total thrall to regressive populism." Liz Truss has provided an amazing example of the glass cliff syndrome (most victims don’t take a running jump over the edge). "So you've come back again? UK government bond yields soared as investors soured on the UK's economic prospects. I've never seen such raging incompetence, ever." "I've been an economist for 50 years. That was partly about background as well as other things," she told them.
