Join us for our live coverage as the Black Ferns face Scotland in their final pool match of the Rugby World Cup at the Northland Events Centre in Whangārei.

It’s been 16 years since the two teams met in a Test with the Black Ferns winning all three previous encounters. The Black Ferns execute and veteran Sarah Hirini crosses the line for New Zealand's third try. Lisa Thomson's kick off the restart is on the full and we head to a scrum at halfway. Skeldon is called for a dummy throw at the lineout so New Zealand are back on attack. Tubic kicks it and the Black Ferns go all in pestering Scotland in the ruck with nowhere to go. Wickliffe scores again, this time in the corner off a swift and sharp set from the Black Ferns backs. Scotland try to attack but Mikaele-Tu'u comes in with a crushing tackle. They do well to hold onto it with the Black Ferns defensive line not giving in. Scotland get the attacking lineout and try to gain some momentum. They are a few metres away from the try line, but they lose it. They fight to get the ball back and are looking rejuvenated following their tough first half. Pass has gone forward and they go back to a scrum 5m from halfway.

It was rare for the Black Ferns not to be title favourites. First week there was probably some shock performances and some tight scorelines but I think it's really good we've now got a really competitive 12 teams at the tournament." I think there were 52 kicks in that last game [against France] so it works for them and they're successful with it." "You can either look at that and see that France defence was something pretty special I think we did that. The Black Ferns crushed Wales in pool play to seal their place in the quarterfinals, while England pipped France to book their playoff berth. It was a match which showed Scotland how far they need to improve to take on the best in the world, but realistically, for all that the team will carry out their usual review of what went right and wrong, it was largely irrelevant. They enjoyed some pressure early in the second half, and after a penalty was sent to touch Lisa Thomson got to within five metres of the opposition line before being shut down. The 14 women more than held their own, however, and Holmes got her second try – unconverted this time – after a break by substitute Sylvia Brunt break to within the five-metre line. But those who were on the field had places in the knockout matches to fight for, and showed just how seriously they were taking this game by going on a high-tempo offensive right from kick-off. Ayesha Leti-I’iga got the second after being left in acres of space on her, and then from the restart openside Sarah Hirini broke free in midfield to get her team’s third. And they knew within two minutes of kick-off at the Northland Events Centre that a miracle was not about to materialise.

Top of the line: Black Ferns shine in crushing win (New Zealand Herald)

Coach Wayne Smith has praised the depth in his 32-strong squad at every opportunity during the campaign and that showed against Scotland. Advertisement.

It wasn't just their attack that impressed in the first half, but their discipline – something that has been a big concern throughout the season – and defensive work rate too. After a few messy possessions early on, they found their way and began to showcase their brand, running in seven tries through six different players to be beating the clock come halftime. While fielding something of a mix-and-match squad with several frontline players rested, the Black Ferns were flowing from the outset.
