“I want to fight the best people in the world and I want to do it as often as I can. Just one fight previously, he took former title contender Dan Hooker to the ground and eventually sunk in a kimura choke to finish him early. “My focus is not the same focus as the UFC,” Dariush said in a press conference this week. “You’re praising the guy who got caught and saying that he did it the right way and did it like a man. The man is deadly in so many different ways, whether on the ground or standup and there’s no reason to think he’s even at his peak yet. The other good news is O’Malley is also more of a striker than a grappler. But I think he made a mistake, and he handled it like a man. Sterling, however, did not care about the bookmakers and used his superior wrestling skills to take down to the mat and keep him there for heavy ground-and-pound. It secured the victory, his second in a row. The referee stepped in to end it at the 4:47 mark for a standing TKO. After a standup war earlier in the bout, Krylov decided to take the fight to the ground in the third round for heavy ground-and-pound. Oliveira, the former division champion, was stripped of his title in May after failing to make weight before a bout with Justin Gaethje.

However, he became the first fighter in UFC history to be stripped of a belt for missing weight when he came in a half-pound overweight for his bout with Justin Gaethje. And that is the end of third round After being handed the title via disqualification against Petr Yan at UFC 259 in March 2021, he barely quieted his critics in eking out a split-decision win over Yan in the rematch at UFC 273 in April 2022. Dariush holds the record of fourth most wins in lightweight division - 15, while Gamrot comes in to this match on a four match win streak. Round 1: Dariush puts in a strong leg hold, Gamrot struggles but gets out of the deadlock after a good 20-25 seconds. Ranked number 1 in women’s flyweight, Chookagian is on a four match winning streak coming into the fight. The crowd is behind Yan now as he lands a string of short but sure punches on O’Malley’s face. The Russian pins Oliveira down with a couple of swift movements but Oliveira puts him on the defensive with a counter hold. Round 2: The Etihad erupts as both Yan and O’Malley exchange powerful jabs to their faces. That is followed by a body hold from Yan and O’Malley breaks it after a short struggle. Sterling on the attack straight away as Dillashaw is pinned down and is in visible pain. But Sterling is on top again, lock after lock and Dillashaw is stumbling hard.

Aljamain Sterling tops hobbled TJ Dillashaw via TKO to retain UFC title (ESPN)

Aljamain Sterling beat TJ Dillashaw, who was dealing with a dislocated shoulder, via TKO at 3:44 of the second round to retain his UFC bantamweight title.

"Any of those guys are good," Sterling said. Sterling, 33, defended the belt successfully in a rematch against Yan in a very tight split decision at UFC 273 in April. The California native was coming off a split decision over "I was just in the zone. "I full mounted him, I rolled his arms up," Sterling said. The first round mainly consisted of Sterling taking Dillashaw down, keeping him there and doing some damage from top position and the back. He was in great shape. "I've got to apologize to the weight class. Sterling kept the pressure on, took Dillashaw down and used big punches and elbows from back control to get the TKO. I made sure I kept the pressure on, do what I need to do. "I had no idea," Sterling said of Dillashaw's injury. Sterling retained the UFC bantamweight title with the victory, though there were some other circumstances at play that were out of his hands.

Islam Makhachev Stuns Charles Oliveira via Submission at UFC 280 (Sports Illustrated)

Makhachev got Oliveira to tap with an arm triangle in the second round to become the undisputed lightweight champion.

The only letdown of the card is that Katlyn Chookagian failed to make weight against Manon Fiorot in her flyweight bout. Dillashaw then returned last summer to defeat Cory Sandhagen in a five-round split decision, and he is set to check in for a wake up call -- one that comes to all fighters -- when Sterling remains a step ahead of him at all times today. Dillashaw will attempt to prove he is the same fighter that he was in 2018 when he successfully defended the belt against Cody Garbrandt. With all due respect to Alexander Volkanovski, the winner of this bout will be the pound-for-pound best in the world. Yan (16-4) has plenty of reasons to be frustrated by the decision, but O’Malley (16-1, 1 NC) put forth impressive rounds in the first and third. The exclamation point came in the third, when Dariush landed a massive left, one that could be heard from Abu Dhabi to Vegas. The most impressive shots took place in the second round, with a left hand from O’Malley that stunned Yan, who responded with a ferocious left. That leaves Oliveira in a tough position, likely needing a victory–potentially against Beneil Dariush–to re-enter the title conversation. Dillashaw (17-5) entered the fight in a compromised position, as his left shoulder kept popping out of its socket. While striking initially appeared to be an advantage for Oliveira, that was never the case in this bout. Nurmagomedov, of course, had a cage-side view for the fight as a part of Makhachev’s corner, and he was extremely animated during the victory celebration. Islam Makhachev forced the greatest finisher in UFC history to tap.

It's a Fight-of-the-Night candidate on paper, and the obvious next move for both, depending how Dillashaw's health is coming off what appeared to be yet another shoulder injury. The difference between two massive wins and two stinging losses comes down to fine details. O'Malley is instantly the biggest fight for him, and the rankings justify it. Whether you agree with the scoring of O'Malley's split decision over Yan or not, there's no doubting he proved himself to be elite. Dariush is so, so, so deserving of a title fight, but even he seems to know it isn't in the cards -- yet. And Volkanovski gets a shot at a second title -- in his home country of Australia.

[Belal Muhammad](https://www.espn.com/mma/fighter/_/id/3172112/belal-muhammad)'s UFC career started, few people outside him and his team could envision he would be what he is now: one of the best welterweight fighters in the world. This is a wild sport, and Sterling is just riding the wave while simultaneously being an elite fighter. But his process of getting the belt and retaining it has been unorthodox, to say the least. Dillashaw could not defend himself properly, and Sterling did what he had to do: finish the fight dominantly with ground-and-pound. He's honest with himself, and he's fine with the rest of his team being honest with him. He's doing the work and he's doing it smartly.

UFC 280 bonuses: The Sean O'Malley-Petr Yan banger was a ... (MMA Junkie)

The UFC handed out four post-fight bonuses after Saturday's card, including one to its new lightweight champion.

Petr Yan via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2022/10/ufc-280-results-sean-omalley-vs-petr-yan-controversial-decision) [Sean O'Malley](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/sean-omalley) (16-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) had to dig deep, but took a split decision from former bantamweight champion [Petr Yan](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/petr-yan) (16-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) for the biggest win of his career. Oliveira was stripped of the title in May when he missed weight for a title fight against Justin Gaethje. But late in the second, Muhammad landed a punch that wobbled Brady, and he took advantage. Oliveira is the UFC’s record holder for career submissions, so Makhachev’s finish was poetic justice. He was a slight underdog against the unbeaten Brady, and the two went back and forth for most of nearly two rounds. Muhammad kept the pressure on and landed punch after punch while Brady backed up.

Road To UFC Results & Scorecards | Semi-Finals (The Official Website of the Ultimate Fighting Championship)

Road To UFC returns for the semifinals in Abu Dhabi live from Etihad Arena on October 23, 2022, following UFC 280: Oliveira vs Makhachev.

Sasu landed a series of short elbows in the opening round that caused a cut and swelling over the right eye of Balajin. He was earlier into the takedowns in the second, again momentarily getting around to the back. What started as a neck crank turned into a rear-naked choke as the arm slipped under the chin, leaving Siqueira forced to tap right before the horn. With the victory, the Indian fighter advances to 6-0 overall and will face Jeka Saragih in the lightweight finals. Jubli, who advanced to the semis after his opponent missed weight in June, started strong, flashing good hands and timing over the opening five minutes, seemingly stinging Kim a time or two in the first round. The top mixed martial arts prospects from Asia will be vying for a UFC contract.

UFC 280 results, takeaways: Islam Makhachev makes a statement in ... (CBSSports.com)

The action in Abu Dhabi did not disappoint with a pair of title fights and an incredible bout at bantamweight.

The fight was as dramatic as it was fun to watch as O'Malley weathered the storm of Yan's six takedowns and constant physical pressure to bloody and drop his opponent with a flying knee in Round 3. [O'Malley received the benefit of the doubt](https://www.cbssports.com/mma/news/ufc-280-results-highlights-sean-omalley-takes-split-decision-over-petr-yan-to-earn-likely-title-shot/) from the judges in a split decision win over former champion Petr Yan. O'Malley was lucky to receive the nod and twice during his postfight interview admitted that he wasn't sure he even won and would need to rewatch the tape before commenting on whether he's ready for a title shot. But pushing forward with a fight he was physically unfit to win, even with the courage he showed, makes it that much harder to reward him with a big payday for acting "heroically." [entered the Octagon following Makhachev's victory](https://www.cbssports.com/mma/news/ufc-280-alexander-volkanovski-accepts-islam-makhachevs-challenge-for-lightweight-title-fight-in-australia/) for a staredown meant to hype a potential fight between the two in Australia next year for the 155-pound title. And while it's clear from his apology that he wasn't interested in holding up the sport's deepest division any longer, nobody wins in a scenario such as this. Dillashaw deserved enormous credit for surviving the opening round while Sterling, a ground specialist with suffocatingly long limbs, had his way with him on top and repeatedly took his back. The former two-time bantamweight champion, who was hoping to make history at 36 by challenging Aljamain Sterling, was mysteriously absent during UFC Embedded filming and didn't take part in the public workout. Makhachev cut Oliveira early with a left cross and was never in trouble against a fighter who owns the UFC record for submission and stoppage wins. An early injury to TJ Dillashaw also brought an abrupt end to Aljamain Sterling's second defense of his bantamweight title in the co-main event. Given the ease at which he finished Oliveira, it also isn't out of the question that the larger Makhachev would enter as the betting favorite. Not only did Makhachev step up his striking in a big way against Oliveira, his ability to dominate on the ground and create an opening for an immediate finish was nothing short of Khabib-like.

UFC 280 fight fallout: Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski ... (CBSSports.com)

Makhachev vs. Volkanovski, Aljamain Sterling vs. O'Malley are among the best fights to make after UFC 280.

If Dillashaw will be out for a while, it is best to wait and see how the bantamweight division settles in the coming months. The most important thing for Dillashaw is to get consistent reps in the Octagon. Volkanovski appears to be the next direction for the lightweight title. What is undeniable is that O'Malley proved he belonged despite what many predicted to be too much, too soon for the "Suga" Show. Unfortunately, in the shadow of Makhachev vs. Beneil Dariush: There may be no more exciting fight in the totality of what mixed martial arts is than Oliveira vs. As a consequence, he should not fall too far down the ladder. Makhachev and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski have already set the groundwork for a lightweight super-fight in Australia. The They are willing to stake the UFC lightweight title to make it happen. Makhachev and his coach, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, want to usurp Volkanovski as the UFC's No. In a rare move: the defending champion called out a challenger.

5 biggest takeaways from UFC 280: Islam Makhachev is amazing ... (MMA Junkie)

Islam Makhachev looks somewhat unbeatable at lightweight after winning gold at UFC 280, and it might take a featherweight to end his run.

If Makhachev can be the man to do it, he would truly have a legacy that is unique in a sport where it’s becoming harder and harder to stand out. However, I wouldn’t be taken off guard either if he made another huge statement against Volkanovski and opened more eyes to the true depth of his talents. There will be plenty of time to analyze the Makhachev vs. It seems like Makhachev is poised to make a serious run as champion in this division, but can he separate himself from the pack of the 11 undisputed titleholders who came before him? 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport right now, but he’ll go into Volkanovski’s (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC) back yard of Australia to do it. In order to do that, he would need to exceed the record of three consecutive title defenses, which is shared by Nurmagomedov, Benson Henderson, Frankie Edgar and B.J. He has the belt, and sits atop arguably the most stacked weight class in the entire spot. His eight-fight winning streak – which is the longest in the history of the weight class – is proof to that manner. He didn’t get outclassed in this fight by any stretch of imagination, and that’s truly the biggest takeaway from this fight. He’s now undefeated in his past nine contests, and he’s firmly entrenched as one of the very best in the division. And there’s no doubt this experience is going to make him a better fighter going forward. Dillashaw came into their bantamweight championship fight with a pre-existing injury that seemingly took him out of the contest from the very first exchange.

In a non-tournament bout, 23-year-old Samandar Murodov of Tajikistan remained undefeated as he notched a buzzer beating rear naked choke win at 4:59 of the first round. He will move on to an all-Japan showdown with Toshiomi Kazama in the finals. Among the top standouts is Hyun Sung Park, who survived an early knockdown against Thai showman Topnoi Kirwam, and ended up getting a rear naked choke victory. Could he be the first ever Indonesian UFC fighter? Prior to this tourney, “The Korean Tiger” also had a 10-second KO win at Road FC, meaning that he only needed an insane 88 seconds to dispatch of his last three opponents. The biggest winner from the event was Jeong Yeong Lee, who again picked up another win in under a minute.

Islam Makhachev defeats Charles Oliveira by submission at UFC 280 (ESPN)

He dropped Oliveira with a short counter right hand and then immediately followed him to the floor -- something very few of Oliveira's previous opponents were willing to do, because of his submission threat. He has a similar style to his legendary teammate and mentor, Nurmagomedov. He converted two of three takedown attempts and accumulated more than five minutes of control time in a fight that lasted only 8:16. Volkanovski (25-1) is coming off his fourth title defense in July and has announced his intent to move up in weight. Nurmagomedov's late father, Abdulmanap, who passed away in 2020 due to complications of COVID-19, always envisioned that Nurmagomedov would retire as champion and Makhachev would pick up where he left off. "I just want to say, this is my belt for coach Abdulmanap," Makhachev said.
