'House of the Dragon' episode 10: Dance, dragons, dance (NPR)

In the season finale of HBO's 'Game of Thrones' spinoff, Rhaenyra assesses her position and the skies over Westeros become less than friendly.

Borros demands that the kids not fight under his roof, and we're reminded of how much lip-service the lords of the Seven Kingdoms pay to the safety of their guests. Jace is to head North, to deal with the Arryns and Starks. But Corlys officially declares for Rhaenyra, and informs her that the Triarchy has been routed (he's said that before) and he now controls the Stepstones — and the Narrow Sea. Aemond demands that Luke cut out one of his eyes, in payment for the one he took from Aemond all those years ago. Daemon heads down to the caverns underneath Dragonstone, and comes across a huge, old and not particularly easygoing dragon. More Houses from the Crownlands have declared for them — Lords Celtigar (of Claw Isle) and Staunton (of Rook's Rest), in addition to the three Houses that Daemon sent ravens to earlier. The meeting is frosty, with Rhaenyra calling Otto a traitor and Otto insisting that since Aegon has all the fancy stuff that kings have (crown! He orders that their nearby allies in the Crownlands (read: the region of Westeros around King's Landing) be alerted: Lord Darklyn (of Duskendale), Lord Massey (of Stonedance) and Lord Bar Emmon (of Sharp Point). A snarling Daemon assaults Rhaenyra, and dismisses the whole thing as more of his late brother's obsession with omens. He and the pregnant Rhaenyra share a nice scene together in which she reassures him that she wasn't ready when Viserys named her his heir. I mentioned last week that the characters on this show are drawn with a lot more nuance and ambivalence than their comparatively sketchy and ruthless counterparts in Fire & Blood, the book from which House of the Dragon is adapted. The ruinous civil war called the Dance of the Dragons is here at last, and if this episode is any indication, it's gonna be one bloody mosh pit.

'House of the Dragon' Episode 10 Recap: No Turning Back (esquire.com)

Daemon (who has spent the episode crying on a beach and singing to a dragon) relays the news to Rhaenyra, who retreats before turning around to stare down the camera, now ready for the war and inevitably, a second season. They pledge allegiance to Rhaenyra, and their bond is heartwarming if mildly bewildering (Daemon has murdered Corlys’ brother and appears responsible for the death of his only son). Their relationship, dotted with martial frustrations and support, is one of the more compelling pairings in House of the Dragon. The funeral scene, inventively scored, doubles as a coronation for Rhaenyra as a few defectors come to swear their loyalty to the queen. Rhaenys (Eve Best), fresh from the mass murder of civilians at Aegon’s coronation, brings news of Viserys’ death and the Hightowers’ treachery to Daemon (who treats the princess with suspicion: why didn’t she just kill the upstarts when she had the chance?) and the pregnant Rhaenyra, who immediately starts bleeding. The series is attracting comparable numbers to Game of Thrones, but the prequel has established itself as a completely different kind of show, especially in the second half of its first season.

House of the Dragon – Season 1 Episode 10 Recap, Review ... (The Review Geek)

Episode 10 of House of the Dragon starts this finale with Rhaenyra finding Luke staring at a map of Westeros. He doesn't want the Sea Snake to die, ...

Much like Game of Thrones season 1, this is all about setting the scene and preparing for what’s to come, and it’s actually refreshing to find a series like this that doesn’t just attempt to cram in action sequences for the sake of keeping its audience invested (looking at you, Rings of Power.) A day of reckoning is coming for Westeros and you can feel that’s going to bubble up in season 2 nicely. In order to enact all of this, Rhaenyra needs to find out who her allies are, and that includes sending messages along to Winterfell, the Eyrie and Storm’s End. Now, Aemond only intends to taunt the boy but he loses control of his dragon, thanks to a burst of dragonfire from Arrax. He’s stopped by Daemon and just like earlier in the season, this stand-off on the battlements is broken up by the arrival of a dragon. Corlys points out that Rhaenyra has the full support of his house and his fleet. Corlys reveals that he has full control of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea. And unfortunately, Aemond happens to be inside the royal chamber. Rhaenyra is not actually going to war just yet, and decides to play the waiting game. In the wake of this, Ser Erryk arrives and swears his fealty to Rhaenyra, who has her own crown and people by her side. Daemon sees snippets of the aftermath and heads down to he beach to grieve before burning the babe under dragon fire. He doesn’t want the Sea Snake to die, and doesn’t think Driftmark should pass to him either.

Arrax attacks Vhagar with fire, and Vhagar bites the smaller dragon in two, along with Luke Velaryon. Luke (Elliot Grihault), and his dragon Arrax did indeed both die in the House of the Dragon season finale. The death of Lucerys in House of the Dragon episode 10 is mostly taken directly from George R.R.

House Of The Dragon unloads a tragic, heavy-handed season finale (The A.V. Club)

In the plot-packed episode "The Black Queen," the action moves to Dragonstone.

- Speaking of stretching credulity, Luke is meant to be 14 in this episode—the same age as Rhaenyra was when Viserys named her heir. - It stretches credulity that Rhaenyra would send her young sons off to treat with uncertain allies in the middle of a cold war without so much as a single knight to escort them. [Game Of Thrones](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/game-of-thrones-newbies), when she looks out over King’s Landing and makes the choice to burn it to the ground. She accuses him of abandoning her in favor of adventure at sea and tells him of Vaemond’s death at the hands of Daemon. In the season’s final scene, Daemon delivers the news of their son’s death to his wife. And as in “The Rogue Prince,” Rhaenyra flies in on Syrax as a show of power—only this time, she’s on Daemon’s side instead of Otto’s. Rhaenyra and her second son share quiet moments throughout the episode, in which he talks about how reluctant he is to rule Driftmark and generally looks like a sweet, fragile baby bird. It sounds like a good idea at first; but the moment Rhaenyra hands letters to her sons and tells them they should be messengers and not warriors, it’s painfully obvious that things are about to go south. Daemon’s ready to start the war right then and there, but Rhaenyra tells him to stand down; she’ll take a day to think it over. And he brought a gift: Viserys’ crown, overlooked in favor of the crown of Aegon on the Conquerer the presumptive king now wears. Daemon takes it from the knight’s hands and, as he did for his brother only a few days before, places the crown on Rhaenyra’s head and bends the knee. Rhaenyra Targaryen may be wearing her late father’s crown and she may be nominally the rightful heir; but “stale oaths,” as Otto Hightower says, are nowhere near as potent as a coronation performed before an audience of thousands.

(Who wants to be the lady of Dragonstone when they can be Lady of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, Alicent? As a matter of fact, he is downright offended that the so-called queen didn’t even approach him with a marriage proposal for one of his daughters. The main backers Rhaenyra wants behind her claim are the Arryns, the Tullys, and the Baratheons, all three houses to which she is connected by blood. It’s a smart move, considering that she still believes the new queen might have murdered her son and that Daemon seems to have a pretty strong hold of the men serving at Dragonstone. Jacaerys (Harry Collett) is tasked with taking his dragon, Vermax, to the Vale and the Riverlands, while Lucerys is sent with Arrax to Storm’s End. Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys aren’t the only surprise backers of Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne. [“The Green Council,”](https://collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-season-1-episode-9-recap-the-green-council/) House of the Dragon’s tenth episode has a slower pace and focuses a lot more on what its characters have to say instead of what they do. At the traditional seat of House Targaryen, Rhaenyra remains oblivious to her father’s death and still believes she will ascend to the throne once he passes. In a matter of seconds, there she is, sitting at the table, commanding her men to find out who their allies are before making any sudden moves and to hold still until the other side attacks. The boy’s tragic demise is sure to heat up the cold war that Targaryens and Hightowers have been waging long before King Viserys’ ( [Paddy Considine](https://collider.com/tag/paddy-considine/)) death. The apparent minimalism of the episodes’ family chats and war room politics hide a lot of complexity. The end of a season doesn’t always mean the end of all conflict.

House of the Dragon season one episode 10 roundup: the finale is ... (Evening Standard)

It's the episode we've been building up to for months: the start of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war. Last episode, Ser Otto was calling for ...

Jacaerys is to fly north, stop first at the Eyrie and then to Winterfell, meanwhile Lucerys will fly south to Storm’s End. Nevertheless, House of the Dragon has kept us thrilled from one week to the next. The vision of a woman in charge at last seems to appeal. She is, of course, speaking about A Song of Ice and Fire, the dream her father told her about in episode one. They are about to send ravens to the other Houses, but then Jacaerys says that dragons would be faster. You have the full support of our fleet and house, your grace,” he says, bowing. She is bent over, there’s a lot of blood, and she leans further to pull out her baby, who slops onto the floor, stillborn. They need allies, so Game of Thrones fans will be happy to hear that the Blacks now have to look at Westeros to try and make allegiances. Does he have the potential to be a good Dad, too, now? But Daemon ignores him and orders ravens to be sent to the different Houses. Rhaenyra and Daemon are in The Chamber of the Painted Table (the war room) when they receive news of Rhaenys’ arrival. The Tullys may need some more kneading, it seems, and Daemon says he’s going to fly over to smooth matters over.

House of the Dragon episode 10 review: "Serves up heartbreak after ... (GamesRadar+)

The House of the Dragon season finale is another rock-solid episode, with dragons, disaster, and excellent performances from the cast.

[House of the Dragon season 2](https://www.gamesradar.com/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-release-date-trailer-cast/) will undoubtedly be bloodier than the first. [Game of Thrones](https://www.gamesradar.com/game-of-thrones-season-8-review/): a dragon is not a slave. - We seem to have reached the end of the time-skips, which will hopefully make future seasons stronger and more streamlined. There have been countless opportunities for bloodshed to be avoided in House of the Dragon, so this accidental death is a brilliant thematic culmination for the entire season. Luke breaks through the clouds into the clear, bright sky above, one last moment of peace before a horrifying end: Vhagar breaks from the clouds, mouth wide open, and shreds Arrax and Luke to pieces. As it turns out, Viserys never told Daemon of the prophecy, a clear sign that the king never considered his brother fit to rule. That should be the end of it, but when Luke turns to leave, he's stopped by Aemond. Jacaerys, Rhaenyra's oldest son, suggests he and his brother Lucerys fly to the Starks and the Baratheons themselves. When Rhaenyra broaches the prophecy of the The ambivalent Rhaenys – who did not kneel for Rhaenyra when she was crowned – ultimately pledging her allegiance to the blacks is genuinely moving, especially considering how surprised Rhaenyra is by the decision. The moment is understated compared to Aegon's ostentatious coronation, but this gives it a quiet, chills-inducing power – those gathered are won over by the strength of Rhaenyra's claim, rather than the pomp of a grand ceremony. First, she learns of her father's death, then Rhaenys informs her that Aegon has been crowned king, and all this horrible news triggers the early birth of her child.

Graphic scene sickens viewers in TV finale (NEWS.com.au)

SPOILER ALERT: We are about to recap the House of the Dragon finale in copious detail. If you haven't finished the season, stop reading now!

At first we only see her back, but then she turns, and we see the mix of grief and fury upon her face. The message is merely a reminder of the Baratheons’ oath to Rhaenyra, which she assumed would be sufficient. And with that, we reach the main drama of the finale. Remember the sinking feeling you had in the pit of your gut when you were taking a terrible school report card home to your parents? She says she has no desire to rule a kingdom of “ash and bone”, and suggests her duty to preserve “peace and unity” is more important than placing herself on the throne. By Daemon’s reckoning, he and Rhaenyra have 13, though the majority of those do not currently have riders. The newly crowned Queen holds a war council to take stock of the situation. It is calm and peaceful, with only the sound of waves crashing in the background. There’s a lot of emotional complexity in terms of this war that’s starting without her, and that’s literally tearing her apart,” said the episode’s director, Greg Yaitanes. As Rhaenyra and Daemon are burning the body of their stillborn daughter, Ser Erryk Cargyll arrives, having fled King’s Landing in the previous episode. Later in this episode the table is lit from below by candles, giving it the appearance of being on fire. Passing up a chance to roast the Greens alive, and end the coup in one stroke, she fled to Dragonstone to warn Rhaenyra.

House of the Dragon creator explains show's biggest death in ... (Dexerto)

House of the Dragon's creator has opened up about the major brutal death in the Episode 10 finale, the show's biggest loss to date.

It’s yet to be seen where she goes next, but certainly this is another major point of no return in the punch/counter punch of Alicent’s side and Rhaenyra’s side.” So the fact that is the first shot, to me, made it an almost necessary end point for the first season. [House of the Dragon](https://www.dexerto.com/tag/house-of-the-dragon/) hasn’t indulged in much Red Wedding-esque bloodshed, with the exception of [Joffrey Lonmouth](https://www.dexerto.com/tv-movies/house-of-the-dragon-joffrey-lonmouth-and-laenor-explained-1931388/) – although in fairness, if you taunt a member of the King’s Guard, what do you expect? “I think he was showing his rival that he will not be intimidated and trifled with is probably more in play there than trying to become a kinslayer… But Aemond was also a kid who was bullied and was made a mockery for part of his life for not having a dragon. [Game of Thrones](https://www.dexerto.com/tag/game-of-thrones/), death should never be a huge surprise.

'House of the Dragon' Episode 10: '...And the Dragons Danced' (Bell of Lost Souls)

Episode 9 of House of the Dragon dealt with the aftermath of Viserys' death in King's Landing. We saw the Greens take action to seize the throne and crown Aegon ...

I appreciated the symmetry between Ott0’s face-off with Daemon in Episode two and in House of the Dragon Episode 10. At Storm’s End, it’s clear the Maester twisted the wording of the Queen’s letter to cause the Berathons to turn on her. It really builds on the idea that they are weapons of mass destruction and the results of using them in unreliable. House of the Dragon Episode 10 ends with Rhanerya finding out about the death of her son, and clearly now ready to go to war. It’s decided in House of the Dragon Episode 10 that the Queens eldest son Jace will fly to the Vale and then the North to gain their allegiance. Meanwhile, the younger Luke will fly to Storm’s End to gain the support of House Baratheon. Aemond takes the chance to get back at Luke for the loss of his eye, trying to get him to fight. Episode 9 of House of the Dragon dealt with the aftermath of Viserys’ death in King’s Landing. A ruler’s duty is to her people and she realizes that making peace could be the best way to protect the realm. She tells Daemon and Rhanerya about Viserys’ death and the usurpation. It’s quickly shown that while the Blacks had a lot of dragons they don’t have a ton of men, and many of their supporters are uncertain. Episode 10 takes us across Blackwater Bay to Dragonstone and shows how Rhanerya deals with the news.
