UEFA said: “Ahead of the UEFA Champions League match between SL Benfica and Juventus, the home club – without the knowledge of UEFA and UEFA”s goal-line technology supplier – commissioned works in the Estadio do SL Benfica, which made the installed goal-line technology system dysfunctional. “Unfortunately it will not be possible to replace and install a new system in time for the match and therefore the match will go ahead without the use of goal-line technology as per the Uefa Champions League regulations.” The statement was heavily critical of the Portuguese club and said neither they nor the technology provider were informed about the work.
Juventus desperately need a victory against in-form Benfica to keep their hopes of advancing in the Champions League alive.
They are equal on points with fourth-place minnows Maccabi Haifa and could well be in a battle to just to finish third after this matchday. Benfica beat Juventus 2-0 in the reverse fixture in Turin and will fancy their chances of causing another upset this time on their home turf. Who will win the UEFA Champions League this season?
