Point Nepean scratched from the Melbourne Cup (The Age)

The decision means that Lloyd Williams = who owns Point Nepean - now has just one runner in the race with his colours to be worn by Johnny Allen on Serpentine.

Alligator Blood finished fifth behind Anamoe in the Cox Plate. The review led to a change in April 2021 in the minimum targeted track rating for the Melbourne Cup to Good 4 from no firmer than Good 3, to provide more give in the ground in the interests of horse welfare. Alligator Blood had a similar scare before the Cox Plate when Racing Victoria vets said he was lame in the near fore two days before the race.

“I just don’t know how it’s going to play out for Deauville Legend. It’s such a hard race to win for a young horse like that. “I like that horse a bit better than (favourite) Deauville Legend. They’ve got so many things going their way for the race and at a bit of odds as well.” “I’m really keen on Realm Of Flowers. “I think she’s snuck in with a nice light weight, is in a good barrier (5) and she’s a pretty good mare.

“It was a very easy piece of work. Point Nepean’s scratching is certain to revive the debate about whether there should be emergencies for the race. “Obviously we’re full of hope but it’s a horse race at the end of the day and everything has to go right.Ferguson gave Deauville Legend a gallop at Werribee on Sunday morning, which he said would leave the top stayer ready for the Melbourne Cup after a quiet day on Monday. It was what we call a nice breeze to open the lungs before he has a quiet day on Monday going into the race.” Deauville Legend is the only runner under $10 in Melbourne Cup betting but his trainer James Ferguson said the Flemington contest would not be a procession for the favourite. “I do feel that with the weight he has been given, that he’s got a very good chance because he’s coming here with a lot of form,” Ferguson said. Deauville Legend will carry 55kg but Ferguson said that weight gave the gelding a chance to win the Melbourne Cup at only his eighth start. Ferguson has been part of a previous Melbourne Cup success as Charlie Appleby’s travelling foreman with the 2018 winner Cross Counter. Melbourne Cup miracle mare who came back from the brink (Racenet)

They were worried Melbourne Cup mare Realm Of Flowers could have died but she has beaten 100-1 odds just to race in Tuesday's Cup.

"She beat Durston and in the last 50 metres was drawing away from Durston who then came out and won Caulfield Cup and was quite well fancied before he got taken out of the Melbourne Cup." "She can't be held up in a race – she just needs to be rolling around the field and start her race 800m from home, just keep plugging away and finding. "Fast forward to recently and her run in the Metrop was an absolute corker. "Realm Of Flowers finished very well to run second to the stablemate, the Freedman team expected the stablemate to beat her a lot easier," Bester said. "This filly was out of Astral Flowers so the name came from there, she was named in honour of my daughter." "She was hospitalised for a long time and then in a paddock for a long time and then had gentle rehabilitation for a long time. "The odds of her getting back to the Melbourne Cup this year were 100-1, that was just to get her back to racing and aiming at the Melbourne Cup. "I negotiated to buy her at under her reserve price, the reserve was $200,000 and we paid $180,000 and put together some friends in a (ownership) syndicate. She left Durston in her wake that day, with Durston then coming out and winning the Caulfield Cup and being one of the top fancies for the Melbourne Cup until vet protocols ruled him out. "She has already beaten the odds to get to the first Tuesday in November." Her most recent performance – finishing third in the Group 1 Metropolitan and being ahead just after the line – was an eye-catcher from a Melbourne Cup point of view. "She developed an infection in her knee, which got quite bad, and it got to the point we assumed it was career ending and we wondered if it might end up life threatening," Realm Of Flowers part-owner and the man who named her and purchased her as a yearling, James Bester, said.

The first two of the big three races on the Spring Racing Calendar — the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate — have been run and won.

Then-second favourite, Loft, was withdrawn on Friday after scans found an issue with the German horse trained by Marcel Weiss. If you're in Queensland, the race will start at 2pm AEST, or in South Australia, at 2:30pm ACDT. A crowd of 80,000 is expected on Tuesday. These include the famous main "Loving Cup" for the winning owner, and trophies for the winning jockey, the winning trainer, the strapper who prepares the winning horse and to the breeder. Two of the top three horses in the market for this year's Melbourne Cup are a bit of a mystery, as they have not raced in Australia prior to the race. The race will also be streamed on 10Play and — for those who have a subscription — on Kayo.

And it’s not just the glory of being dubbed a fashionista: last year’s best dressed man and woman each won prize packages of more than $90,000. The general rule of thumb is dress up, not down. Daily Telegraph racing journalist Rob Sutherland has listed his top tips for the race, declaring Deauville Legend (8) deserving of its favourites tag. Has shown a glimpse of form this spring but would still need a big improvement to win this. Another well-bred Irish import who won the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes (Listed) over 2800m, one of three staying wins in the Emerald Isle before exported to Australia. Another Kiwi-bred and one of a strong hand in the race for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, who has emerged as the most improved stayer in Australia, scooting away to win the $1,000,000 Turnbull Stks earlier in the Carnival. This classy English raider from the Newmarket yard of George Boughey is vying to become the 24th 3YO (NHT) to win the Melbourne Cup. Plus - The Alternative Commentary Collective will be running a “Punt-a-long” live event with the Boys Get Paid team from 3pm–6pm. Realm Of Flowers - Performed well over this distance in the past, finishing fifth in the G1 Sydney Cup this year and narrowly missing in a Listed race earlier in her career. Has been in poor form this preparation, finishing 13th in the G1 Caulfield Cup and last in a Listed race prior to that. Still in the infancy of its career in Australia and shouldn't be discounted in this race. Interpretation - Hasn't gone terribly this preparation, finishing third in the G3 Bart Cummings and sixth in the G3 Geelong Cup. Arapaho - Has been racing well, finishing second in the Randwick St Leger Stakes in his last start and taking out the G3 Premier's Cup back in August. Will be fighting it out at the very end and will look to become the first favourite to win in almost a decade. Daqiansweet Junior - One of the only horses in the race to win over the 3200m trip, taking out the G2 Adelaide Cup earlier this year. Looks to be back near his best during this spring carnival, producing a couple of solid runs in the G1 Caulfield Cup and G3 Bart Cummings, so he must be respected. Numerian - A solid run in the G1 Caulfield Cup, finishing fifth and just 1.2 lengths off the winner. The gelding took out the G1 Sydney Cup earlier this year over the same distance and has been racing consistently well during this preparation, finishing third in the G1 Caulfield Cup and winning the G2 Chelmsford Stakes. A blip on the radar in the G1 Cox Plate over a shorter distance shouldn't impact his chances in this race. Has been in sound form leading up to the race, finishing a close second in the G1 Caulfield Cup and third in the G3 Naturalist Stakes.

More than 1000 days have passed, many in lockdown, since that 2019 win that made Vow And Declare part of racing history. He can literally take little kids into his box and he will be happy to see them,” O’Brien said. When he was slow to recover he had surgery and the operation found a bony sequestrum, which set him back again before he hurt his tendon at his second run in that spring campaign. If not, he was great to have around in the cold mornings when the wind whips into the property off Bass Strait. After about six months at Oakland Lodge with Evison he was ready to return to O’Brien’s property in Barwon Heads. After a couple of jump outs and a promising start over 1600m at Caulfield, O’Brien settled Vow And Declare for a month before he returned to Flemington this September for his first run at headquarters since the 2020 Melbourne Cup.

Where do racing colours come from? How are they chosen, and what keep them from clashing?

“The brighter and the simpler the better. “The range of colours is getting greater because they’re all gone,” Cameron said. Colours were made of silk until the early 1960s, when traders switched to nylon with patterns stuck on manually. Owners and trainers have registered 2350 colours currently through the racing authority, with registrations lasting for up to five years. Designing a unique colour combination has become harder as registrations proliferate, says Roger Cameron, the managing director of Melbourne manufacturer Mitty’s. The colours, not just to please crowds, help race callers and punters distinguish one horse thundering past from another.

Melbourne Cup cheat sheet: The horse to be 'found out' in two-time ... (Fox Sports)

Melbourne Cup cheat sheet: The horse to be 'found out' in two-time winner's ultimate form guide.

Had a last-start 13th in the Caulfield Cup, and I just don’t think she’s travelling well enough to figure in this. The wet track won’t hurt her at all, and a light weight in the wet is always a good thing. Yes he won the 3200m Adelaide Cup and was third int he Sydney Cup over the same trip last autumn, but those races - whilst they’re the same distance - they’re way below the Melbourne Cup in terms of what a horse needs. I just think it’s great timing before the Melbourne Cup - 13 days - and I think you can say it’s the perfect horse’s perfect Melbourne Cup prep. For a while it felt like that dream you have when you’re out in public and you discover you’re in the nude. He was a little disappointing when seventh in the Caulfield Cup, but, as great a rider as Jamie is, she’d be the first to admit she’d have been disappointed with her ride that day, getting squeezed up in the ruck around the turn and having to switch to the inside, which wasn’t a great place to be. The barrier’s OK, and Craig Williams is a great jockey, but the main thing is, he won in a four-horse field a couple of starts back, his main form reference for this. She’s a quality mare and her run in the Caulfield Cup was fair, but I just think she’s in a bit of a funny situation. He was warming up at the end of the Caulfield Cup, and I thought his was the most eye-catching run in that race. He beat me by a millimetre in 2008 when he was on Viewed and I was on Bauer. He’s seven, so this is probably his last chance because he’s not going to be better at eight, but he’s a good, on-speed horses, and he has one of the best front-running riders in Australia on board in Tim Clark. Some horses can go along and become really good horses at their end of their career - they might get a win and the boosts their desire to win, or their confidence.

Melbourne Cup form guide: The verdict on every horse and $23 roughie no one is talking about.

Was looming as a top Melbourne Cup chance last year, after her Sydney Cup fifth, and tuned up with a good sixth in the 2500m Bart Cummings, but then went amiss and didn’t make the Cup. This mare made some waves last spring with a second in The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington before winning the Geelong Cup, which had her as a $21 chance in the Melbourne Cup, where she came a middling ninth. Sneaked in with a light weight as one of the last in. Also, Geelong Cup has been a good trial for this in the past, with Media Puzzle winning both in 2002, and Prince Of Arran winning it in 2019 before his second in the big one. Tough stayer in a strong stable who was in peak form last spring, leading to a very meritorious sixth in this race last November. Lightly-raced for a 6yo and has some impressive staying bloodlines - being by the great Galileo - and performances, having won what many call the greatest race in the world, the English Derby. Highly-rated British raider who put the writing on the wall for this with a tough, 2.8 len win in the prestigious Voltigeur at his last start. Has looked to be building up for this race all through this preparation, including a third and a fourth in her two runs before the Caulfield Cup, suggesting she’s been building up nicely for this race. He’s by a great sire of stayers in Teofilo, who’s sons Cross Counter and Twilight Payment won this in 2018 and 2020 respectively, the latter doing the near-impossible by leading all the way. Ran a great second in the Caulfield Cup (2400m), the renowned lead-up to this, when he work hard and was just nabbed on the line. His form has been strong this time in as well, especially leading throughout from gate 17 and only weakening late when a length third in the Caulfield Cup. Tough former British stayer who’s taken a while to hit his straps here but has had a big year, capped by winning over this distance (crucial) in the Sydney Cup last autumn.

MELBOURNE CUP 2022: How bookie Betr became the big story of ... (The Australian Financial Review)

Start-up bookie Betr has become the hot topic of the racing industry thanks to a risky marketing play designed to help it break into a lucrative sector.

Most punters have multiple betting accounts and shift their funds around to take advantage of the bet deals, so their stickiness and loyalty is questionable. [Sign up to our weekly Opinion newsletter.](https://login.myfairfax.com.au/signup_newsletter/10146?channel_key=9ME3ACTT4ZYY1fEMfvR2EA&callback_uri=https://www.afr.com) [James Thomson](/by/james-thomson-1446yx)is a Chanticleer columnist based in Melbourne. Rivals believe Betr’s promotion has become much bigger than it ever intended, and the firm may be paying for its big splash for some time, as its efforts to reduce its exposure suggest. Maybe even big enough to justify the gamble the pair have taken. By backing Deauville Legend to win with other bookies, Betr is hoping to offset some of the amount it could lose to punters. In the grand tradition of the Melbourne Cup, this is essentially a good old-fashioned gamble. It may take years to know whether Betr’s big promotional bet has paid off. On Monday night, Betr tried another tack to reduce its exposure, offering the lucky punters who managed to back Deauville Legend at $101 – who stand to collect $1010 if they placed the maximum $10 bet – a classic bird-in-the-hand-is-worth-two-in-the-bush offer. And it’s a tale not of horseflesh and grit, but of marketing, behavioural psychology, digital disruption and risk management. Their experience of customer behaviour says punters have become skilled at arbitraging bookie promotions. It’s not clear how this behavioural experiment has worked. Or Bart Cummings’ 12 famous victories as a trainer, and Lloyd Williams’ seven wins as an owner.
