Packed weekend of events, concerts, set to cause traffic chaos in ... (Stuff.co.nz)

With Flugtag and big gigs being staged in Auckland on Saturday, plan ahead to avoid traffic jams and parking restrictions.

For Christmas in the Park, buses and trains are a good option – with Grafton and Newmarket stations nearby. Classic Christmas songs will be belted out, as well as fireworks to end the night. It would be well worth packing a raincoat and an umbrella (if the venue allows it) as the weather is expected to take a turn for the worse on Saturday, according to MetService. If the weather gets particularly sour, Christmas in the Park does have a postponement plan that would see it run on Sunday – but if that too is not possible, it will be cancelled. Showers are expected to become more frequent during the afternoon, with possible heavy spells and a chance of hail and thunder, they said. There will be parking restrictions in place at the Domain and around the park’s perimeter. The competition sees teams build flying machines with the goal of launching the furthest off the platform, and is back in Auckland for the first time in 20 years. The weather won’t be helping, with heavy showers and a chance of hail expected in the afternoon, according to MetService. The thunderstorm watch for parts of Northland, Waikato, central North Island, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa is through to 10pm, with a heavy rain watch to 3pm tomorrow. Police were alerted to flooding in Epsom, Ponsonby and Mt Eden, and there was water on both sides of the road in Brentwood Ave in Mt Eden, a police spokeswoman said at 6pm. The timing couldn’t have been worse for Auckland, with 300,000 people expected to be moving around the city as Guns N’ Roses performed at Eden Park, pro-surfer turned hitmaker Jack Johnson played at Western Springs and a slew of entertainers gathered at Christmas in the Park in Auckland’s Domain. And at Guns N’ Roses a few kilometres away, the skies had cleared as the band blasted Welcome to the Jungle before Slash unleashed his best performance of the night with a solo at the end of Live and Let Die, a concert-goer said.

Severe thunderstorm warning, watches in place across the country (RNZ)

Thousands of Aucklanders heading to concerts late this afternoon have been drenched as a heavy thunderstorm sweeps across the city.

Event-goers should also look out for each other and agree on a meeting point in case they became separated. Police said if people were drinking at tonight's events, they should have a pick-up organised or put aside money for a taxi or rideshare.
