Mitigating contamination of spices with rainforest alliance certification (Deccan Chronicle)

Kochi: High pesticide residues in spices especially turmeric and chilly have been a grave concern and impediment to the dietary and food supplement industry ...

The company has been successful in bringing down the level of pesticide contaminants consistently to minimal values across their batches of turmeric and chilly for over a year. Pesticide contamination not only impacts direct-to-consumer business but also directly correlates to the import of agricultural products. Contamination of spices occurs mainly through pollution from heavy metals, industrial emissions, effluents, and also through anthropogenic activities.

Contamination Control: Practical Steps to Compliance with EU GMP ... (MedTech Intelligence)

Depending on the results of periodic re-evaluation—if something changes or there are variations in readings for instance—the relevant risk assessment will need to be updated. A key task here will be to identify any gaps in provision (against Annex 1 specifications) that could undermine the new contamination controls and incur new risk. The overall CCS strategy will be the most time-consuming aspect to get right, with so many contributing elements. This suggests a cycle of re-evaluation and updating of local policies and overall strategy to ensure that measures are effective, remain relevant, and can be demonstrated as being so. Supporting such decisions will be the CCS and the ongoing risk assessments that feed into the CCS. Again, documenting all of this is crucial; without a formal record, manufacturers will be unable to demonstrate their rigor. Investments here will help reduce the burden of CCS and Quality risk management, too, building confidence through the minimized scope for contamination. These local risk assessments and the data they give rise to over time will feed into the CCS over time, so that it maintains its efficacy and robustness. Once a multidisciplinary team has been assembled, the next task is to prepare the policy, with input and approval from all stakeholders and the Quality director. Manufacturers should allow a minimum of two to three months to formulate a strong CCS strategy, ideally meeting once a week for around one to two hours. The team must have technical knowledge of the facilities, the equipment (e.g. All but one of the new provisions must be fulfilled by August 2023.

Plan commission approves Hartmeyer redevelopment despite ... (Chippewa Herald)

Decades of industrial use have contaminated the soil and groundwater, raising concerns about whether or how the site can be made safe for habitation.

A 1974 photo shows coal used to power the former Oscar Mayer plant on Madison's North Side. About 15 acres of the site, including wetlands shown here, will be given to the city for parkland. Developers are seeking to build low-income housing on the site. An architect's drawing shows two six-story apartment buildings that Lincoln Avenue Capital plans to build on vacant land next to the former Oscar Mayer plant on Madison's North Side. “The environmental issues will have to be addressed,” Cantrell said. “It’s exciting to see a developer interested in a brownfield, because it’s going to get cleaned up,” Bemis said. “Someday, people are going to look back and say, 'Who on earth thought this was a good place to live?'” If granted, the developer expects to begin construction this spring and have the apartments ready to rent by fall of 2024. We know they are responsible for the coal being piled there,” Powell said. She also wants the development shelved pending a more extensive survey of the contamination. The city’s Plan Commission voted unanimously Monday to approve conditional use permits for two six-story buildings: a 250-unit complex for seniors and a 303-unit building for families. The California-based developer says the $150 million project will provide badly needed affordable housing for seniors and low-wage workers.

Firefighting Foams Contaminating Drinking Water in WA (GovTech)

Today, every gallon from two water district wells must first be flushed through six enormous tanks, each filled with 40000 pounds of specially treated coal, ...

A Portland-based engineering firm, Brown and Caldwell, in May submitted a plan to build PFAS treatment systems at the six pump stations where water has tested at or above state action levels. Instead, he thinks that there are a multitude of small sources that find their way to stormwater runoff that then percolates into the aquifer. City water officials thought layers of soil and gravel in the aquifers have filtered almost all potential contaminants. The concentration exceeded the Defense Department's threshold of 70 parts per trillion for providing financial assistance to public water systems or other well owners who have suffered PFAS contamination that likely spread from military installations. The Navy funded a water treatment system that began operating in 2019. These tests have confirmed PFAS in eight of Lakewood's 33 wells exceeding the state action levels. And the Army's PFAS concerns prompted Lakewood district water officials to begin their own testing, which started in 2016. In a legal brief, their attorneys argued the Defense Department was aware of the health and environmental risks, filing as exhibits numerous Air Force and Navy studies of the firefighting foams. PFAS have been detected over state action levels at some wells in water systems that together serve close to 570,000 people, or 7.4% of the state population. Lakewood is one of more than a dozen Washington public water systems with detections above levels defined by the state to be suitable for long-term consumption — and widespread testing is just ramping up. The state action levels were set to protect people who drink the same water source over the course of their lifetimes. For PFOA, the 10 parts per trillion action level is the equivalent of a half drop placed in an Olympic-sized pool.

The council was split on an 8% increase and ultimately voted to increase the city’s Analysis of Social Services Evaluation Team (ASSET) funds by 6%, the same amount as last year. The council approved a 6% increase for funding requests from outside organizations. If significant changes happen for the fiscal year 2024, the city must create a new budget before the state deadline in March 2023. The appraisal of the land asserts the land does not have soil or groundwater contamination, according to city documents. “That joy of cleaning it up is being forced upon the taxpayers of Ames,” Gartin said.
