The hope is that Sheridan continues to journey into the new and exciting valleys of the story that can bring variation and diversity, and justify this new chapter in the Dutton legacy. The only intrigue sparked by this particular thread is merely to see more of the grizzled icon Ford and But, like any red-blooded Dutton, Jacob is focussed on his code, and Creighton broke that code, ravaging the land of a neighboring rancher. This storyline is quite intriguing – having a Dutton man bring his darkness to the colonial darkness of the continent is an interesting shift, but Spencer’s past is already the best developed this early in the show. But predictably, a Dutton man in a position of power is bound to ruffle a few feathers. Sheridan, through his writing, has seemingly endeared himself to a mass of Hollywood legends, who are springing to be a part of his projects in droves, but you can see how much Mirren especially believes in the words and the character he has written for her. Jacob has established himself as Livestock Commissioner, which of course, is a major part of the Dutton legacy, as his descendents would clench that position in their fist for generations to come. If not for the wisdom of Aunt Cara, the wedding may have been off, but Cara is as steadfast, intelligent and in control as the actor who portrays her. As we know, Sheridan does not write weak-willed female characters, and we see perhaps the most ferocity in any of them when Teonna must stand up for herself against the abuse within the school. One of the more lighthearted subplots in the 1923 premiere is meeting young Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), a sprout of a man as passionate and energetic as his aunt Elsa was in her youth. In reality, we learn quickly that this family’s struggle hasn’t changed much for the almost century and a half they’ve been on the land.

Woven around that are other story threads: a strict Catholic boarding school on the frontier in which Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) endures horrific abuse, that of and Jacob’s nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), who is in Africa. In a sense, 1923 also serves as a bridge connecting the modern world of Yellowstone, and the franchise’s already released origin story, 1883. 1923 is a sprawling saga of land, power and ambition. In America the Paramount Network, which served as its launchpad, is the off-piste analog cousin of the studio’s digital platform, Paramount+. It’s almost a soap, but you pause before you say it, lest you offend against the calibre of its stars. Indeed, it’s not immediately certain that Taylor Sheridan’s new series 1923 is entirely a western in the accepted sense.

For another, the episode ends with a snobby British lady getting mauled by a leopard while she’s outside trying to pee. It’s unlikely that Spencer Dutton is going to start imitating Groucho, but 1923 could certainly use a character who’s aware of how ludicrous things can get. While the husbands get a life of property disputes and endless cattle drives, their wives get an unfettered existence that many American women of the era were denied. Instead, this subplot is treated reverentially, as though a pair of killer leopards is a Moby Dick-level metaphor. In an early comic gem, Jacob is presiding over a meeting, and when two herders start arguing, the entire room breaks into fisticuffs. When Sister Mary physically abuses Teonna for getting a question wrong, or when Teonna whispers with a friend that nobody who leaves the school is ever heard from again, the show evokes the dehumanizing terror of the place. The extra tragedy is that she tries to ameliorate her own sense of powerlessness by hurting her students, who have even less power than she does. Granted, they also have to do hard manual labor while still fulfilling the roles of mothers, wives, and nurturers, but there’s a liveliness to Cara’s argument that could prove fruitful as the show progresses. I know they’re wildly popular, and I know they’re about the multigenerational trials of the wealthy and powerful Dutton family. With a fever of excitement, Mirren makes the liberation of the ranching life seem almost like paradise. Take the scenes with Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle), a brutal nun at an American Indian boarding school, and Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), a student who resists the “cultural reeducation” she’s forced to endure. Every mud-splattered lady burns with loneliness as she balances her need for a man’s affection with the chores that need doing.
