Looking for something Christmasy but not too sweet? John McClane, Harry Potter, and the Gremlins got you covered.

[Wes Anderson](https://collider.com/tag/wes-anderson/)’s The Royal Tenenbaums is an [ideal modern Christmas movie](https://collider.com/tag/christmas/). [Stanley Kubrick](https://collider.com/stanley-kubrick-movies-ranked/) in the dreamy scenes of [Eyes Wide Shut](https://collider.com/tag/eyes-wide-shut/). ( [Leonardo Dicaprio](https://collider.com/tag/leonardo-dicaprio/)) is cut off from a normal life by literally having him look in on a holiday setting that would make Norman Rockwell puke. When compared to [others in the Potter franchise](https://collider.com/best-harry-potter-movies-ranked-worst-to-best/) and its number of holiday-heavy scenes, this film in particular uses the setting particularly well as Harry discovers he has a new family to celebrate with while the arrival of a mysterious gift picks at his desire for his old one. [arms of acceptance](https://collider.com/batman-returns-max-shreck-is-forgotten-villain/) around Christmas. [Edward Scissorhands](https://collider.com/tag/edward-scissorhands/) from the filmmaking king of the loners himself, Tim Burton. [Die Hard](https://collider.com/tag/die-hard/)? [Nora Ephron](https://collider.com/tag/nora-ephron/)’s directorial opus You’ve Got Mail — inspired by the charming 1940 Ernst Lubitsch film starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, The Shop Around the Corner — may be a gem to celebrate with family and friends, but the narrative uses sequences set around the holidays to showcase [how hollow their individual partnerships seem](https://collider.com/youve-got-mail-other-adaptations-same-play/). [Christmas obviously aids reflection](https://collider.com/tag/christmas-movies/), but Little Women goes further by acknowledging its power to mark time and remind us that the new beginnings for what we desire means harsh endings for that which we have. Louis](https://collider.com/meet-me-in-st-louis-flashes-darkness-explained/) is a perfect classic to watch year-round. Similar to [Lethal Weapon](https://collider.com/tag/lethal-weapon/) and his other movies, Die Hard highlights the disgruntled solitude of its main character by contrasting him with holiday revelry.

10 LGBTQ+ Christmas films to get you in the holiday spirit, from the good to the not-so-good ... An edited image with three separate film stills shown. The first ...

Dashing in December is basically a mix of Christmas at the Ranch and The Christmas Setup. Let’s be real for a minute – Christmas at the Ranch is about as derivative as it gets, and that’s OK. It’s anchored by crafted performances from Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, and it has some of the heartwarming moments we need in a Christmas film. Carol might not be your typical Christmas film, but it’s impossible to deny it has a wintery aesthetic. We don’t have the answer to that, but we can recommend Dashing in December. If you’re familiar with Lifetime’s Christmas offering, you won’t be too surprised by the plot of Under The Christmas Tree. Single All The Way does nothing new, but it’s still a heartwarming Christmas film that feels authentically queer. That’s not to say everything is perfect – there’s still a marked lack of diversity in the mix, with the bulk of LGBTQ+ Christmas films centring on white, middle-class families. We all know the formula by now – a successful woman gives up her career to shack up with a tall muscular man with a beard who happens to have a tragic backstory. [Ugly Betty star Michael Urie](https://www.thepinknews.com/2021/11/30/single-all-the-way-michael-urie-netflix-gay/) stars opposite newcomer Philemon Chambers in the Netflix romantic comedy Single All The Way. There’s just one problem – Harper isn’t out to her family, so they must pretend they’re just friends for the festive season. The chemistry between

10 Best Christmas Movies To Watch With Kids (CBR)

So many Christmas movies, from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to Elf, are enjoyable for the whole family and will remain classics for generations.

The Year Without a Santa Claus also saw a live-action remake of the same name Mickey Rooney voiced Kris, the man who would be Santa Claus, and reprised the role in a few other specials: The Year Without a Santa Claus, Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July and A Miser Brothers' Christmas. Over the years, The Santa Clause later inspired movie sequels and a Disney+ series. Despite the title, The Year Without a Santa Claus manages to still have a last-second happy ending. As the story ends, a storm threatens Santa's Christmas deliveries, but Rudolph's nose fortunately comes in handy. Elf has developed a following over the years, in addition to inspiring a Broadway musical and an animated special. Though, early in development, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future were meant to be played by Miss Piggy, an otherwise absent Scooter, and Gonzo, respectively. Mickey's Christmas Carol was originally based on an audio play, "An Adaptation of Dickens's Christmas Carol," and saw much of the Disney characters reprise their roles. The BBC also produced a version with an English-speaking narrator talking over and explaining the story. In this version of the classic story, Cinderella is gifted three magic hazelnuts that grant her wishes, allowing her to encounter the kingdom's prince. The children soon become inspired to be on their best behavior, in turn inspiring the people of Smeerensburg to move past their feud. It also helps that different countries have their own holiday traditions and each new year sees the release of even more Christmas stories for future generations to enjoy.

He soon discovers that the townsfolk are superstitious and believe that every 25 years an angel visits their candlemaker and blesses a special Christmas Candle with a miracle to whoever lights it. [The Nativity Story](https://movieweb.com/movie/the-nativity-story/) (starring a young Oscar Isaac) takes viewers back to the beginning, back to when Mary and Joseph were wed and started their life together. It’s a classic tale that rings true for Christians, as it’s what the season is all about. Watch the events that led up to the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem and the uncertainty Mary felt at marrying a man she initially didn’t love. Nearly everyone knows the tale of a grumpy old man who seems to hate everything, including Christmas. The Perfect Gift is a 2009 Christian movie about the true meaning of Christmas. Indeed, Jesus’ birth is entirely what Christmas is all about, and A Charlie Brown Christmas does a great job of highlighting that without being too preachy. The Perfect Gift is full of heart and will put you in the giving spirit! The Star is an overall great film that appeals to both children and adults. It’s a time when Christians rejoice the birth of their Savior. Christians celebrate it as the birth of Jesus Christ and as a time of gift-giving.

It will warm you from the inside out and give you something to laugh about when you realise that a nearly forty-year-old James Stewart is supposed to be in his early twenties. Often cited as the definitive Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Life has outlasted all of its contemporaries and is still loved almost eighty years after its initial release. Buddy’s love of the holiday is infectious, and Ferrell’s physical comedy makes it a great choice for all ages. Die Hard is for anyone who loves guns and explosions, making it THE choice if you’re a fifteen-year-old boy and/or Transformers fan. If nothing else, it’s an excuse to pretend that Hugh Grant is the Prime Minister for a couple of hours, which might allow you to feel something other than complete despair about certain current events. Watching Emma Thompson realise that her husband (Alan Rickman) has another woman in his life is subtle yet devastating, and it’s scenes like this that add an emotional depth and nuance to the film, which solidifies its place as a classic of British cinema.
