Home Alone: Could Anyone Really Survive Those Boobytraps? (Den of Geek)

The Home Alone films are a festive feast of burglar-baiting traps. A new documentary starring James Acaster and Guz Khan looks into the science of how – if ...

It turns out there’s 3000 kg of force behind those swinging paint tins – ‘like a three-tonne van slamming into you’, according to Dr Zoe – which would have left the Wet Bandits with cracked skulls, brain damage, broken noses, severe whiplash, broken teeth and (our old friend) likely death. But would a real-life Harry and Marv have survived the kinds of traps Kevin set them? Or, in the words of Doctor Zoe, ‘What Marv experienced was enough electricity to kill someone. Then they’ll put these theories to the test by taking on the stunts themselves in an attempt to catch their own adorable little Kevin McAllister. The Home Alone films are a festive feast of burglar-baiting traps. Generations of children watched those poor Wet Bandits get slowly, painfully tortured in their quest to nick a telly and some loose change.

Replace Home Alone With Deadly Games This Christmas (Den of Geek)

Alain Lalanne stars as Thomas, a single mother's son whose only tether to childhood is his steadfast belief in Santa Claus. Otherwise, Thomas copes with his ...

While the song yearns for the promise of Christmas putting an end to war and selfishness, we see just how far off our world has become, to the point that a little boy has to prepare to kill the one magical thing he still believed in. Clinging to the snow-covered baffles, his exposed arms shivering in the cold, Thomas bawls for his mother while the camera swirls around the exterior to underscore just how alone he is. Later, an audacious montage shows Thomas gearing up for the final conflict, bandaging the gash on his leg and filling a toy grenade with gunpowder, while a cheesy ballad plays. With this juxtaposition in play, Deadly Games can be all the more graphic in its violence. But when the man kicks and then kills Thomas’s dog, Thomas doesn’t swear revenge: he huddles in shock, because he’s a child. As fierce as Thomas wants to be, with a sneer peeking out from under the red headband he wraps around his chest, he’s just a kid playing dress up and the movie never lets us forget it. The grandson of a wildly successful toy store founder, Thomas seems to embody every kid’s dream, living in a giant mansion with all the toys in the world. But her tearful reunion with Kevin lasts only a few minutes, a pittance compared to the first act, in which the McCallisters dump on Kevin simply because they can. With his wits, gadgets, and Rambo cosplay, Thomas goes to war with the one sliver of hope he had left: Father Christmas. But when we see Thomas and his mother together, we realize that she’s doing the best she can. The camera swirls chaotically around the invader as he batters the boy’s hiding spot with a sledgehammer while discordant metal music squeals on the soundtrack. As a result, its violence is more shocking, its stakes much higher, and its emotion is better earned.

'Home Alone II' - Exploring Strategic Alternatives (or lack thereof) (vorys.com)

There may or may not be a viable alternative for the institution, and whether temporary or otherwise the “Home Alone” scenario is one of the many important alternatives to be carefully (and realistically) considered by the board as it analyzes the short and long-term prospects for the institution and the best interests of its constituencies. A successful “Home Alone” experience, whether temporary or permanent, can result in the institution becoming a stronger, healthier, and more profitable organization that is in far better condition to make objective decisions regarding its future in a thoughtful and less-pressured manner. In all instances, the use of experienced advisors and consultants, including financial analysts, investment bankers, and legal counsel, is critical to provide independent and objective advice necessary to examine the relative pros and cons, and to assist the board in its decision-making process. For institutions exploring the potential for a sale without the certainty (or perhaps even the likelihood) of an acquisition by a stronger institution, it is important to be prepared to implement measures necessary to tough it out and to survive independently, at least on an interim basis until a viable transaction environment emerges. In reality, this process or something similar should take place on a regular basis in order to provide the board with needed information in order to remain mindful of the best interests of the institution, which may change from time to time. With historic rate changes and new accounting rules, not to mention inflation, and with caution as the watchword in the financial services industry, bank M&A activity is “cautious” at best in the current environment.

Roger Ebert claimed 'Home Alone 3' was better than the originals (Far Out Magazine)

The late Roger Ebert was a notoriously hard taskmaster. After all, he did not become the most eminent film critic for wishy-washy takes.

I don’t know if he’ll have a career like his predecessor, Macaulay Culkin (for his sake, I sort of hope not), but he has the same glint in his eye.” In what might be the most controversial take of his career, in December 1997, Ebert reviewed the third film in the franchise, Home Alone 3. I know the formula, and so does the movie (written, like the first two, by John Hughes). Although Ebert had a problem with many films, two surprising titles particularly irked him: the first two Home Alone instalments. [1967’s Bonnie and Clyde](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/bonnie-and-clyde-arthur-penn-unveils-the-real-american-dream/) had a defining hand in changing how audiences approached cinema, with the project later celebrated as a “rallying cry” of the counterculture. On the other hand, Ebert was also distinguished for his ability to champion titles that were either unconventional or downright underdogs.
