"The tricky part is that it’s nearly impossible in this kind of weather situation to pinpoint exactly where each thunderstorm cloud will develop and move. Such high amounts of rain falling during a short period can cause surface or flash flooding in any places where this may happen," says MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan. Changeable weather is expected to continue through the week with showers on and off for most of the country, mainly during the afternoons and evenings, and temperatures will be typical for most.

What will the weather be like on Christmas Day where you live? (SBS)

Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and even Hobart are all forecast to enjoy clear skies, with only a small chance of any rain (20 per cent or less) on ...

The forecast for Christmas eve across Australia shows it will be a relatively dry day, free of rainfall in parts of the country. But pretty much everyone else should be dry, warm and sunny." Northern areas of Queensland, WA and the NT could experience rain of 50mm and under over a six-hour interval. Mr Narramore said Christmas Day weather conditions were expected to be similar across a large part of the country with at least three cities forecast to be around 30C and sunny. Victoria is looking at warm and sunny weather through the northern parts of the state, temperatures in the low to mid 30s up along the Murray, while temperatures in southern Victorian were expected to be in the mid to high 20s. "The focus of the weather by the time we get to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will mostly be around Queensland and the Northern Territory where we'll see rain and storms. In NSW, it's expected to be warm and sunny in much of the state, with the chance of a shower in the far northeast. "Maybe some showers and storms up around the Kimberley and a bit cooler on the south coast, but generally looking like a really nice day right across the state," Mr Narramore said. Perth is forecast to remain sunny in the days ahead, with maximum temperatures in the early thirties right up to and including on Christmas Day. "We could see some showers around western and southern parts of the state, a little bit cooler down there as well temperatures in the mid to high teens to western and southern parts of Tasmania," Mr Narramore said. "[It's expected to be] partly cloudy in Hobart with just a chance of a shower, but a little bit warmer into the low 20s across eastern and northern Tasmania ahead of that front." While temperatures in capitals on the east coast are expected to be in the 20s, Canberra could reach 30C, Adelaide is also forecast to have a top of 30C and Darwin 32C.

Santa shouldn't need to shed a layer as he delivers to Perth this year, with the city set for its mildest Christmas Day maximum temperature in seven years.

"Halls Creek is heading for a maximum temperature of just 29 degrees so it is actually going to be cooler in Halls Creek than it is in Perth on Christmas Day." "We are still going to see some of those warm temperatures in the high 30s or low 40s," she said. "And that means that actually parts of the Kimberley are going for a relatively cool Christmas Day. "Kalgoorlie is heading for a temperature in the low 40s on Christmas Day." "Northern parts of the Central Wheatbelt and through the Goldfields are actually going to experience quite a warm Christmas," she said. "Temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s," she said.

Thunderstorms to lash North Island, MetService warns of flash floods ... (New Zealand Herald)

It's been a stormy start to summer and it's not over yet – much of the North Island is sitting beneath a severe thunderstorm watch today.

The warning stretches from Hamilton to Wellington, and will last until 9pm tonight. The chaotic conditions follow on from a day of torrential rain in Auckland and parts of Whangārei. MetService reports the unsettled conditions are the result of cool temperatures at upper levels and warm humid conditions near the surface, which are expected to bring convective conditions to much of the North Island.
