Trouble brews in the run up to every global, mega sporting event — such as buses not running on time, or venues seemingly not ready for action.

But if it does, Qadri says, the standards to host may be different, considering the controversies that shared the stage with soccer. "There has been a lot of fear," Powar said, "that the [Qatari] regime may well start to sort of bring back measures that clamp down on the community. And as many turn their gaze away from a tiny Gulf nation that became huge for a month, Qadri, Powar and others will keep watching and fighting. But they're very clear that they don't think it's the waving of the rainbow flag. Where they talk about the things they think might result in freedom for them. They worry, Powar says, there might be a backlash after all the discussion and attempted demonstrations of rainbow solidarity during the tournament. "A big sporting event like these create memories," Powar says, "positive memories. And Qadri says, some described employer attempts to cover things up by hiding the workers from labor inspectors. And that's a really big part of what we're trying to do, which is to give a voice to these people who don't have a voice. Many also supported the government's position As this World Cup approached there was nothing benign about the potential threat to fans from LGBTQ communities – homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. And those controversies did not disappear when the first match kicked off.

The emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, is an IOC member and Qatar has already bid for the 2016, 2020 and 2032 Games. Qatar and Saudi Arabia should launch a joint Olympic bid, copying the co-hosting of the next World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada and other big events, Reiche said. "It remains to see how long the Arab unity and revitalisation of the FIFA World Cup 2022 will last after the final whistle," said Danyel Reiche, an associate professor at Georgetown University in Qatar who is leading a World Cup project. Qatar also stepped in when China withdrew from holding the 2023 Asian Cup football and is to stage the world swimming championships in 2024. During the tournament, Qatar was awarded the 2025 world table tennis championships and the opening race of the world endurance championship in 2024, adding to its packed sports calendar. Doha (AFP) – After the World Cup earned Qatar both plaudits and censure, the energy-rich Gulf state is now starting a marathon to secure the 2036 Olympics and a place as a pillar of world sport.

Messi, Mbappe give Qatar the perfect World Cup ending (Associated Press)

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — When it comes to soccer, money can buy the world. It can pay for the World Cup . And the world's best players. And it can bundle them all ...

But they ultimately backed down when FIFA threatened to issue yellow cards to the players involved, saying it was a contravention of its regulations. By Sunday’s final, the narrative was fixed on Messi’s mission to emulate Argentina great Diego Maradona by leading his country to a World Cup title. “Obviously, I wanted to complete my career with this, (I) can’t ask for more.” The committee later said he was referring to work-related deaths from 2014-2020, not specifically for the World Cup. “Qatar wants to be a hub for global sporting and cultural events, and so should know that scrutiny will continue,” Cockburn said. Messi was beaming with pride as he tenderly kissed the cup of solid gold. And it can bundle them all up into a perfect package and present it to a global audience of millions. “I think Qatar will benefit from this going forward. “The match was completely insane,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said afterwards. “They’ve been very open-minded to it,” he added. “Hosting the World Cup has brought far more attention on the treatment of migrant workers in Qatar and the rest of the Gulf than would otherwise have been the case, as well as the responsibility of sporting bodies such as FIFA.” And the world’s best players.

With epic World Cup final, has Qatar helped its reputation? - analysis (The Jerusalem Post)

While the West talks about democracy, it often outsources its security to regimes like Ankara. This is why Qatar, Pakistan and many other regimes are key ...

That means that whereas there was some critique of Qatar about worker’s rights, there was no attempt to prevent it from hosting the World Cup and force reforms. All Doha had to do was appear to be doing the right thing and not use an openly authoritarian hand. Pakistan backed the Taliban and hosted extremists linked to al-Qaeda in the 1990s, yet this was a US partner. Qatar brought the spotlight to the Gulf and the region, and many feel the net positive from that. In fact, Turkey has made it hard for democracies like Finland and Sweden to join the alliance. However, this does not extend to standing up to historic Western partners on these issues. The Qatari hosts appear to have regained some of the spotlight that was marred by how the event came about. However, with the world’s eyes on the final game, no one was thinking of this dark cloud. For instance, historically, the US preferred to partner with Pakistan rather than India – a policy that changed only recently. However, it still holds immense power through media networks and think tanks, as well as likely partnerships with big tech companies. And the death of two senior sports journalists also raised eyebrows, even though health experts said the deaths were natural. This prompted congratulations from other Gulf states, including ones that have recently been critical of Doha.

Day after Greatest World Cup final: Qatar empties, leaving behind ... (The Indian Express)

Thousands hung in the vicinity of the Lusail Stadium, to soak in the atmosphere, to fully absorb the slice of history they had seen.

For a month they were in a dream-land; on the tiny peninsula were the eyes of the world, the colour of the globe. Some would stay as emblems of the days Qatar hosted the World Cup. And the days and nights after Sunday will be long and boring. The metro, the lifeblood and rendezvous for socialising of the tourists, would have as much space to play football. To the tedium of everyday life. You could hear most languages and dialects in the world, see a variety of different costumes, tap your feet to the most indigenous of percussion instruments. Qatar is crawling back to normalcy, to the days before the World Cup. It was not what they might have imagined Qatar to be, but the Qatar World Cup was fun, thrilling and beyond the wildest imagination. When the hangover of the World Cup ends, it is such moments that would be missed as Qatar reacquaints itself with a life after the World Cup. In spare time, he would visit the national museum, library, and soak in the old-world grandeur for Souq Waqif and Msheireb. I can only imagine how excited the Argentina fans in Qatar are at the moment and best of luck to them – their supporters deserve to see Lionel Messi lift the World Cup. And this could be the greatest football match I would ever see.
