"I think George would be excited, his friends all coming together," said Nancy Jones, widow of the country legend.

“He was a funny man and didn’t even know he was funny,” she says. Nancy’s currently working on a book about her life with George, tentatively titled “Jesus and Jones.” Nancy says George didn’t listen to a lot of music at home, but in the car he listened to recordings by fellow country legend Willie Nelson. George and Nancy Jones resided in Texas for a while then moved to Nashville. A friend of Nancy’s who was dating one of George’s managers played matchmaker and she flew to New York together to watch one of George’s concerts. He’d chartered a plane, rented a car and was sitting in my driveway.” Although Jones’ hard living earned him the nickname “No Show Jones,” he eventually straightened up after he and Nancy got together. When you feel a song, you can sing it and he did.” “And we got them all out.” The “Still Playing Possum” concert will take place 10 years after Jones passed at age 81. A $200 VIP upgrade includes dinner the night before the concert with Nancy Jones and friends. He was mostly a ballad man, but it was like he lived and breathed every one of them.

His guest vocal on Patty Loveless' "You Don't Seem To Miss Me" won a CMA award for top vocal event in 1998, and it became his final Top 20 country hit. His solo career cooled until 1980, when he recorded "He Stopped Loving Her Today," a ballad penned by Curly Putman and Bobby Braddock that helped Jones win Country Music Association prizes for best male vocal and top single. His first number-one hit came in 1959 with "White Lightning," a Mercury Records single that topped Billboard country charts for five weeks. Jones is regarded among the most important and influential singers in American popular music history.
