The 50 best Christmas movies of all time (NME.com)

From 'Love Actually' to 'Die Hard', there's a festive flick for all tastes, whether you're into Christmas romcoms or holiday horror flicks.

The candy-coated Whoville setting looks absolutely gorgeous and Carrey is allowed to be as weird, wacky and wonderful as he likes. Whimsical but with just the right amount of cynicism, The Santa Clause went on to inspire two sequels and a new TV series. Intense, stylistic and brooding, Batman Returns manages to blend the gritty reality of the caped crusader with the ridiculousness of his rogues’ gallery. Shenanigans ensue as grumpy bosses clash with outlandish employees, and almost everyone works together to save their jobs (and the spirit of Christmas). A wonderful alternative origin story to the legend of Father Christmas, Klaus is a delightful animation set in 19th-century Norway. Two bickering siblings hitch a ride in Santa’s sleigh before it crashes and they have to help Kurt Russell to save the holidays. This festive TV special helped to solidify Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang as icons. Tim Burton’s fantasy romance is about an unfinished humanoid (Johnny Depp) struggling to come to terms with life in suburban America. All Bruce Willis’ John McClane wants for Christmas is to pick up wife Holly from the airport. A family squabble causes a young boy to lose his Christmas spirit. A follow-up to the 1974 film of the same name (which pretty much created the slasher genre), Black Christmas puts iconic villain Billy very much in the spotlight. We’ve rounded up the 50 best films about Christmas – or at least set during the holiday season – to carry you through to the New Year.

Regardless of age, The Grinch is a firm favorite and a perfect movie to watch with family. Of course, both are iconic Christmas films, but the former has more fun and can be targeted much more toward children in the family. Kevin is home alone after his family leaves for the airport and accidentally leaves him behind. Many now-adults and parents were raised on the adventures of Pooh bear and his friends, and it is a joy to see them on screen during the holidays. The Miracle on 34th Street is that Santa Claus has come to town, and he’s the real thing. [It is a short film](https://www.cbr.com/short-films-that-could-be-full-length/) that manages to pack in such magic and wonder. Not every Christmas movie is a hit, and they’re not all suitable for all audiences. Therefore, it is key to find the best fit for all during the festive season. Of course, their attempts to avoid romance don’t go to plan, and their lives get all the more complicated. 'Tokyo Godfathers' Is the Best Christmas Movie You've Never Seen (Collider.com)

It's time to add a new movie to your yearly repertoire and it's Satoshi Kon's animated Japanese film Tokyo Godfathers.

It’s about the mundane magic of Christmas and a triumph of the human spirit, and what’s more Christmas-like than that? A family can be one you choose for yourself, hope can be found in the face of a smiling child, and miracles can be regular acts of kindness. Christmas is a season when we look out for each other and Tokyo Godfathers shows us this in the most straightforward of terms. The whole plot is Hana, Gin, and Miyuki trying to get Kiyoko home, and yet we see time and again how this was only possible because of the kindness of others. This film is about the spirit of giving in a less conventional way. The film takes a more It’s A Wonderful Life type approach to the holiday season, showing us a story of struggle and renewal that’s imbued with the magic of Christmas. It’s a film characterized by dichotomies: the kindness of these people and the cruelty they face, their selfless quest and their selfish pasts, the magic of Christmas and the harsh realities of the winter season. A group of homeless people isn’t exactly your stock-standard Christmas movie cast, but they manage to demonstrate the spirit of the season more than anyone. These characters have done things they aren’t proud of, yet they manage to forgive and understand each other not just because it’s the time of year for forgiveness but because they care enough to understand each other. Though the three have different reasons for acting the way they do, they all look out for each other throughout their journey, and ultimately share the same goal of doing whatever they can to see this child find a safe home. Gin feels a responsibility to give the child to someone he feels could do the most good for the child. She performed at a drag bar for a while but after a confrontation with an abusive customer, Hana left the bar, and when she eventually lost her husband she ended up on the streets.

'Tis the season of holiday movies. Here are the best, and cheesiest ... (Miami Herald)

'Tis the season of holiday movies. Here are the best, and cheesiest | Opinion. By the Miami Herald Editorial Board. December 23, 2022 4:49 PM.

It’s about an emotionally disconnected slacker who has never worked a day in his life and starts to suspect he’s shallow — truly festive stuff — but it has all the requisite themes: a horribly embarrassing school talent show, a life-affirming moral and a whole lot of Hugh Grant. And that’s the beauty of this movie. Some will argue that the movie is kind of stupid or that Schwarzenegger can’t act well, but they’re letting their inner critic override their ability to laugh at a fun ‘90s flick. An ode to Christmas capitalism, this movie is the perfect satire on how far parents will go to buy their children’s love around the holidays. Finally, a movie that depicts the backbone of Christmas in America: Mainstream consumerism. Ferrell’s singing is not the reason to see this movie, but we suspect that’s intentional (or we hope so), making the movie’s ability to laugh at itself and the Christmas-musical genre worth a watch. There have been a slew of film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ novel “A Christmas Carol,” but “Spirited,” released this year on Apple TV, deserves an honorable mention. Nowadays, the name Macaulay Culkin might inspire a “Whatever happened to him?” But in the 1990s, he was America’s most famous child star. As a bonus, “Home Alone” takes us back to when Donald Trump wasn’t inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol. That is what makes this movie a modern Christmas classic. After spending 2022 writing about Florida’s culture wars, heady topics like homeowners insurance reform and government officials behaving badly, the members of the Herald Editorial Board, too, is ready to immerse themselves in low-stakes topics like ranking Christmas movies. Christmas flicks provide the exact type of snow-covered escapism that we need this time of the year.

13 Holidays Films That Are Streaming For You This Christmas (GameSpot)

1. Nightmare Before Christmas (Disney+) · 2. Elf (HBO Max) · 3. The Muppet Christmas Carol (Disney+) · 4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas - (Peacock) · 5. Jack Frost ...

The movie spawned a pair of sequels and a new series, all of which you can also watch on Disney+. When a young boy accidentally summons Krampus to his home on Christmas, his whole family is going to suffer the consequences. A Christmas Story is the simple story of a boy who wants to convince his parents to get him the ultimate Christmas present--a Red Ryder Range 200-Shot BB gun. Don't worry about the warm fuzzy feelings that come with holiday spirit, just the warm fuzzy feelings that come from your local dispensary. If you choose the one on Peacock, you'll get the 1997 movie about a snowman inhabited by the spirit of a murderous psychopath. A Christmas Story is filled with all of the awkward childhood Christmas moments adults will remember, and someone gets their tongue stuck to a metal pole. If you pick the one on HBO Max, you'll get the 1998 Michael Keaton movie about a man who, after being killed in a car accident, comes back as a snowman to make things right with his son. With so many versions of A Christmas Carol out there, how can you pick just one? Is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie, or a Christmas movie? Peacock even has a Hallmark-specific channel if you want the authentic Hallmark Christmas experience. The trouble these days is that there are literally hundreds and hundreds of Christmas movies across streaming services thanks to the proliferation of Hallmark Channel-style holiday films. Of course, that didn't stop us from wading into the pool to pick out some of the absolute best Christmas movies that are streaming right now so that you don't have to.
