Swiss roll or queen cakes. Sherry, rum or orange juice. Custard powder or custard cream. Fruits, eg, kiwis, strawberries and blueberries. 250ml cream.
You can also prepare the trifle up until this stage the day before. You can make your own custard from scratch if you are feeling fancy. If you want your trifle to be alcohol-free โ you can use orange juice. Add a good slug of brandy (or sherry if you prefer) to the crumbs โ enough to soak the cake. Add a few slices of your favourite fruit around the edge of the bowl. Crumble queen cakes or Swiss roll into the bottom of a glass bowl to make a layer of approx 1/4 way up the bowl.
