REWIND: Five new(ish) hard rock Christmas songs (RIFF)

Broken Peach celebrates Christmas. Courtesy. I'm back! I missed a couple weeks—I covered a W.A.S.P. show and got ludicrously sick—but…

I ranked his cover of Adele’s “Hello” as a tie with the actual song in my [best songs of 2015](https://riffmagazine.com/mp3/riff-rewind-2015/). Then suddenly, as recently as last year or this, it went from our national scourge to a time-honored changing of the seasons. Once they do a version, it officially belongs to the universe. If this song turns into a standard that means we’ll get versions other than the original Mariah Carey and society as a whole wins. And yes, that’s the second zombie Santa of the list. show](https://riffmagazine.com/reviews/wasp-20221209/) and got ludicrously sick—but my Christmas present to you is my triumphant return. This one’s another Christmas standard, written in 1951 by Meredith Willson, who also did “The Music Man” and the score for Charlie Chaplin’s classic “The Great Dictator.” Also, if you’re confused by the name, he’s a dude. Of course this specific version is new, and I really like it, so it makes the list. The band needs to expand to second- and third-tier holidays as well. [Lindsay Stirling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKkzbbLYPuI), [Pentatonix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSUFzC6_fp8) and every other musician who makes most of their money from YouTube covers. This is the sort of nonsense I like. [new Christmas song roundup](https://riffmagazine.com/mp3/pentatonix-and-more-holiday-songs-20221222/), because while the actual problem was more or less resolved, the whole not eating or sleeping for a week thing really takes a lot out of a guy.

Good luck convincing a jury you feel religiously oppressed by “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”—it could just as easily be “I’ll Be Home for Taco Night.” This is why a quick Google search for “nonreligious Christmas carols” will turn up reams of playlists specifically designed to help employers fend off objections from the likes of you. If not, can I make them stop on the same religious-freedom grounds that make it illegal for them to have mandatory Christian prayers?

A fair few artists have taken on “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” but the version we’re looking at for this list is from Johnny Cash. Together, the pop staples performed an original Christmas tune “Glittery.” While the track sticks close to the hallmarks of holiday music—a cheerful melody and endless references to the 25th—Musgraves and Sivan add in a modern pop flare that makes “Glittery” a welcomed change of pace for any Christmas playlist. He plays the part of a wayward cowboy in this one, developing his own Christmas traditions underneath the sky and the wide open range. He gives solace amid the holidays with his 1975 release “Christmas for Cowboys.” This somber track is tailor-made for cozying up to the fire with hot cocoa in hand. Up first is “Christmas Tree Farm” by Taylor Swift. Bing Crosby’s baritone will lull you to sleep on this one as he croons When I’m worried and I can’t sleep / I count my blessings instead of sheep.

What a wonderful message to ponder this time of year, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. As I think about it, Light of the World actually might be my favorite Christmas song. This in definitely not like the version found in your hymnbook and every time we sing it at church, I think of this version. I love this version of the song. I just think it’s awesome to hear Christmas songs in the languages that would have been spoken near the time of Jesus’ birth. There is a palpable joy in this up-tempo soulful tune, that makes me want to tap my feet and sing out loud. This might be one of my favorite Lauren Daigle songs. Below is a list of songs I think you should add to your Christmas playlists this year. Many of these singers are not members of our Church, but they share their love of the Savior through music; and that’s something we can all unite behind. Spice up your Christmas playlist with our list of songs that haven't been played to death.

This isn’t the only time Blink have delved into the world of the Christmas song, and it remains a crying shame that John Lewis didn’t pick ‘Happy Holidays You B*****d’ for their saccharine advert, the cowards. Included on 2020’s Evermore, there’s not much Christmas spirit to be found in Swift’s tale of high school sweethearts reuniting in their home town for the holidays and wondering what might have been. You may recognise this one from Die Hard – which is a Christmas film by the way – and if you don’t Jam Master Jay’s infectious beat, which samples Clarence’s Carter’s Back Door Santa, will have it looping around your head well past turkey time. Carly Rae Jepsen documents the phenomenon here, with an uncle who brings up politics, kids getting up far too early and a vegan boyfriend who’s been served fish. Traditionally the male voice in the song pressures the female one to stay with him, while she asks “say, what’s in this drink?”. The Killers release a Christmas song every year and it’s almost always naff, but this 2007 effort hit the spot.

Musical Christmas gifts: New festive songs from Kalush Orchestra ... (wiwibloggs)

Listen to the new Christmas songs from Eurovision stars, including music by Kalush Orchestra, Poli Genova, Subwoolfer and more.

Armenia’s Eurovision 2014 star is celebrating “Nor Tari” (“New Year”). The Romanian folk song runs through the Biblical Christmas story, which is also portrayed in the music video: “Jesus the Son on earth / We bring wishes as a gift / Happy New Year holidays”. [first released by the band Līvi](https://youtu.be/fI3Z4GmTraE). Latvian TV channel TV3 will begin welcoming in the New Year with TV show Nākamā pietura – 2023 (Next stop – 2023). Paula Seling has gifted us “Cel Mai Frumos Colind” (“The Most Beautiful Carol”). “Having Grandma Here For Christmas” is a comedic pop track that plays on what it truly means to have your family around for the holiday: “Then use your bathtub as a baking tray / Be sure that you remove the giblets then / Wait for the fun to begin / We’re having grandma here for Christmas, Ooh”. Iceland’s Eurovision 2022 trio have released a cover of “Silent Night”. One of the newly-written songs is “Happy Face”, which Bulgaria’s two-time Eurovision star released a music video for ahead of the album release. The Eurovision 2009 runner-up delivers a mid-tempo track with a key change three quarters of the way through. Musically, “Her vi hører til” (“Here we belong”) is a beautiful ballad that captures the feeling of snow gracefully falling from the sky. “When I look at you / And when you look at me / Will it be clear / This is where we belong”. “In anticipation of the Christmas holidays, everyone wants a miracle.

Eartha Kitt's Other Christmas Songs Will Have You Looking At 'Santa Baby' In A Whole New Way (NNN)

Feminist publication Ms Magazine, on the other hand, included Kitt's sultry tune on its list of the Top 10 Feminist Christmas Songs in 2020, with Julia Cornick writing: “[Kitt] she was ahead of her time when it came to sex positivity during the '50s ...

Bennett, “Nothin’ for Christmas” is paired with another of Kitt’s signature songs, “I Want to be Evil.” In it, Kitt complains: “Princess and proper, the girl who’s never been kissed / I’m tired of being pure and not chased.” Her response to that is to turn evil, comically speaking, and “bad,” which we learn in “Nothin’ for Christmas,” means to be physically expressive. The reluctance of the women in Kitt’s songs to bet heavily on love rang true in her own life because, as a black woman, her relationships with the white men who courted her faced clear limitations. Kitt wasn’t done with Christmas, though, and 1955’s “Nothin’ for Christmas” was the response to “Santa Baby” that exposed the patriarchy. “This Year’s Santa Baby” isn’t built on that, and taking his Christmas list to the extreme flattened the dynamic. “Santa Baby” raises a litany of questions, beginning with the identity of Santa Claus in the song. “Santa Baby, that Cadillac’s falling apart, won’t start,” Kitt sings in the sort of 1954 sequel. Is the song a way for the woman to ask the man to marry her, something that would have been considered a violation of gender roles at the time? Is the entire elaborate inventory of extravagant desires (a convertible, a yacht, a duplex, etc.) a pretense to finally get to the only one that matters: a ring? As a burlesque, “Santa Baby” creates the impression that it is more outrageous than it is. In 2018, Miley Cyrus set the internet ablaze with what nearly every headline writer called a “feminist” rewrite of Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby.” On The Tonight Show, she explained that she was uncomfortable with the original lyrics of the 1953 Christmas classic, in which Ella Kitt lists all the extravagant gifts she wants. “She wanted to be important enough to be someone’s wife.” In it, she complained about her monotonous life while rich men bought her expensive and elaborate gifts: “I met a pretty funny fool on my way to Istanbul / He bought me the Black Sea for my pool.
