Mumming: The Boxing Day hunt, but not as you know it (BBC News)

The ancient Christmas-time tradition of mumming is marked with dead birds, drama and drinking.

"A lot of our work is in schools and the faces of children when they see the masks and costumes is very special, often there is a spark of fear which quickly turns to delight," programme manager Clare Jennings said. "They all have died away, tradition has fallen a good bit and that's where the good work of the Armagh Rhymers gives it a profile." "If there was enough sandwiches made by the women, and enough drink, it would carry on to a second night. "They gather the money and then they have a dance. "It's a midwinter fertility rite, marked by the death of the hero and the revival, in the depths of midwinter there is hope, the sun will come back in the spring," explained Jim Ledwith from the Mummers Foundation in County Fermanagh. "The wrenboys are a different sort of tradition, they only go out on St Stephen's Day to perform song and music, these are one-day wonders," Jim explained.

Boxing Day shoppers spent record-high of $100 million on sales (Stuff.co.nz)

Shoppers were out in force for the sales, but Black Friday shopping outpaced that of Boxing Day for the second year in a row.

“There were a lot of people hitting the shops yesterday and buying things online. This trend reinforces previous data suggesting that main metro areas are seeing a faster pull-back in spending. It was up 15% in Southland and 13% in Marlborough, while the total regional spend declined by 3.2% in Wellington. Olsen said Boxing Day was not the spending bonanza it once was, with spending on Black Friday a month earlier closer to $150m, and spending in the lead up to Christmas topping $200m on peak spending days. ”In general, spending in Auckland and Wellington looks considerably softer than the national average, with lower spending compared to a year ago in both areas for the three weeks leading up to Christmas. “A number of regional areas, particularly in the South Island, are seeing stronger spending than the national average, with a better summer than last year as international tourism has fired back up and visitor numbers recover.” Worldline NZ chief sales officer Bruce Proffit said Black Friday spending exceeded that of Boxing Day sales, but spending on both days remained below that of the days immediately prior to Christmas. This was the second year in a row that spending on Black Friday outpaced that of Boxing Day sales. The average transaction size in the lead up to Christmas was $56.76, down 2.8% on last year. Annual spending growth on Boxing Day was highest on the West Coast, up 33% on last year. Compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, spending on Boxing Day was up 3.1%. Kiwis rang $100.5 million through tills around the country on Boxing Day – a 2.6% increase on spending recorded during the sales day last year.

Tight-knit coastal town in mourning after Boxing Day death (Stuff.co.nz)

Residents at Waihau Bay on East Cape are grieving the loss of a "well respected community man" who was pulled from the water on Monday night.

“They take pride in keeping an eye on each other and also visitors to the area ... Shortly after midnight a swimmer died in the Hutt River in Kaitoke Regional Park. “So, have a really good look before you jump in. “First and foremost is men behaving badly. “The boat ramp will close at 5pm [Tuesday] and reopen on January 6th. In 2022, half of the drowning fatalities occurred while people were swimming, out on the water in a boat over 4m long and as a result of a fall into the water. “The swimmer was recovered from the water and medical attention was administered, however tragically they were pronounced dead at the scene,” they said. With regard to the water safety, Browne said “everyone should take every possible precaution that you can to be safe in the water and in the event of an accident. In a Facebook post, the club reminded everyone of the rahui and mentioned Kemp as a “well respected community man and life member of the Fishing Club”. Please show respect to the family and the community at this time,” read the post. A close family member said “the family was dealing with the sudden death” and did not want to comment further.
