The night Plymouth Argyle beat Santos and Pele at Home Park (Plymouth Live)

The late Brazilian football great Pele drew 37000 people to Home Park in 1973 but third division Argyle beat the South Americans in a thrilling game.

Charles Nicholls officiated the friendly and was also the linesmen when a Football League representative side beat their Irish League counterparts 12-0 at Home Park in September 1966. But after seeing the size of the crowd at Home Park Santos top brass demanded more cash, refusing to play unless they received an additional £2,500. Pele was on a 13-nation world tour with Santos, in which they played a string of games against English sides including Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and the Pilgrims. The death of Brazilian football great Pele has brought back memories of the time he drew more than 37,000 people to Home Park - but ended up on the losing side.

A couple of years earlier, I was playing local football while Pele was winning his third World Cup! 'He had been kicked and chased his whole life and he just wanted a game of football. he begged not to be kicked, they nearly fought in the tunnel and Santos refused to play over money! I sometimes wonder what he did with my shirt. 'What a gentleman and player. I think it was because I didn't kick him. I'm thinking, "Here comes Pele, close him down", but through my legs it goes and he's past me before I know it. A class act. Before Santos could even reply, Argyle were 3-0 up with first-half goals from Derek Rickard and Jimmy Hinch. 'I had the money, £50 notes in cellophane packets and the chairman started telling the man from Santos: "This is crooked, we will report you. You will never play in this country again." Well, we had no choice — there would have been a riot if we cancelled.'

The night Pele's Santos came to Plymouth Argyle – and got beaten 3-2 (iNews)

The Brazilian great's final match in England went down in local folklore but nearly never took place after a bitter dispute over the match fee.

Unimpressed with the physicality of their lower league opponents, Santos threatened to call off the game a second time – this time at half-time – unless the referee Charles Nicholls was replaced. The antipathy was entirely mutual. “Plenty more countries,” was the response. Plymouth appeared to take the game rather more seriously than the visitors and steamed into a 3-0 lead. Alan Hardaker, the Football League secretary, also made it clear that he would support any move to ban Santos from playing in England again. “Funnily enough, we framed a lot of the memorabilia from that night a few months ago. Santos wouldn’t receive the additional payment until they – including Pele himself – had attended the city’s Holiday Inn for the post-match reception. It came at the end of an exhausting European tour in 1962, when Pele barely had time to sit down for a cuppa. Which was part of the problem. Santos had signed pre-match contracts which guaranteed them a share of the gate receipts from both tour matches. With Home Park full to bursting, they threatened to stay in their dressing room until an extra £2,500 was paid. Pele scored the final goal, a bewitching penalty that left the England goalkeeper Ron Springett red-faced.

The League One leaders have been strongly linked with a permanent transfer for Norwich City left-back Saxon Earley.

We have got to look at if we can afford it. The recruitment team will be working really hard." So I don't want to put a definitive number on it. We have got to look at whether people are available. "I just said to him in front of the group he arrived as a kid and leaves a man. In addition to Waine, the Argyle manager would like three more signings in January. "We just want to make the squad as strong as we can and we have got four-five weeks to try and do that. If Saxon Earley is leaving Stevenage then that's what it is." "We have also got to have a plan in place in case anything happens unexpectedly from us. "But we will see, we will just keep working hard. Schumacher added: "I said we would try and get two done early in the window and that's still the plan." I hope he plays Championship football next season because he has a job to do."
