A Guide to January's Exciting New Movie Releases, From 'M3GAN ... (Collider.com)

A robotic doll gets a mind of her own in M3GAN, a horror film about friendship and what happens when smart technology gets a little too self-aware. Tom Hanks ...

No Time to Die and Crimes of the Future star Léa Seydoux shines in the complicated romance One Fine Morning. This awkward conversation between Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill is going to make you lose your appetite. That’s what Michelle (Emma Roberts) and Allen (Luke Bracey) are asking themselves in Michael Jacobs’ Maybe I Do, and it’s largely because of their parents. A new threat has hit Beacon Hills, and Alpha Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) are determined to take out the latest and deadliest baddie to hit their streets. The film had its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival and is set for a Shudder release later this year. The period piece tells the story of Colton Briggs (Cage), a former gunslinger extraordinaire who has settled down in recent years to become a family man. Panic mounts once Brodie must make an emergency landing on Jolo Islands, a dangerous, war plagued spot in the Philippines. Rather than clean the house and collect the check, they throw an epic house party and charge all the guests a special fee. A Man Called Otto is directed by Stranger Than Fiction and World War Z director Marc Forster and is based on Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove. Let’s take a closer look at what movies will be hitting the big and small screens in January. Produced by Annabelle and Malignant producer James Wan, the sci-fi thriller follows roboticist Gemma’s (Allison Williams) attempt to bring comfort to her recently orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) by gifting her a self-aware, human-like doll known as M3GAN. A Man Called Otto Review : You've Got Heart (Moviehole)

Predictable but anchored with terrific performances, especially from the compelling Bosom Buddy as it's titular character, Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster's ...

A much more intimate, and simply structured tale than most of Tom Hanks’ recent crop of ballot fodder (this fits nicely alongside Hanks’s masses material like Forrest Gump and You’ve Got Mail), the David Magee scripted pic explores the character arc of a sourpuss widow who, after inadvertently becoming part of his new neighbours’ lives, finds meaning in life again. Small the film might feel but Hanks, whose recent turns in Elvis and Greyhound seem to lack something, maybe gusto, is back in formidable form. Otto, an irritable, middle-aged man living in a suburban neighbourhood in Pittsburgh, lives for his rules and routines but ultimately finds greater meaning in his life – placing cleanliness and order second to the needs of new friends, and a discarded cat, when Marisol (Mariana Treviño) and (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) move into the street.

Review: Tom Hanks gives 'A Man Called Otto' an easygoing sincerity (TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press)

The film is made with a level of craft and simple competence that has become shockingly rare. A genuine movie star is allowed to radiate charisma and charm, and ...

The tender message of hopefulness and spiritual renewal is a welcome tonic as the year comes to a close. And in one of the film’s slyer jokes, the hip-hop song “White Boy Summer” by their son Chet Hanks is used to personify a certain kind of clueless obliviousness in others. She barges into Otto’s orderly life and brings a bit of chaos with her, inserting a much-needed liveliness into the movie as well. Directed by Marc Forster, the film is based on the 2012 novel “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman, which became an international bestseller and previously was adapted into a 2016 Swedish film that earned two Oscar nominations. These should be the basic building blocks of Hollywood moviemaking and yet here we are, with “A Man Called Otto” feeling special for being a winsome dramedy with some effective moments of tearjerking tenderness. A genuine movie star is allowed to radiate charisma and charm, and all the performances have character nuance and emotional depth.

10 Movies To Watch If You Loved A Man Called Otto (Collider.com)

Screen legends Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau joined forces for the 1993 comedy Grumpy Old Men. The plot follows two cranky neighbors with a years-long rivalry, ...

The plot centers on Carl Fredricksen, a bitter man who ties thousands of balloons to his house, attempting to take it to the South American wilderness and fulfill a promise to his late wife. Nebraska is a beautiful and heartfelt exploration of the generational divide and the often contentious relationship between absent parents and grown-up sons. Still, the film is a triumphant portrayal of friendship born out of the most unconventional circumstances and provides a brilliant showcase for Cluzet and Sy's considerable talents. The film explores their unexpected bond at a time when she questions her position and finds herself lonely and bored with her usual companions. Powered by Nicholson's tour-de-force performance, the film presents a deeply moving portrayal of a man wanting to find meaning after living a life many, including himself, might find inconsequential. The late Brittany Murphy and a then-nine-year-old Dakota Fanning star in the 2003 comedy Uptown Girls. Uptown Girls might seem conventional and dumb, but there's a surprising brilliance to the film's simplicity. The film stars Omar Sy and François Cluzet and follows the blossoming friendship between a Parisian aristocrat with paraplegia and his live-in caretaker. Based on a true story, The Lady in the Van is a sweet and heartwarming comedy. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is charming to a fault, offering a refreshing take on how someone can and should spend their golden years. The Lady in the Van might be overly sweet at times, but Smith and Jennings' dynamic makes the film worth watching. The second adaptation of the beloved novel A Man Called Ove, the film deals with a retired and grumpy man who forms an unlikely friendship with his neighbors.
