Is It Time to Change Who You Think You Are? (Psychology Today)

I had a personal revelation about a decade ago when I was taking part in a workshop on personal growth. It ran over several days and involved a small group ...

The question above might help you to reflect on something similar in yourself, particularly important at this time of year when many of us begin to think about what is ahead and what we would like to be different in our lives. It was in that moment I realized that what I thought I valued in myself was not what I really valued, at least not anymore; what I really valued were these other qualities of warmth, kindness, and compassion. Imagine, someone you respect was to turn to you, right now, and tell you what it is about you that they admire. For years, I had put my energies into things that I thought valued to me, without taking time to stop and think about what I really valued. I’m not saying that I don’t value those things anymore, but as I had gotten older, I hadn’t fully realized how much I had changed as a person and those things that were of such value to me when I was younger were no longer my top priorities. Until that point, I hadn’t understood that these were more important to me, and from that moment, I was determined to cultivate these qualities in myself and make them my priority in life.

Happy New Rear! Time-Tested Diet And Exercise Tips For Travelers ... (Forbes)

Let's face it, when you travel, usually your diet-and-exercise routine takes a vacation of its own. Here are some of my personal travel fitness trips.

If there’s a wild-mushroom tart on the menu, I’m definitely going to have two bites of it and forego having a piece of bread. I make a point to have a meeting with the Executive Chef, first thing after boarding, and request all kinds of special meals – say, a lowfat ratatouille made with very little oil. Go ahead and order that lobster Thermidor – but you can actually ask that it be made with a minimum of butter and oil. If there’s a Nutella crepe on the menu, you know I am going to fit it into that day’s calorie intake. Breakfast is either a bowl of oatmeal and fruit, or two scrambled eggs (with no butter) and toast and fruit. Have you made a New Year’s resolution to lose some weight and stay in shape?

What to know about the new weight loss drug tirzepatide. Will it be ... (NBC News)

An Eli Lilly drug, if approved for weight loss, is expected to become the best-selling drug of all time, but concerns are mounting about who can afford it.

[The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act](https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1577), which would have allowed the federal government to expand Medicare Part D coverage to include anti-obesity medications. “Patients tell me that it appears to them as if insurance companies want to wait until they get so sick that they have more of a necessity for a medication,” she said. Lofton, of NYU Langone Health, said insurance coverage of anti-obesity drugs may not improve until more people in the medical field change how they view obesity. Patients usually aren’t reimbursed by their insurance plan for the money they’ve already spent on the drugs, she added. Holly Lofton, the director of the weight management program at NYU Langone Health, regularly prescribes the new drugs to her patients but many, she says, are denied coverage by their insurance. Most [ patients in the trial](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35658024/) had a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. [ phase 3 clinical trial](https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lillys-tirzepatide-delivered-225-weight-loss-adults-obesity-or) found a high dose of tirzepatide helped patients lose 22.5% of their body weight on average, or about 52 pounds, better than any medication currently on the market. If the FDA confirms the drug’s effectiveness, a “fair” price for tirzepatide could be around $13,000 annually, or around $1,100 a month, said Dr. The drugs have been shown in clinical trials to be highly effective for weight loss. What’s more, Butsch said, not everyone responds the same way to any given weight loss drug. Experts are confident that the drug, called tirzepatide, will be granted approval by the Food and Drug Administration sometime next year. Kelly Smith, a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, declined to comment on what tirzepatide will cost.

We are at a time of year when booze-induced dread peaks. So I quit ... (The Guardian)

Facing fear and uncertainty without reaching for liquid courage unlocked a new level of confidence in my life.

In that feeling of relief itself (wine won’t cure my husband of disease) and also in undermining my ability to navigate the turmoil that was 2021 while being fully present. But while I knew that reaching for a glass of wine would give the impression of immediate “relief”, I also knew the feeling it promised was deceitful. Not being able to be with my husband while he was in hospital for surgery led to a level of fear I had never known before, that had manifested even as physical pain. Alcohol seems to fit this need with the immediate impact of increasing the body’s production of serotonin and dopamine, the “happy” hormones. I thought the first days of sobriety would be my hardest. I quickly learnt that having a “drink” (soda water with lemon) in hand was enough to stifle unwanted curiosity and avoid empty-hand anxiety.

For, regardless of the culture one lives in — regardless of race, nationality, or religion — no one wants their family and friends subjected to the cruel dictates and methods of authoritarianism or totalitarianism. It turns out that neither a philosophy of “co-existence” nor a narrow focus on our own comfort are enough to ward off the problems of good and evil we thought we’d left behind. When America and American allies fail to condemn, sanction and deter escalating hostilities and atrocities, they compound the harm. Given the post-Cold War mindset and post-Cold War policies, it is by no means certain that democracies in America, Europe and Asia will meet this moment: The moral relativism, economic globalism, isolationist tendencies and identity politics of our time provide excuses for inertia. There is, on the one hand, the worldwide rise of authoritarianism and the routinization of human rights abuses, leading to an epidemic of oppression and suffering. It is true that encompassing indoctrination and relentless intimidation within Russia and China have been alarmingly successful. With both impassioned pleas for liberty and crackdowns on civil society intensifying, free people should show they care about the freedom of others. In backing the Syrian butcher Bashar Assad, and supporting anti-democratic forces across the Middle East, Russia and Iran pushed the region backward.

And on immortal hits like “Heat Wave,” “Dancing in the Street,” and “Nowhere to Run,” Reeves did it — sang pop hits with deep soul, or made soul records that popped like corn — as well as anyone. His happy burble on “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite,” from the latter, and his steely keen on the former’s closer, “Me in Honey,” tell the story as well as the hits do. Brazil's Lula sworn in as president for third time (Euronews)

Lula's predecessor Jair Bolsonaro is believed to have flown in a Brazilian military jet to Florida at the end of December.

He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt. Lula and his supporters have maintained he was railroaded. They chanted Lula's name and belted out the lyrics of a song that informs outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro it is time for him to leave. Lula has made it his mission to heal the divided nation. But a few hours before reports of his departure, he addressed the country as president on his social media. For months, Bolsonaro had sown doubts about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic vote and his loyal supporters were loath to accept the loss.

Brazil's third-time president Lula has new economic problems (Aljazeera.com)

Unlike Lula's first two terms in office, the current economic outlook is gloomy with high inflation and interest rates.

He is also facing growing pressure to de-carbonise Brazil’s growth model and to reassert greater government control over Petrobras, the state-backed energy company. In the latter, PL and its right-wing allies secured 19 of the 27 seats up for grabs. “Lula is arguably the most talented politician of his generation and if anyone can heal the country’s fissures it’s him. In the first-round elections on October 2, the far-right strengthened its hold on the country’s national Congress. He may also try to raise the minimum wage, but that would cost him politically.” PT has also highlighted the need to simplify Brazil’s labyrinthine tax system. The price of Brazil’s key exports (soybeans, oil and iron ore) are all expected to edge down next year. With other resource-rich countries in the region, Brazil’s economy soared. Compared with Lula’s first two terms in office, from 2003-2010, the current economic outlook is gloomy. Some analysts expect Lula to retain parts of Bolsonaro’s policy proposals, such as unifying regional sales duties into one national value-added tax. The tally was close, with Lula clinching victory by just 1.8 percentage points. He was also able to lure moderates by picking a centrist running mate, Geraldo Alckmin.

He called his imprisonment a political witch-hunt, fabricated by the right to keep him from running in 2018. It was there he planned the failed presidential campaign of Haddad, a regular visitor who lost to Bolsonaro in 2018. Lula became a widower when his first wife Mariza died the year before he went to jail. Lula's new-found social awareness was ignited by reading books on race, slavery and hunger behind bars, as well as biographies of Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela, according to his website. The more ideological Lula who emerged from jail in 2019 should not be a cause for concern, friends and allies said. "He went to prison strong and came out stronger."

He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt. Bolsonaro finally condemned the bomb plot in a December 30 farewell address on social media, hours before flying to the US. Pavão stressed that Bolsonaro, who mostly vanished from the political scene since he lost his reelection bid, was slow to disavow recent incidents. “I wish I were here when Bolsonaro’s plane took off, that is the only thing that makes me almost as happy as tomorrow’s event,” Coutinho, 28, said after singing Lula campaign jingles on the plane. Lula has made it his mission to heal the divided nation. For months, Bolsonaro had sown doubts about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic vote and his loyal supporters were loath to accept the loss. And with tensions running hot, a series of events has prompted fear that violence could erupt on inauguration day. The next day, police found explosive devices and several bulletproof vests in a forested area on the federal district’s outskirts. Party officials were jailed, including Lula — until his convictions were annulled on procedural grounds. He left office with a personal approval rating of 83 per cent. She decided to attend after seeing pictures of Lula’s first inauguration. Many Brazilians travelled abroad for the first time.
