Tennis: Venus Williams fairy tale ends at ASB Classic with loss to ... (New Zealand Herald)

Williams was looking to reach a WTA quarter-final for the first time since August 2019.

Zhu saved a break point in the next game, then Williams held before rain intervened, with the players leaving the court at 1:10pm. From there, Williams took the initiative. The flashpoint came in the next game, as the 28-year-old Chinese showed real tenacity with a vital hold – fending off four break points – which heaped pressure back on Williams, who was unable to hold to force a tiebreak. Serving for the match at 5-4, she slipped to 0-40, with Zhu then converting her second break point. Her confidence was demonstrated with a precise winner to defend a break point, before a big second serve wrapped up the first set. Williams had a chance to serve for the match, up 5-4 with a break in the final set, but world No 84 Zhu showed more composure over the latter stages, reeling off three successive games.

ASB Classic loses Venus Williams after veteran's late wobble (RNZ)

Another big name is out of the ASB Classic after Venus Williams suffered a second round defeat to China's Lin Zhu.

However, the rain only held off long enough for the seven-time Grand Slam champion to win the first set and Zhu to fight back and take a 4-2 lead in the second. Wet weather forced several first round matches indoors on Wednesday but a break in the weather arrived on Thursday, allowing Williams and Zhu onto centre court just after midday. The American veteran was beaten 3-6 6-2 7-5 in a match moved indoors midway through the second set when the Auckland rain returned on Thursday.

The 42-year-old former Wimbledon champion served for the match but couldn't close it out against Zhu Lin under the roof.

“Walking out, we really didn’t know what court we were going to play on, whether it was going to be indoors or outdoors. I was the first one out there and seeing what happens. Not ideal either.” But as the conditions dried out on Centre Court, the decision was made to move it outside, so spectators could watch it. It was tennis, but it was more about surviving, instead of playing great. It’s definitely not easy playing two different matches though, that’s for sure.

Emma Raducanu in injury scare ahead of Australian Open (Associated Press)

Williams broke first for 2-1 in the third set and extended that advantage to 5-3. She played only four matches in 2022 and was hoping to progress to the second round of a tournament for the first time since 2019. I’ve played a lot of matches in my life and I’ve played through some intense delays but it was definitely like two separate matches. Zhu held serve for 5-2 then broke Williams again to level the match. The British player slipped late in the second set and then summoned the trainer who heavily strapped her left ankle during a lengthy injury break. So to be honest it’s not a surprise that this happens to someone.

Veteran Venus Williams led 5-3 in the final set before going down to Zhu Lin of China in Auckland.

Kenin had beaten Gauff when she won the Australian Open in 2020 but a lot has changed since then and Gauff, in her first WTA event as the No 1 seed, ran out a comfortable winner. The American then had four chances to break herself at 5-5 but couldn’t take them and was then broken again as Zhu set up a clash with another American, top seed [6-4, 6-4](https://www.tennismajors.com/matches/wta/asb-classic/coco-gauff-vs-sofia-kenin) to take her place in the last eight.
