Champion horse breeder Sir Patrick Hogan dies, aged 83 (RNZ)

Sir Patrick Hogan, of the world famous Cambridge Stud, has died. The 83-year-old was considered one of the world's finest horse breeders and studmasters.

Sir Patrick was a very competitive man and approached horse trading as a big-talking marketer. Sir Tristram didn't amount to much on the racetrack, but he sired a record number of winners. The enterprise was struck with misfortune when five of the horses died in a year.

Hogan as been widely hailed as the most influential personality in New Zealand racing for four decades.

The family also had a beachfront luxury holiday home at Mount Maunganui, a property dubbed Sir Tristram Place. “I consider myself a New Zealander, and a great admirer of the Queen,’’ he told The Press at the time. The Hogans turned down a $22 million offer for Zabeel, just as they had for Sir Tristram. Sir Patrick was a true icon of our industry and his legacy will last forever.— New Zealand Bloodstock (@KarakaChat) “She has been to Cambridge Stud [in 1990] and I would have considered it churlish to refuse such an honour for any reason. New Zealand Bloodstock and the entire thoroughbred industry mourn the loss of legendary breeder Sir Patrick Hogan. He built a 1830sqm colonial-style building with a high-pitched roof as his stud base while he and Justine and their daughters Nicola and Erin, lived in a sharemilker’s house with a corrugated iron roof. His insight and humour was obvious to us in those informal chats and we enjoyed the time we spent together. Sir Tristram also sported a singed coat after surviving a fire in Ireland, escaping only when a mare kicked a stable door out. After some success, he bought another breeding sire and renamed his property Fencourt Stud. A world-renowned breeder, leading owner, harrier of politicians, Hogan is the main man responsible for the huge tax break which is revolutionising racing.’’ He was knighted in 2000.

The trainer and breeder shaped the thoroughbred racing industry in New Zealand.

“Patrick was a remarkable man and very generous. That was his attitude, his ethos, for decades and decades. But his relentless success wasn’t just born of the deeds of those two great horses. One of the biggest names in the New Zealand thoroughbred racing and breeding industry, New Zealand Bloodstock supremo Sir Peter Vela remembers Hogan was one of the first people to guide him when he entered racing. Hogan was famous worldwide in the racing industry for the exploits of Cambridge Stud, the racing and breeding operation he started which shaped the thoroughbred racing industry in New Zealand and Australia. “He always wanted things done the right way and even though he was always up early if he had to stay up late to make sure things were done the right way, then he did that.

The legacy founded by Sir Tristram has continued to the present day, as witnessed by the number of class performers with his blood in their veins and now headed by his grandson Savabeel, New Zealand’s dominant sire of the past decade. “His name and persona was, and always will be, synonymous with the New Zealand thoroughbred breeding industry and his massive contribution to putting this country on the world stage.” “This country was so fortunate to have someone like him; he was a great horseman, his knowledge, what stallions to develop and how to grow the industry, so from every point of view his passing is just so sad. His dedication to the industry, his marketing skills, his flare and his professional fairness put the New Zealand industry and the national sales on the map internationally.” “For me personally and for so many other people who were mentored by Patrick it’s a very sad day,” said Marcus Corban, whose association with Hogan spanned four decades in a career that grew to becoming Cambridge Stud general manager. In a masterstroke that was to reap huge accolades and rewards for Cambridge Stud, Hogan selected Sir Tristram as his foundation stallion.
