Coachella Makes History With Its 2023 Headliners (W Magazine)

Frank Ocean, Blackpink and Bad Bunny will all take to the main stage of North America's largest music festival.

The Puerto Rican superstar’s 2022 tour was also the year’s top grosser; though this is only his second Coachella performance (the first being in 2019), the set is sure to draw a massive crowd. Now they’ll be hitting the stage with their second album, Born Pink. The three main headliners for the massive festival in Indio, California are Frank Ocean, Blackpink and Bad Bunny — with the latter two representing the first K-pop act and the first artist from Latin America to headline the festival, respectively.

Bad Bunny will be the first Latin artist and Blackpink the first all-female group to headline North America's largest music festival.

He was replaced by Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, who [dropped out](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/apr/04/kanye-west-coachella-pulls-out-reports-show-cancelled) a week before the festival following weeks of erratic behavior and public turmoil, including harassment of his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. The 35-year-old American singer was originally set to headline the 2020 festival, which Covid delayed several times, before rescheduling to 2023. The band became the first Korean all-female group to play the festival in 2019.

[Still no word on that album, though!](https://www.vulture.com/article/best-new-music-albums-releases.html) Bad Bunny had been a top pick to headline, after [a world-dominating tour](https://www.vulture.com/2022/08/bad-bunny-yankee-stadium-photos-bronx.html) around [his world-dominating 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti](https://www.vulture.com/2022/05/bad-bunny-un-verano-sin-ti-album-review.html). And the stanning doesn’t stop up top. And Blackpink’s billing represents the meteoric rise of K-pop in the U.S., after just four years ago, they became [the first K-pop girl group to play an American festival](https://www.vulture.com/2019/04/coachella-2019-blackpink-set-was-historic-moment-for-k-pop.html). Idris Elba, because why not!) In keeping with the diversity up top, the lineup also includes Afrobeats ascendant Burna Boy and a slew of Latinx and Spanish performers, including Rosalía, Becky G, and Kali Uchis. It’s not all for millennials and Gen Z, either, with Blondie and the Breeders representing the classics on the lineup. And Calvin Harris is “returning to the desert,” meaning he didn’t nab a headlining spot despite previously topping the bill. Coachella is going global.

Coachella 2023: Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK and Frank Ocean to ... (We Rave You)

The Coachella 2023 lineup has officially released and is filled with huge names of every genre including headliners: Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK and Frank Ocean.

Coachella put together one of the best electronic lineups in quite some time. And lastly, Frank Ocean will finally make his return to close out Coachella 2023 after the Covid-19 pandemic caused his appearance to be rescheduled to 2023. Following him to close day two will be one of the most popular K-Pop groups currently in the industry, with BLACKPINK earning the assignment. That notion continues to be the case as arguably the biggest brand in the festival world has provided us with one of the most impressive lineups in recent memory for Coachella 2023. The three headliners for Coachella 2023 will be the world-famous Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, who will close out day one of the festival. With the biggest names being the three headliners to close out each day, Coachella will be making history while at the same time providing festivalgoers with an incredibly diverse range of options to see.

5 Takeaways from the Coachella 2023 Lineup (Pitchfork)

The music festival season kicks off with a poster featuring Frank Ocean, a welcomed international bent, and most surprisingly, the elusive Jai Paul.

album charts](https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/bad-bunny-un-verano-sin-ti-top-billboard-200-album-year-charts-2022-1235176756/), and [BLACKPINK](https://pitchfork.com/artists/blackpink/), the leading [currently active](https://pitchfork.com/news/bts-members-to-join-south-korean-military-for-mandatory-service/) lights of the ongoing international phenomenon that is K-pop, at the top of the bill feels significant. Then again, [Ocean’s 2012 Coachella performance](https://pitchfork.com/news/46139-watch-frank-oceans-entire-coachella-set/) loomed large in his early rise—for years, that red-and-white headband seemed to be in every news photo—so here’s hoping he’s got something very special planned for 2023. As far as evidence that Ocean might have a new project in the works, three years after his [last loosies](https://pitchfork.com/news/frank-ocean-releases-new-songs-dear-april-and-cayendo/), it isn’t much—but it’s something. Next, in a highly unusual move, Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett announced [way back in August 2021](https://pitchfork.com/news/frank-ocean-to-headline-coachella-2023-festival-co-founder-says/) that Ocean would be headlining in 2023. [Frank Ocean](https://pitchfork.com/artists/29508-frank-ocean/) on it in big letters. [Bonnaroo](https://pitchfork.com/news/kendrick-lamar-to-headline-bonnaroo-2023/) and a few others this year, but the [unveiling](https://pitchfork.com/news/coachella-2023-full-lineup-announced/) of its bill— [headlined](https://pitchfork.com/news/coachella-2023-headliners-bad-bunny-blackpink-frank-ocean/) by Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean—feels like the unofficial start of music festival season.
