She also is the first to receive an acting nomination and a Globe for Marvel in the category. "Babylon" nabbed the Golden Globe for best original score in a motion picture. [Jerrod Carmichael](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/06/awards-insider-jerrod-carmichael-rothaniel-little-gold-men) brought back the Golden Globes with a vengeance. [a guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3zW-OB7mk) last week, Carmichael said he “was very, very excited” to host the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards. Thankfully, instead of “Changin’ it up,” NBC ultimately went with a version of the Carmichael-approved tagline: “An evening of joy and devastation.” And Carmichael leaned into that devastation with his frank read of the HFPA in his opening monologue, calling out the HFPA for its complete lack of Black members until very recently. “I’m unfireable.” “That’s a Black man talking for you.” ‘We have no ideas, and we need it done tomorrow by five.’” He went on to describe NBC’s original plan for promoting his Golden Globes hosting stint which included a smiling photo of Carmichael from The short version, as he said: “I’m here ’cause I’m Black.” He detailed his apprehension about taking the gig to the audience, sitting on the lip of the stage and recalling how he was sitting at home making tea when he got the call from Stephen Hill to host the Golden Globes. “They’re both lazy and pushy, which is a hell of a combo. Carmichael has an extended history with NBC marketing, given that his short-lived sitcom, The Carmichael Show, ran for three seasons on the network from 2015 to 2017. Carmichael took his time with the opening monologue, beginning his speech by instructing the audience to “be a little quiet here” before launching into an extended explanation as to how he got onto the stage.

Always a red carpet favourite, Billy Porter can be counted on to bring the glamour. Putting the couture in cute suit, Redmayne is perfection with this chocolate number and giant rosette. Wrapped in swathes of blood red silk, Lily James has made an entrance for the ages in this extravagant look. Supermodel Heidi Klum goes from one extreme to the other - from her Halloween worm costume, to today’s look: a Cabaret-esque sparkling mini dress with feather details. The annual celebration of film and TV is hosting its 80th anniversary ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California today - certainly an improvement on last year’s event, which saw the show reduced to a streamed offering without a host or a red carpet. White Lotus actress Jennifer Cooldige and writer Mike White serve up some of the best acceptance speeches of the night.
The 80th annual ceremony saw a diverse slate of winners as host Jerrod Carmichael took shots at its troubled history.
“This is also for all the shoulders that I stand on, all who came before me, who look like me, and all who are going on this journey with me forward,” said Michelle Yeoh, winning best actress in a musical or comedy for her first leading role on a call sheet in a decades-long career. Jennifer Coolidge barreled through it twice, as a presenter and as an emotional winner for her supporting role in the second season of The White Lotus. Ryan Murphy, accepting the Carol Burnett lifetime achievement award, used much of his speech time to celebrate the achievements of queer actors such as Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Jeremy Pope and Matt Bomer as a “point of hope and progress” for LGBTQ+ viewers watching at home. Carmichael joked – or didn’t, as his delivery throughout the night skewed understated, direct and unfazed – that he was “un-fireable” as the first Black host in the show’s 80-year history. Carmichael didn’t ease up, drawing some awkward gasps later in the evening with a dig at Tom Cruise while introducing his Top Gun: Maverick costars Glenn Powell and Jay Ellis: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned … But Carmichael, a standup comic from North Carolina, [stated the Globes’ situation plainly](https://twitter.com/THR/status/1612985568681668609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1612985568681668609%7Ctwgr%5E89d3c4519bf71bcd14f8f02441e98ea4286868b6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Ffilm%2Flive%2F2023%2Fjan%2F10%2Fgolden-globes-2023-winners-losers-nominees-latest-live): “I’m only being asked to host this, I know, because I’m Black.”

[Golden Globes 2023](https://www.vanityfair.com/live/golden-globes-2023-live-updates) wasted no time in addressing the [series of controversies](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/01/golden-globes-2023-how-to-watch-and-what-to-know-about-the-controversy-awards-insider) that led to the show’s removal from NBC last year and a complete overhaul of the voting body that determines the awards. But, as Murphy said, “The show did go on.” And in his acceptance speech for the Carol Burnett Award, Ryan Murphy obliquely acknowledged last year’s untelevised ceremony when paying tribute to Pose star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. Even when thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association directly, none of the winners acknowledged the upheaval within the group from onstage. Then again, he also seemed aware of his power: “They haven’t had a Black host in 79 years, they’re going to fire the first one? [a Los Angeles Times report revealed](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/02/golden-globes-scandal-how-the-ceremony-faced-its-lack-of-a-single-black-voter) that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the Golden Globes, had zero Black members.
Colin Farrell, Michelle Yeoh and Steven Spielberg were among the big winners at the Golden Globes, making a comeback this year on the awards scene.
"Animation is not a genre for kids, it is a medium." "I'm happier to be with you in person, we're back. "With this historic Black Panther series, it is part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to. "I put a lot of things in my way with this story," he said. He spoke to some stars directly from the stage, telling Rihanna to ignore pressure from fans and take her time with recording her long-awaited next album. I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight," he said. then along came the best gift - Everything Everywhere All at Once." You were an icon and a rebel." Accepting her award for best actress in a musical or comedy film, Yeoh said: "I turned 60 last year. He joked he would "try not to leave it another 14 years" before working with the same team again. I'm not saying I even got there but the aspiration kept me going." In a spirited speech, Farrell said: "Martin McDonagh, I owe you so much.

A handful of award winners weren’t able to make the ceremony, including Cate Blanchett (best actress in a drama motion picture), Zendaya (best actress in a drama television series), Amanda Seyfried (best actress in a limited series) and Kevin Costner (best actor in a drama series). “Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl,” he said. Brad Pitt, nominated for his supporting role in the film “Babylon,” was seated right up front, prompting several shout-outs throughout the night. “During a very tough time in this country, I’m happy that ‘Abbott Elementary’ is able to make so many people laugh,” she added. Murphy thanked those who helped him throughout his 45 years in show business and offered “up and coming dreamers and artists” the definitive blueprint to achieve “success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind”: “It’s very simple … [announced](https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2023/01/10/golden-globes-returns-jerrod-carmichael/?itid=lk_inline_manual_30), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared during the show to thank “the free people of the free world” for their continued support during Russia’s war on Ukraine. Slap-fatigue was a theme of the evening, but there was special dispensation for Murphy to take a pop at the leading player of last year’s Oscar ceremony. Yeoh, Farrell and many others demanded she cool her fingers; the most compelling case was made by Austin Butler, whose moving tribute to his late mother was accompanied by an increase in volume from Flower. Introducing the Top Gun: Maverick star, Carmichael drew awkward gasps and a few whoops with his mention of the main difficulty with Hollywood’s fulsome embrace of its most powerful star.
After years of controversy, the Golden Globes are back on NBC. Keep track of all the big winners right here.
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture While several clear favorites have emerged this awards season—Everything Everywhere All At Once, Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, and Tar among them from the film sphere, and the likes of The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Better Call Saul from the TV set—the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a famously unpredictable bunch.
For the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, the HFPA left self-importance to the less embattled awards shows and leaned into farce.
Flower was clearly instructed to play off some speakers — it was weird for the Hollywood Foreign Press to interrupt the makers of the best-international-film winner, Argentina, 1985 — but on several occasions, the producers of the broadcast just let people fly as long as they wanted. It was just people coming out to present awards and people receiving those awards and giving speeches. [brings us to Tuesday night](https://www.vulture.com/article/golden-globes-2023-highs-lows-whoas.html), a weird night for an awards show and the NBC return of the ceremony. It was as if this telecast, hosted by a truth-telling Jerrod Carmichael and, unofficially [for a couple of stretches](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/jennifer-coolidge-full-golden-globes-acceptance-speech.html), Jennifer Coolidge, took an edible at the beginning of the evening and got a teensy bit higher as the minutes passed. In keeping with how the Globes has typically operated, there were no video tributes to the year in film and television or musical performances. The producers of the 2023 Globes gave attendees the tools they needed to make themselves and the show feel loose — free alcohol, allegedly scant amounts of food, and an international platform — then basically let an awards show be an awards show. But for many years, the industry acted as if it was important: The Globes marked the start of awards season, provided a hint at what might happen at the Academy Awards, and shined a spotlight on films and TV shows that mainstream audiences might have missed. And that, my friends, is the Golden Globes in a nutshell. And White openly wept at everything she said while producers shoved a camera into his face so the world could watch him sob in 4K HD. Several incidents could be cited as the ultimate encapsulation of the evening’s anything-goes vibe: Carmichael [asking if he could trade](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/golden-globes-2023-tom-cruise-shelly-miscavige-scientology.html) the three Golden Globes Tom Cruise returned to the HFPA for disappeared Scientologist wife [Shelly Miscavige](https://www.vulture.com/2016/05/ron-miscavige-scientology-book-ruthless.html), Quentin Tarantino pronouncing the Best Picture nominees as though he were really angry with cinema and it knew why, Michelle Yeoh joking that she would beat up pianist Chloe Flower if she played over her speech … Coolidge shouted out The White Lotus’s creator, Mike White, for casting her in the series, which has, in turn, convinced her neighbors to talk to her. Talent pulled out of attending the 2022 ceremony, NBC opted not to broadcast the show, and while Golden Globes were still technically awarded, no one really paid attention.

“It was unique, it was special, it was God-blessed, it was all the years of hanging in there and believing in myself, in my talent, and praying for the industry to open its doors for me to be able to step out into the light. It’s my very first time being here, and I’m very thankful that it would be this year, a year when the HFPA would open up its heart and its minds to an understanding that diversity actually works and giving all people, no matter what color, shade, shape, gender, or size, [seeing] they all have something to add to this industry. The fact that it went ahead at all was controversial, given the criticism the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—the organization that votes on the awards—has faced over the last two years, for alleged self-dealing and a lack of diversity among its members.

Butler, who will next be seen in Dune 2, ended his speech by thanking his family, including his sister who was at the show. He made sure to also thank the Presley family for “opening [their] hearts” to him. His last thank-you went out to Jenny the donkey, the breakout star of the dark comedy. Farrell’s fellow nominees included Babylon’s Diego Calva, Glass Onion’s Daniel Craig, White Noise’s Adam Driver, and The Menu’s Ralph Fiennes, but Farrell has been out front much of the season due to the critical acclaim of his work in Banshees. In Banshees, the actor stars as Pádraic Súilleabháin, an Irish man whose sweet existence is upended when his longtime best friend stops speaking to him. The charming star made sure to thank his director, Martin McDonagh, whom he first worked with on 2008’s In Bruges.

It is Todd Field’s first film in 16 years (a Terrence Malick-sized absence after 2006’s Little Children) and doubtlessly one of the best films you’ll get to see this year. It got the first award of the evening, with Ke Huy Quan winning Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. But trouble is looming… She wasn’t there to accept the award as she is reportedly filming in the UK, but she remains Michelle Yeoh’s stiffest competition at the upcoming Academy Awards.
