The 80th annual ceremony saw a diverse slate of winners as host Jerrod Carmichael took shots at its troubled history.

“This is also for all the shoulders that I stand on, all who came before me, who look like me, and all who are going on this journey with me forward,” said Michelle Yeoh, winning best actress in a musical or comedy for her first leading role on a call sheet in a decades-long career. Jennifer Coolidge barreled through it twice, as a presenter and as an emotional winner for her supporting role in the second season of The White Lotus. Ryan Murphy, accepting the Carol Burnett lifetime achievement award, used much of his speech time to celebrate the achievements of queer actors such as Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Jeremy Pope and Matt Bomer as a “point of hope and progress” for LGBTQ+ viewers watching at home. Carmichael joked – or didn’t, as his delivery throughout the night skewed understated, direct and unfazed – that he was “un-fireable” as the first Black host in the show’s 80-year history. In keeping with how the Globes has typically operated, there were no video tributes to the year in film and television or musical performances. The producers of the 2023 Globes gave attendees the tools they needed to make themselves and the show feel loose — free alcohol, allegedly scant amounts of food, and an international platform — then basically let an awards show be an awards show. But for many years, the industry acted as if it was important: The Globes marked the start of awards season, provided a hint at what might happen at the Academy Awards, and shined a spotlight on films and TV shows that mainstream audiences might have missed. And that, my friends, is the Golden Globes in a nutshell. And White openly wept at everything she said while producers shoved a camera into his face so the world could watch him sob in 4K HD.
