A Streaming Guide to Watching Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans (ELLE.com)

A semi-autobiographical tale from a master filmmaker could easily ooze self-indulgence, but Steven Spielberg's latest, The Fabelmans, is never intemperate.

In the meantime, you can always turn on Peacock for a re-watch of - Rent or purchase to stream on The resulting film is a beautiful homage to cinema, but more than that it’s a genuinely moving story of resilience, empathy, and storytelling as healing. As Sammy, young actor Gabriel LaBelle is an uncanny match for Spielberg, full of gentle charisma and ambitions so earnest they’re almost painful to witness. We see Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and Burt (Paul Dano) through his eyes, sometimes literally, as they share with him their divergent perspectives: Burt is warm but pragmatic, while Mitzi—a dreamer—is luminous but elusive. In fact, it’s purposefully sparing as the camera zooms in on Spielberg stand-in Sammy Fabelman’s coming-of-age journey, an enchanted childhood complicated by his mother and father’s marital strife.

“The Fabelmans” ends with a chance meeting between Sam and a legendary director that is too deliriously funny to even consider spoiling. With “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg has the opportunity to print the legend, to soften and beautify painful experiences through the power of cinema. Mitzi is able to pick up on the fact that her son is attempting to overcome the fear, and lends him a movie camera to film the crash. One of the tools that “The Fabelmans” has to help widen its scope beyond Steven Spielberg are the rich and holistic performances from Williams and Dano. In the mirror, Sam sees himself with his 8mm camera circling his family, finding the best angles to capture the drama. It’s an emotionally powerful movie, a fact that led to it winning the Best Picture-Drama and Best Director awards at the 80th Golden Globes and garnered a further three nomination.

Film review: The Fabelmans and A Man Called Otto - Law Society ... (Law Society Journal)

In the tail end of his career, Steven Spielberg finally goes deeply personal with The Fabelmans, and in A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks' miscast is the least ...

It’s not the lack of subtlety that bothers me here, but that the symbolism is unsubtle to the point of being offensive. Most egregiously, the film succumbs to a couple of corny needle drops that cheapen some of its bigger dramatic turns. Definitely not for the fans of the original book. Marc Forster, who directed the film from a script by his usual collaborator David Magee, is the kind of competent director with successful film making well studied. Part of the shiny city up on the hills was built on the concepts that he and his colleague filmmakers from the 80s developed. A Man Called Otto is a sapfest of worn sentimentality that never feels genuine. It’s the realisation that the American Dream is a Hollywood fabrication. Spielberg still finds time and place in the film to explore some of his insecurities. Amadeus is great because of that thumping realisation that genius exists in the world, and we just have to live with that. There are also moments with visual cues that directly reference some of his films – for example, a shot taken from the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Is self-reflection the responsibility of an artist? And another that could’ve been from Empire of the Sun.

That’s likely because The Fabelmans is a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars, and Universal is hoping to get the most out of the box office. In his weekly column, Shawn Sullivan offers his take on Steven Spielberg's latest film, "The Fabelmans."

All of his career, Spielberg often blended escapism and wild fiction to explore his own painful memories and the themes that recurred in his youth. But I do not believe Spielberg wanted to make a film to celebrate the lore of his career or help lock down his place in film history. A scene involving a train wreck seems to rattle and fascinate him at the same time, enough so that he needs to work through the anxiety he’s experiencing as a result of witnessing the spectacle. These awards do not mean anything to anybody who is not a part of the film industry. I consider it Spielberg’s best film in several years and his most emotionally engaging one since “Saving Private Ryan.” “The Fabelmans” won Best Drama Motion Picture, and Spielberg took the Best Director award.

'The Fabelmans' Star Paul Dano On Playing Steven Spielberg's Father (Deadline)

'The Fabelmans' star Paul Dano details the emotional journey he took to portray a fictional version Of Steven Spielberg's father.

And it’s incredible that so many people do it, and I certainly feel fortunate that I’m getting to do it now in a way that I want to and that I feel really good about. And then you made me believe again in a very different context.’ And speaking of Sammy and what The Fabelmans is about, it was seeing actors who could take you somewhere that felt like a character, a world, and a life. So, the example of going from The Batman to The Fabelmans is just that I feel so lucky that I would get to do something so different. I also love when I can believe in the final product because I don’t just do this for me; I need to believe in what we’re all making as well. I remember going to audition after audition and what it felt like to get or not get a part. It’s really fun in a way to have all of that run through you [as an actor] as well, meaning I was letting Arnold into my life but letting Burt lead the way. I always saw this wonderful parallel there, which said so much about Arnold with the way his brain worked through engineering and electronics, much in the way that I think Steven works through movies. And I think it’s some combination of not being able to see or acknowledge or face the truth while also knowing and trying to contain it for the sake of his family. In terms of what I saw in his eyes, his father had passed about eight months before we first spoke, and it was hard for me to process that in real-time. And it certainly wasn’t, but I think he was doing that for the sake of his family, and I think he did that because he still loved Mitzi. But once he told me about the idea, I felt very strongly about the project in terms of how I might meet the material, what I might have to offer, and how it resonates with me. Here, Dano reveals his deep research and close work with the director to capture the true essence of a life well-lived.
