Motorist says if she hadn't slammed on the brakes the pedestrian could have been killed.

“The contractors continue to take precautions to ensure it is obvious that the crossing is not ready or operating. This includes safety precautions such as barrier arm fencing across the pedestrian entrance to the crossing. As of the end of October 2022, LGWM had spent $2.4 million on the crossing. They have advocated for an overbridge instead, which has been estimated to cost between $10 million and $17m. The crossing is designed to provide safe walking and cycling access across Cobham Drive, which is right next to the waterfront on the way to the airport. A local motorist, who has lived in the eastern suburbs for 40 years, was driving to work in the city yesterday morning when she had to slam on the brakes at the crossing on Cobham Drive.

In fact, we’ve got a couple of consultants in at the moment working night and day to solve the problem.” “Look, we’re listening, and yes, we have paid way too much on consultants in the past and we’re looking to greatly reduce it moving forward. Is the whole consultants’ thing getting a bit out of hand at LGWM? "Each contract has to go to competitive tender, so we have to send all the paperwork out, then we have to read them all. Wood was unable to comment on this matter as he was delayed at an understaffed police station giving witness information about the bus brawl. Then, once we find the successful tenders, we have to meet with them to go through the paperwork – we’re so busy hiring consultants at the moment, there’s not really any time to do much else.” “No-one’s going to use the blimmin’ crossing.” Many residents would prefer a pedestrian overpass or even an underpass, to avoid stopping traffic, but LGWM consultants don’t believe either would be affordable. But surely if hardly any pedestrians use the new crossing, then it won’t disrupt traffic? “You might think that designing and constructing a park bench is simple,” says Ms Dawdle, “but you can’t construct these things and plonk them down just anywhere. You must go through a very rigorous and expensive engagement process and then plonk them down just anywhere.” “It’s outrageous,” says Waka Kotahi engineer Kingston Bridgeport-Flyer, “we could have had two Transmission Gully opening ceremonies for that money, 15 metres of motorway, or three-quarters of a bus shelter.”

Pedestrian safety requires ongoing vigilance (UKNow)

Two recent pedestrian-involved collisions on campus emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant when driving or walking on area streets.

While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. The University of Kentucky Police Department, in partnership with UK Transportation Services and other campus partners, is monitoring areas with high pedestrian traffic and more frequent vehicle accidents to better understand potential risks. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $501 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. - Before making a turn, look in all directions for pedestrians or bicyclists that may be in your path and be aware of potential blind spots.

[complete streets](/definition/complete-streets) ordinance, see another [article written by Azaillon in December](https://www.wcpo.com/news/government/local-politics/cincinnati-city-council-passes-complete-streets-ordinance). What will the future hold for cycling and bike infrastructure? Zoning codes are not the only kind of land use control that has built the U.S. The council acted to implement the new safety crew after a string of pedestrian crashes near the University of Cincinnati. [article at the time by Anna Azallion for WCPO](https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/cincinnati-city-council-passes-ordinance-to-create-in-house-pedestrian-safety-crew). “Many of the most-effective pedestrian-focused projects, McVay explains, don't actually require specialized knowledge to install, because they rely on simple, easy-to-work-with materials like bolted-down plastic dividers to prevent drivers form drifting over center-lines, or high-visibility paint to make crosswalks easier for motorists to see at night,” for example.
