That is good, that is fantastic, and we should be proud of that as a country.” While that makes him well-equipped to carry Labour’s last sets of reforms through this term, his larger battle will be on the campaign trail. “There has been an escalation in vitriol, and I want to acknowledge that some politicians have been the subject of that more than others,” he said. He also spoke on some of the challenges Ardern had faced including threats and abuse, particularly in relation to the Covid pandemic. “The weight of that responsibility is still sinking in.” The caucus is due to formally endorse his selection on Sunday.

Chris Hipkins: From Head Boy to Prime Minister (RNZ)

Chris "Chippy" Hipkins is set to become New Zealand's Prime Minister, following an announcement from the Labour Party this morning.

In June 2022, Hipkins was moved from being Covid-19 Response Minister and picked up the Police Minister portfolio from Poto Williams. In September 2022, Hipkins issued an apology in the House to former Finance minister Bill English for suggesting he had granted family members government contracts. He held the conference in a nature reserve in Raumati. However, following legal action taken by Bellis, Hipkins apologised for releasing personal information and making inaccurate statements. Hipkins received his Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in politics and criminology from Victoria University of Wellington. He also held the State Services and Associate Education spokesperson roles.

Two policies that were more popular than unpopular were KiwiBuild and the plan to build Auckland light rail. The poll took in 1000 respondents over Thursday and Friday. Forty-three per cent of voters want KiwiBuild kept, compared to just 28 per cent who want it gone. The poll also asked about some Labour policies that a new leader might ditch. “I expect them to deliver a result. ”We found out this week that even a day can be extraordinarily long and many things can change. The two are usually held by the same person, but Ardern has had Kelvin Davis as her deputy leader and Grant Robertson as deputy Prime Minister. ”Once New Zealanders get to know Chris as a person and not just a politician, they will see what we see. Parliament is not set to return until February 14. I’m sure he would have had a chuckle at some point or a ‘goodness gracious me, what’s just gone on.’ But he knows just how politics is and how things can operate.” ”I’m really proud of him. It is not yet clear exactly when that will happen.

He's set to replace Jacinda Ardern as the new leader of the country, but what do we know about Chris Hipkins?

In June 2022, Hipkins was moved from being Covid-19 response minister and picked up the police minister portfolio from Poto Williams. In September 2022, Hipkins issued an apology in the House to former finance minister Bill English for suggesting he had granted family members government contracts. "I think we will have a good, constructive discussion, we will select a new leader that the party will then unite behind. He held the conference in a nature reserve in Raumati. However, following legal action taken by Bellis, Hipkins apologised for releasing personal information and making inaccurate statements. He also held the state services and associate education spokesperson roles. But, in June last year, Hipkins was removed as Covid-19 minister and replaced Poto Williams in the police portfolio. After completing his study, Hipkins worked in the industry training sector. He completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in politics and criminology at Victoria University. He was appointed Labour spokesperson for Internal Affairs and became the Chief Whip following the 2011 general election. He has not apologised for the accusations, nor has he corrected the reports that these women were "gang-related sex workers". He has been the MP for Remutaka since the 2008 election.

Chris Hipkins: 'I don't intend to lose in 2023' (Newsroom)

Police Minister and Remutaka MP Chris Hipkins has been confirmed as the Labour Party's sole nominee to replace Jacinda Ardern as prime minister, which he says ...

“Chris Hipkins needs to start by dumping the fantasy policies that Labour has pushed: the media merger, divisive Three Waters reforms, so-called Fair Pay Agreements, income insurance that is really a jobs tax, and all of the wasteful spending that is driving inflation. He is extremely competent, with a track record of delivering for New Zealand as one of our most senior ministers over the past six years. They want a government that is focused on crime, rising inflation, removing restrictions on businesses and allowing workers, and stopping the erosion of democratic rights.” Earlier on Saturday in a statement, Labour whip Duncan Webb said Hipkins was the only nomination to become party leader. Reader donations are critical to what we do. The weight of the responsibility was still sinking in, but he’d returned from summer refreshed and “ready to get into it”. Asked about what kind of person he was, Hipkins described himself as upfront, inclusive and that "people won’t die wondering what I think”. Still a bit of our process to go, but very proud of our Labour team!" His care and love for his kids is something I so admire. He succeeded Poto Williams as police minister last June, following a wave of negative headlines about rising crime. A reshuffle would be worked out in the coming days. But can he turn around the Labour Party's electoral fortunes?

And that raises another diversity problem for the electorate – New Zealanders are about to have the choice of any prime minister that they want, as long as their name is Chris. Partly this is because Labour is no longer led by a woman, and once again, Labour continues to be the only party in Parliament that has never had a Māori leader. Of course, there are also numerous references to his nickname of “Chippy”, which is a contraction of his first and last name and lends him a more informal persona. And without having a Māori minister as Hipkins’ deputy, there might well be strong questions in and around the party about Labour’s real commitment to co-governance within the party itself. She thinks he will be a very strong leader: “At his heart Hipkins is a political animal. Some progressives will hope that Hipkins will throw the left a bone. He believes that Ardern won’t approve, but Hipkins will drop “some of the more unpopular policies her government was pursuing, and move Labour even closer to the median voter”. Will they just be a different face on the same policies, or will they steer a different course to the Ardern-led Labour?” Whether Hipkins is up to the task of ditching unpopular policies is discussed today by Herald political editor Claire Trevett. This will be a good indicator of how pragmatic the new Prime Minister is. He says that Labour will try to present Hipkins as more about delivery than speeches and visions: “Labour strategists have talked about needing to transition away from the old St Jacinda of Covid brand towards a good-old, sleeves-rolled-up, practical Kiwi image. This is because Lees-Galloway says Hipkins has “a strong sense of what middle New Zealand needs”.

Immigration should be a priority for incoming PM Chris Hipkins ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Business, tourism and agriculture leaders want New Zealand's incoming prime minister, Chris Hipkins, to make immigration settings a priority.

Some of those policies haven't been there for a while,” he said. Hipkins would know how to open up borders and how important it was for the sector, Morrison said. Leadership needed to slow down and give the sector time to make adjustments, Morrison said. Irrespective of who the Prime Minister was, Morrison wanted leadership to take a step back, take a breather, and look at the sheer amount of new regulations being imposed on farmers. Removing friction from the immigration process ensured a workforce would be available that the country needed to be a dynamic, innovative and growing economy, she said. Chris Hipkins' first decision: A deputy dilemma (RNZ)

Analysis - While Chris Hipkins is all but confirmed as our next prime minister, there is less certainty in the race to be his deputy.

(While there are no guarantees, it seems highly likely Robertson will stay on as finance minister which would presumably command the third ranking in Cabinet). A deputy leader needs to complement the skill set and character traits of their boss, as well as their more rudimentary demographics and geography. In a vacuum, Nanaia Mahuta would be the perfect candidate. As Labour's longest-serving MP, a minister in two separate governments and a member of Māori royalty, the Foreign Affairs Minister has the requisite mana both inside the party and Māoridom. Again, her choice would have naturally been the latter given some of Davis' struggles when filling in as prime minister, but given the importance of Māori representation within the party forcing him out would have been a dangerous move. When she took over from Andrew Little ahead of the 2017 election, her preference surely would have been to have Robertson as her deputy, given their close friendship and similar views; when Robertson made a failed run for the Labour leadership in 2014, it was with Ardern as his preferred 2IC.

Earlier today, MPs were also staying silent on their own hopes from Hipkins, who will have to do reshuffle as one of his first jobs. “Today the team will confirm Chris Hipkins as our next leader and therefore the next Prime Minister and that’s an exciting thing for all of us to be doing today.” That is expected to be a unanimous vote - there are no other contenders. “I think there [are] so many different, talented and diverse people within our caucus as a whole and ultimately it will be up to the Prime Minister to decide.” Carmel Sepuloni is understood to be Hipkins’ choice for deputy. “We’ve got a long way to go in the campaign and I’m looking forward to playing my role as a member of his team.” He said he had seen several leadership changes in Labour in his time as an MP: “this has got to be the smoothest, the most sensible and hopefully the most progressive in terms of as we move towards the election.” “For us, it’s about being a team, we are united behind our new leader and I think Chris Hipkins will be a fantastic Prime Minister,” he said. Trade Minister Damien O’Connor said Hipkins was “made for the job” and had had his support from day one - O’Connor was in Europe when Ardern resigned and had just arrived back. It’s expected Hipkins will outline when Jacinda Ardern will formally resign as Prime Minister and when he will be sworn in, which could be on Wednesday ahead of the first Cabinet meeting of 2023. Labour MPs arriving at Parliament ahead of a vote to confirm Chris Hipkins as party leader - and to select a deputy - have said the uncontested handover to Hipkins demonstrates a unified caucus.
