Mitoma magic inflicts more Brighton misery on Liverpool (FRANCE 24)

Liverpool's disastrous season suffered another blow on Sunday as the holders were dumped out the FA Cup by a 2-1 defeat at Brighton.

"We are obviously in a situation where we constantly want to make the final step. "I am pleased for his goal.” Brighton have already lost Leandro Trossard, who scored a hat-trick against Liverpool earlier in the season, to the Gunners this month.

Brighton dumped holders Liverpool out of the FA Cup thanks to a brilliant 92nd minute winner from Kaoru Mitoma as the Seagulls ran out deserved 2-1 winners to progress to the fifth round of the competition. The hosts, as expected, were without wantaway ...

But it just means we have to keep working. "We have to build. The Seagulls have outclassed many visitors to the Amex this season, but none more so than under-fire Liverpool. "After we came back from the World Cup break we wanted to go for it. In the table we stay in sixth. Last game here we couldn't have won, but this today nobody would be surprised if we had won. We make steps but we have to improve. "This was a different team to the last game. "If we don't lose Caicedo we are ready to fight for Europe," he added. To become a great team you have to win this game. "We will not fall apart, I can tell you...there were steps in the right direction," Klopp said afterwards. The result is important but the performance also.

Mitoma's magical winner for Brighton delivers knockout blow to ... (The Guardian)

Kaoru Mitoma displayed quick feet to stun Liverpool in injury time as Brighton progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win.

Tariq Lamptey and Estupiñán were under orders to bomb forward from the full-back positions and, with Danny Welbeck up front alongside Ferguson, it was a bold, can-do approach from De Zerbi. Klopp watched Dunk wobble a free-kick wide after the restart and Pascal Gross lift high. That probably talked to what had happened the last time but it also reflected the broader trajectories of both clubs, with Brighton’s alchemy nothing short of extraordinary. Brighton are flying high in sixth in the league, Liverpool languishing in ninth and Roberto De Zerbi’s team were portrayed as the pre-match favourites in some quarters. What followed was a blur of technical brilliance, the winger taking it down before slicing inside with a touch on his right foot. Cue a VAR check for an offside against Estupiñán and, when it was ruled on, the roars might have been heard in Liverpool.

FA Cup: Liverpool stunned, Ryan Reynold's Wrexham survives (1 News)

Liverpool's FA Cup title defense is over but fifth-tier Wrexham, under its Hollywood owners, is still alive and well in the famous old competition.

With 71 places between the teams in English football's pyramid, Wrexham came close to a big upset to add to a long line in its history. Wrexham beat another second-tier team, Coventry, in the previous round. But if it’s theoretically possible to go from fifth division to Premier League, why wouldn’t we do it?” Fans serenaded Reynolds, who was in one of the directors’ boxes and was standing for most of the game, with a chant of “There’s only one Ryan Reynolds” near the end of the match – when Wrexham was 3-2 ahead and looked like completing a win against an opponent that was down to 10 men at that point. Sheffield United scored its equalizer in the fifth minute of stoppage time to force a replay, meaning Wrexham — the lowest-ranked team left in the competition — will be in the draw for the last 16 being held tonight. The movie star, who co-owns fifth-tier Wrexham with fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney, flew in to watch the match at the atmospheric Racecourse Ground with one of his daughters and was put on an emotional roller coaster in a 3-3 draw against the visitors from the second tier.

Holders Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round as Kaoru Mitoma struck a late winner.

We've got everything in our squad to keep pushing on and hopefully we can go further in the competition." But we ground it out against a top side and got the win," Dunk told ITV Sport. We've been worse," Liverpool defender Andy Robertson said.

With 71 places between the teams in English football’s pyramid, Wrexham came close to a big upset to add to a long line in its history. And it was a closer contest than in the league, with Harvey Elliott’s 30th-minute opener for Liverpool canceled out by a flicked finish from Brighton defender Lewis Dunk nine minutes later. Wrexham beat another second-tier team, Coventry, in the previous round. But if it’s theoretically possible to go from fifth division to Premier League, why wouldn’t we do it?” It earned Brighton a come-from-behind win, which backed up a 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool in the Premier League two weeks ago. “This season has been nowhere near good enough.

And that was pretty much that for Liverpool, who never really looked like winning this game in the second half. The main negative was a lack of any obvious understanding the rest of the time. Klopp will feel it was poor defending, poor cover, sleepiness in the centre. The main positive here for Liverpool was the odd flicker of synergy between the front three. He glides, he skates, he dusts the ground. The Amex Stadium was a grey chilly place at kick off, with a low nautical drizzle creeping in under its swooping plastic eaves. On the other hand, this does not look like a team poised to mount an irresistible surge. Brighton would go on to win the game, deservedly, with a brilliant goal a minute and half into stoppage time. There has been talk of tired players, of the shadows of last season’s ghost quadruple, of recruitment mistakes made, of Klopp losing his magic dust. Elliott made a wonderful run through the centre as Salah scurried down the right. At the final whistle Klopp hugged Roberto De Zerbi and hand-slapped the Brighton bench. It was beautifully taken by Karou Mitoma, a footballer who is basically made of feathers, dandelion spurs and some kind of super-light high-tensile alien metal.
