Why epic California rains might not prevent a dangerous fire season ... (Los Angeles Times)

A series of January storms has left soils dampened and snowpack above average. Will this curb the upcoming fire season? Experts say it all depends.

In fact, the wet start to January could simply push the beginning of fire season later. “What we notice is at higher elevations, these kind of wet, snowy rushes tend to delay the fire season — it tends to get put off until later-than-normal time periods, probably toward the fall,” Pastelok said. Last year’s season also proved how unpredictable fire in the West can be. Also in the mix is the anticipated arrival of El Niño later this year, said Paul Pastelok, senior meteorologist and lead long-range forecaster at Accuweather. “And so this spring, evaporation rates will be higher than they would have been given the same winter storms in a cooler world.” “Obviously, the more moisture we get, the better we’re going to be,” Foxworthy said. Robert Foxworthy, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said he was so far “optimistic” about the season in higher-elevation areas, where the month ended wetter than in recent years. In 2021, dry conditions paved the way for the Dixie and Caldor fires to become the “Whereas the lower elevations, it really doesn’t matter much. that’s going to drop 15,000 lightning strikes in two days, starting a bunch of fires,” Foxworthy said. What’s more, moisture is only one ingredient in how fire season develops. But if no more rains arrive — or if other, less predictable factors such as lightning storms and heat waves develop later in the year — all that progress could go out the window.

Cosmos, Epic's massive EHR analytics platform, helps reduce new ... (Healthcare IT News)

An Epic physician researcher and a practicing maternal fetal medicine doctor collaborated on a study that produced some powerful results.

We can use this data to support further research on the best treatment regimen and goal blood pressures. Readmissions can lead to short-term separation between parent and baby, impact the success of breastfeeding, and cause increased stress and anxiety. Our hypothesis was that higher blood pressures in the hospital translated into higher values at home and an increased risk for readmission and morbidity. And perhaps most important, the Cosmos database is available to all participating organizations. We now understand that delivery is part of the treatment for the disease, but the disease lingers. Therefore, treatment and follow up for these patients is essential to promote the long-term health of new parents. Current recommendations are for blood pressure checks after discharge and education with "Post-Birth Warning Signs" for patients. When I began training, I would tell patients that "delivery is the treatment for pre-eclampsia," and there was little focus on the blood pressures after hospital discharge. While the majority of the attention for detection and timely treatment of this disorder focuses on the period before and during delivery, a significant proportion of cases occur after birth in the postpartum period. However, the relationship between postpartum blood pressure control and readmission is unclear. These changes in a pregnant patient's body, as well as the physical and emotional toll of childbirth, last for months following birth. In our study we found that postpartum patients with lower blood pressures at discharge have a lower readmission rate than patients discharged with elevated blood pressures.

Our editor selects the best new arrivals from Revolve just in time for spring. Click to see and shop the best separates for the season.

Keep scrolling to shop the tops, dresses, and denim I'm making closet space for. Since my mind is already strolling through a botanical garden with a light jacket, [my shopping habits](https://www.whowhatwear.com/nordstrom-january-sale) are reflecting this [spring state of mind](https://www.whowhatwear.com/spring-2023-runway-looks). This top is so simple, but there's something about the combination of the pocket along with the oversize fit that makes this so good. After gravitating heavily toward moodier shades like dark gray and black, I could really use the endorphin boost to make it through the rest of the season. Among the mountain of linen currently sitting on my list of wants, joyful tones like lilac and cerulean keep popping up on my list too. With the thrill of the holidays past, it's certainly harder to feel excited about stepping into a vortex of cold air and piling on every layer in existence.

Recent EHR Investments Focus on Interoperability, Patient Experience (EHRIntelligence.com)

Three healthcare organizations recently announced EHR investments that aim to drive interoperability for care coordination and an improved patient ...

"We moved to the eClinicalWorks Cloud and healow solutions to meet our organizational goals and prepare for future growth." "Our physicians played a key role in selecting eClinicalWorks, as they are the primary users of the product on a daily basis," Taylor noted. "Before eClinicalWorks, we used five different systems for clinical reporting, patient management, and more," John A. Patients will also be able to check in electronically for appointments, request prescription refills, and directly message care team members. Mooving it: Te Puke cow Chicken Wing's epic flood journey to KFC (New Zealand Herald)

The cow was swept up in floodwaters and eventually hoofed it to Te Puke's KFC.

It went to the hunting shop for a bit and was still freaking out. “I was really worried about the animals out there. Someone led it to a nearby paddock, where it stayed until it was collected by its owner. It had such a force, the whole ground was actually shaking.” There was just all of this water bursting out from the bridge. There was water as far as the eye could see, so I bolted out to the road, to Raymond Ave, because there’s a stream that comes through there,” she said.

50K a Day? Revelations from Candice Burt's Epic Running Streak (Outside Magazine)

I gave myself a pat on the back that I was able to make it through the day because that was rough.” “It made me realize, to some degree, the level of what I was accomplishing and what I’d gotten myself to that point. That surpassed the effort of Kate Jayden, a British runner who set the existing Guinness-sanctioned record of 106 in 2022. Burt has run 224 miles a week for more than 12 weeks without missing a single day, and she’s done the vast majority of it alone or with one of her dogs. Although that mark surpassed the existing women’s (11 days) and men’s records (21 days), Guinness recognized that mark in a new non-binary category, at Beverley-Waters’s request. The next day, during the race—which is considered to be one of the hardest 100-milers in the U.S. Burt says the segment of the streak that’s been the most difficult, so far, were the days before, during, and after the HURT 100 race in Hawaii. Clark reached out to Burt early on for tips on how to properly manage her recovery, create documentation logs, and a variety of expectations. “One of the things I told her is that it’s interesting the reaction that some people will have to it. Every run requires numerous photos, videos, and data for Guinness record-verification process, not to mention a witness over the age of 17. And I kind of decided on a whim to start it—which is something that both plays in my favor, but also can be a bit problematic, too. “I just kind of wanted a fun challenge,” says Burt, 41, who moved to Boulder in September.
