Prime Minister Chris Hipkins was asked if he was a fan. Eden Park said they looked forward to hosting Sheeran and they were working hard to ensure the stadium was ready to go for his shows next week. Sheeran is due to play there next Friday and Saturday - but the venue is swamped after the Auckland floods. "My favourite professional memory, I think, was getting asked to do the song for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and flying over here, staying here. "You play all the hits with fireworks and stuff like that, but it's nice to have a balance." The singer's love affair with Aotearoa - and more specifically, the capital - was no secret, Sheeran said.

Ed Sheeran forgets the lyrics, but still manages to wow Wellington (Stuff.co.nz)

How can an artist forget his own lyrics and still charm thousands of people? Answer: he's Ed Sheeran.

A young girl in the crowd who said she knew the entire song’s lyrics was invited to come up and sing Galway Girl with Sheeran. The wee lass absolutely smashed it to the delight of the crowd, singing all the lyrics to the song, even the ones that weren’t in the chorus. During the concert there was an elderly couple wearing matching Ed Sheeran t-shirts, who slow-danced together during Perfect. In some ways, Sheeran seems like he would have been perfectly happy if he had never become famous. – managed to save the show with his usual charm and kindness. Before the concert I asked Lily a few questions about Sheeran. Sheeran’s music is classically romantic in a way that brings to mind guys holding boom-boxes over their heads. Kiddo, whoever you are – every media company in the country will be trying to speak with you on Friday. But Sheeran, despite not knowing the lyrics to – Galway Girl? Half the lyrics are in the title: you just repeat with my pretty little Galway Girl until the words lose their meaning! Everyone and their mum knows the lyrics to Galway Girl. And when Sheeran appeared, playing Tides on an acoustic guitar, they cheered even harder.

His most recent album, =, struggled in comparison to the previous three, managing just two charting hits as opposed to a decent handful. He’s also running out of mathematical symbols. Not to worry. Ed Sheeran invites Kiwi fan on stage after forgetting lyrics to hit song (1 News)

The singer was performing his 2017 hit Galway Girl at Wellington's Sky Stadium when he got stuck on what part came next.

"I put my hand up and I was right in front of him and he pointed to me and said 'can you sing?' and I said 'yes' and then he said 'do you know the song?' and I said 'yes'." She said: "I was very nervous and I said to Ed I can't remember all the verses because it just went blank in my head." Pippa couldn't believe that of all the tens of thousands in the crowd, she was the one lucky enough to go on stage. She said: "He mucked up on one of his songs and then he asked the audience out of 48,000 people if anyone would like to come on the stage and sing. She bravely made her way onto the stage where she was set up with a pair of headphones and a microphone. After making a couple of attempts, and apologising to his violinist, Sheeran explained to the crowd that he was overthinking it and "psyching himself out".
