Watch: Coromandel's SH25A wiped out by extreme weather (1 News)

Footage of State Highway 25A in the Coromandel shows part of the road has been completely decimated by extreme weather that hit the region over the weekend.

"It will be a very large job to restore the road to function. Plans are being worked on for a longer-term solution, but that solution will require drier warmer weather." Waka Kotahi's David Spears said the road is fixable, but how long it will be out of action for is a question of time and resources.

"We know how vital this transport link is for the region, and we understand that people are hungry for information and want to know when the road could potentially re-open. As soon as the weather eases, the ground stops moving and it's safe for our contractors to get back on site, we’ll carry out a thorough geotechnical investigation which will give us the information we need to determine the best long-term fix for the site," says Waka Kotahi Regional Transport Systems Manager Cara Lauder. "The damage to the road is significant, the repair will be a huge piece of work, and Waka Kotahi is gearing up now so we’ll be ready to take action as soon as the storm has passed.

Waka Kotahi spokesperson Cara Lauder was also at the site on Thursday and told Checkpoint she was “stunned” at the size of the slip. “So we’re looking at is there a way to get through round the side - do another cut - or do we have to have to go all the way around the bottom and around the coast road, which is a very long diversion.” He was unsure if there could be permanent repairs on the same site or whether or a new route around the slip would be needed.
