Dutch paddlers lauded for embrace of Māori culture at Waitangi (New Zealand Herald)

The waka Te Hono ki Aotearoa (The Link to New Zealand) was carved in the Far North by master waka builder Sir Hekenukumai Busby for the Dutch national ethnology ...

“The energy of Waitangi is exactly the same as Tribal Journeys. A total of 26 Dutch paddlers are taking part in this year’s Waitangi commemorations. “In Aotearoa we have some issues with non-Māori engaging with things that are Māori. It’s the same energy with young people here.” That included the way Māori perceived themselves as being part of the natural world and “an openness and inclusivity we need in a world that is rapidly changing”. The waka project had sparked huge interest in the Netherlands and there was much the Dutch could learn from Māori. Also taking part in Saturday’s visit were Dutch ambassador Ard van den Vorst and the instigator of the Dutch waka project, former museum director Steven Engelsman. Sepuloni visited the annual waka camp at Bledisloe Domain, in Haruru, on Saturday to meet members of a waka group from the Netherlands who are the caretakers of the only Māori waka based in Europe. Sepuloni said she had visited the group when she was in the Netherlands last year and had been impressed by the genuine way in which they engaged with te ao Māori (the Māori world) and matauranga Māori (Maori knowledge). A group of Dutch paddlers who have travelled halfway around the world to take part in Waitangi Day’s waka pageant are a great example of how non-Māori can embrace Māori culture, new Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni says.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Opposition leader Chris Luxon have been formally welcomed to Waitangi in what is shaping up to be their first big face-off.

David Seymour shows his te reo skills and Chris Hipkins urges calm ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Parliamentarians have been officially welcomed to Waitangi, 183 years after the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

He said the Government should set a deadline of 2030 to attempt and settle the last historical claims. Labour and Green MPs were welcomed to Te Tii Marae on Saturday, although Hipkins did not attend the pōwhiri at Te Tii. He is from the Ngāti Rehia hapū, of Kerikeri. Seymour has whakapapa in Northland, which he recounted at the start of his whaikōrero. In fact, the Ngāpuhi treaty settlement has stalled in large due to the iwi’s strong belief that tino rangatiratanga is of greater importance than kāwantanga and implies self-governing powers. He also said ACT supported “tino rangatiratanga”, but only in the sense of self-autonomy under the Government.

Waitangi Day 2023: Te reo name given to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins (New Zealand Herald)

The name was bestowed by Far North mayor Moko Tepania during the PM's visit to Kerikeri.

“Mara” was a term of endearment used to address friends in the Ngāpuhi dialect, similar to the word “bro”. “Ta” had a similar meaning but was used around the country. The combined word was a friendly term like “bro” or “mate” that could also be taken to mean “a chip off the old block”.

to digest with the recent findings of "I think Chris really has a lot of learning to do," said Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer. "We've built a country that we should be incredibly proud about, that now ... The treaty settlement process was something New Zealanders could be proud of, he said. Te Tiriti is about honouring tino rangatiratanga, control for Māori over their lands, resources and community." the birthplace of our nation." "I don't think we should be afraid of talking about those issues," said Hipkins. I did not think this is one of the great Winston Churchill moments. "It wasn't an experiment. "If you think about the work that Chris Finlayson did with 59 treaties in nine years, I think actually having a target to shoot for, it's actually really important to make sure that we get in together and we actually do the work together." Under a National government Luxon said he would hope that by "2030 we could complete treaty settlements with all iwi that are willing to settle - then it will be possible to declare that a tremendous national reconciliation process that began in the 1990s is complete". "That we actually start off in this place, the birthplace of a nation, and we start off with great ambition and we go on a journey together over 183 years," he said.

Analysis: Waitangi eve - What went down? (1 News)

Politicians have now been fully welcomed onto the marae at the upper Treaty grounds in Waitangi, and struggled to keep the politics out of the protocol.

Asked about Prime Minister Chris Hipkins’ ballot box odds, Peters said Hipkins had had a “Shipley bump and won’t last much longer than this”. The sole use of te reo Māori was also strongly encouraged. He said non-Māori had nothing to fear and “much to gain” in confronting that. When asked by 1News whether he had considered the implications and possible associations with the phrase, Luxon said the phrase was not politically loaded in his mind and he used it because it was the theme - provided by haukāinga - for the speeches on the day. He also described the Treaty as “a little experiment” - something Greens co-leader Marama Davidson described as “a little bit patronising”. He then spoke in English, saying the Treaty of Waitangi was an “imperfect but ultimately inspiring document," and that the country was better, more open and more tolerant because of it.

Audrey Young: Such a good day at Waitangi it will soon be forgotten (New Zealand Herald)

Winston Peters, who was there, is always a willing critic. Apparently, the great crime of the day was that Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, National leader ...

Jones and his wife, Dot, may have contributed to the largely mellow mood over proceedings. Whether it was confusion or a case of the organisers changing their minds, by the time the powhiri happened, that controversy was forgotten. Both Hipkins and Luxon acknowledged that Treaty relationships will not end with the end of Treaty settlements, that it is an enduring document that will lead to changing relationships. Hipkins signalled in his speech that he is going to devote more time as Prime Minister to explaining Treaty issues to non-Maori and that the best way to avoid fear and uncertainty about the Treaty is to encourage more debate. But it was clear from his speech that he was in no way attempting to diminish the importance of the Treaty. So strong is the expectation that Waitangi must be mired in controversy that when there is none, it has to be invented.
