Morning 5: Bob Marley (Waterbury Republican American)

On this date in 1945, the great reggae pioneer Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley was born on his grandfather's farm in Jamaica. Five things about him:.

2) Before they became the Wailers, they were called the Wailing Rudeboys. Their first single as the Wailers, ‘Simmer Down’, was a No. 4) He moved back to Jamaica, converted to Rastafarianism and changed the face of world music with such albums as ‘Rastaman Vibration’ (1974), ‘Exodus’ (1977), ‘Kaya’ (1978), ‘Survival’ (1979) and ‘Uprising’ (1980).

The journalist Francis Dordor, author of the latest biography on the reggae icon, carefully documented and archived his meetings with the "Tuff Gong". Interview ...

If I had to pick just one from the list of my favorites, I’d have to say “Slave Driver” from the Catch A Fire album where I discovered reggae, the Wailers and a whole culture. “In the name of what do we fight for emancipation if not in the name of the universal?” asks the philosopher Francis Wolff. Shortly before the Wailers’ first concert in Paris, in the spring of 1977, I talked to Jacky Jakubowicz (the one from the “Jacky show” who was press agent at Phonogram at the time) about it. One thing leading to another, the thing was set up as a promotional operation. TV crews were invited to cover the event, namely a match on a field near the Eiffel Tower between the Wailers and the “Polymusclés” team, made up of people from the Parisian showbiz. The idea for the soccer game, and I don’t mean that in a boastful way, was mine. Reggae was the music of the moment. Every time he traveled, he would try to find a field just for the pleasure of kicking the ball. The Zimbabwean flag was flying in the window. The fact that he showed up in front of the press in the same outfit – a faded denim outfit – that he had worn the day before on stage. I had the chance to meet Bob Marley several times, in London, Paris, Kingston, and to follow him during the last 5 years of his life, those which correspond to his meteoric rise. But there were members of the London branch of the Black Panthers in the room and that was less cool.

Did you know Bob Marley converted to Christianity before he died? (Aleteia EN)

On November 4, 1980, in a New York City hotel, Bob Marley was baptized as a Christian, but few chronicles of the star's life mention it.

“When he toured Los Angeles and New York and England, he preached the Orthodox faith, and many members in those cities came to the church because of Bob. It is time to share, far and wide, the good news of Bob Marley’s conversion, and to hear his songs as they truly were: seeds of the Word preparing his heart—and our own—for the Gospel. Aside from the occasional nod to Rastafarianism, the event was deeply rooted in Christian song, readings, and prayer—all in a way that was respectful of the great themes of Marley’s life and work. Davis acknowledges that Marley may have been attracted to the ancient authority and mystery of the Ethiopian Church—but also wonders if the Baptism stemmed from Marley’s fear of death or a desire to please his mother, who had “been trying for years to bring him back to Christianity.” But the eyewitness accounts of those closest to Marley and his conversion are telling. Archbishop Abuna Yesehaq—a leader of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church sent to minister to Jamaicans—is the one who baptized Bob. He even said the name of his group derived from the “weeping and wailing” found in the Bible, likely referring to Jeremiah 9:10, a lament over the Babylonian conquest of Judah. We learn a few more details in a 1988 biography by Stephen Davis: the exact location of the baptism was the Wellington Hotel in midtown Manhattan. While his interest in Scripture never faded, by late 1966, Marley slowly but surely began to immerse himself in the Rastafarian view of “Jah,” the Bible, and history. In February of that year, Marley had married Rita Anderson, a Christian who converted to Rastafarianism that April when Selassie visited Jamaica. And at the heart of the Rastafarian faith was the belief that Haile Selassie (or “Ras Tafari”), the Emperor of Ethiopia, was God incarnate and the second coming of Jesus. [reggae](/2018/03/19/matisyahus-jerusalem-is-the-perfect-use-of-the-psalms-in-pop-music/) superstar and face of the Rastafarian movement into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is a true story—but also, for the most part, an untold one.

Remember Bob Marley! (newyorklatinculture.com)

Bob Marley was more than the brightest reggae star. His message was unity, democratic reform, and equal opportunity for all people.

Puerto Ricans brought that to the caserios (public housing) in Puerto Rico where it developed on mixtapes. Reggae influenced rock, punk, and reggaeton. Reggae is the root of reggaeton. For those who think reggae isn’t Latin, okay. But what he stood for was bigger than the man or his music. When one of the political parties had him shot, Marley let it go – even though he knew who did it.
