Fears grow for untold numbers buried by Turkey earthquake (New Zealand Herald)

Rescuers are racing against time to pull survivors from the rubble before they succumbed to cold weather two days after an earthquake tore through southern ...

At least 1020 people have died in the rebel-held northwest, according to the White Helmets, with more than 2300 injured. But that would likely require the approval of President Bashar Assad’s government, which has laid siege to rebel-held areas throughout the civil war. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said 13 million of the country’s 85 million people were affected, and he declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces. A large fire at the port, caused by containers that toppled over during the earthquake, sent thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. But authorities faced criticism from residents of hard-hit Hatay, sandwiched between Syria and the Mediterranean Sea, who say rescue efforts have lagged. Turkey is home to millions of refugees from the war. But rescuers did not have the heavy equipment needed to rescue her. Syria itself is an international pariah under Western sanctions linked to the war. The shaking toppled thousands of buildings and heaped more misery on a region racked by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis. In Syria, residents found a crying newborn still connected by the umbilical cord to her mother, who was dead. The death toll climbed above 7700 and was expected to rise further. Snow swirled around rescuers in parts of Turkey.

Turkey-Syria earthquake: Newborn baby saved from rubble (New Zealand Herald)

Residents in a northwest Syrian town discovered a crying infant whose mother appears to have given birth to her while buried underneath the rubble of a ...

In another dramatic rescue Monday evening in the same town, a toddler was pulled alive from the wreckage of a collapsed building. Video from the White Helmets, the emergency service in the region, shows a rescuer digging through crushed concrete amid twisted metal until the little girl, named Nour, appeared. Maarouf said he believed the baby had been born about three hours before being found, given how far her temperature had dropped. The newborn girl was found with her umbilical cord still connected to her mother, Afraa Abu Hadiya, who was found dead, they said. The rescuers found the baby more than 10 hours after the quake struck. A neighbour cut the cord, and she and others rushed with the baby to a children’s hospital in the nearby town of Afrin, where she has been kept in an incubator, said the physician treating the baby, Dr Hani Maarouf.
