NRL LIVE: Warriors running riot as star 'whacks' Tiger with Sheens 2.0 off to horror start.

Sione Fainu 22. Sione Vaihu 20. The NRL’s pre-season is set to kick off with a number of new faces lining up for both the Warriors and Tigers at Mt Smart Stadium. Brandon Tumeth 12. Brandon Wakeham 8. The Tigers have hit back with quick-fire tries to Trey Peni and Stefano Utoikamanu and a comeback looked on the cards. The second coming of Tim Sheens at the Wests Tigers is off to a slow start, with a fired-up Warriors running rampant in the first NRL trial of 2023. Montoya also picked up where he left off in the second half and crossed for his hat-trick in the 50th minute. But the fullback couldn’t make it two in two minutes, with Montoya taking a cut-out at full pace and bulldozing Staines to score his second. “First man to score a hat-trick in 2023 and there might be more to come, I don’t think he’s put his cue in the rack just yet.” Sharks recruit Luke Metcalf is having a blinder and scored the first try of the second half with a brilliant individual effort. The Warriors scored twice in the opening 13 minutes as Marcelo Montoya and Jackson Ford both crossed for soft tries at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

Wests Tigers are back in action next Sunday against the Raiders at Belmore Sports Ground as part of a double-header in Sydney. We lost momentum in the first half, there was a period we came back into it but fell away at the end... I had Webby (Andrew Webster) in under 20s at Tigers and he's still the same, a really good guy. He's really family-orientated and has got a good balance with his assistant crew. We're a long way off where we want to be but it's in a step in the right direction. Luke Metcalf steered the ship around and I thought he did really well.

Worcester Warriors renamed Sixways Rugby and pull out of ... (The Guardian)

Worcester Warriors will be renamed Sixways Rugby and the new ownership group Atlas has revealed the club will not feature in next season's Championship.

“The RFU will now consult the local rugby community over the proposed relocation of Stourbridge RFC and the change of name. The current first XV would breakaway to become Sixways Rugby and relocate to Worcester’s Sixways Stadium. What the RFU are furious about is that we’ve stood up to them on these clauses.” Other debts will also be met, but those owed to the employees and other rugby creditors of the old club will not, prompting fury among those who worked and played without security or, in some cases, payment at the start of this season. This is subject to a vote by Stourbridge RFC’s membership on Friday and, if successful, approval of the name change and relocation by the RFU. O’Toole claims his consortium had no option but to bypass the conditions set by the RFU to play in next season’s Championship, resulting in a loss of the Worcester Warriors name and business.

Did the Warriors do enough at the NBA trade deadline to win ... (USA TODAY)

Golden State's title-level core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green has an expiration date. Time will tell if the Warriors have enough.

Beyond that, it’s hard to say there was a power move for the Warriors to make. With the West this wide open, it would be foolish to underestimate the Warriors because there's always the chance they’ll get their act together by April. There was talk Thursday of acquiring OG Anunoby, who ended up staying with Toronto and would have clearly demanded a price the Warriors weren’t willing to pay. The Warriors more or less stayed the same. The 7-21 road record is the worst of any playoff contender in the West. Perhaps the thinking in Golden State was that this really just comes down to health.

The Warriors righted a wrong in getting Gary Payton II back, bringing smiles to plenty of faces.

There still are a handful of Warriors pups looking to find their way around the building. The Warriors didn't go out and make a blockbuster move like the Phoenix Suns or Dallas Mavericks. That was an error, one that didn't sit right with those who helped form one of the best dynasties in basketball history. When it comes to five-man lineups, Payton's name was included in three of Curry's top-five units for Net Rating and two of the top three. “He just has a knack for the ball, that’s why he comes up with offensive rebounds and steals. He also brings the kind of grit the Warriors have been lacking this season, an area that has been called out by Kerr and his players. He just has a knack for the ball. The 7-footer should get a chance to get game reps in Detroit and learn from his mistakes in a low-pressure situation for a 14-win team. The 30-year-old has fans galore inside and outside of Chase Center, and having him back should put a smile on the face of Steve Kerr and the players alike. Per 100 possessions, Curry and Payton created a 16.9 Net Rating with a 115.2 offensive rating and 98.3 defensive rating. Payton never wanted to leave the Warriors and was hoping the front office would push harder to keep him before he signed a three-year contract worth over $26 million for the Blazers.
