In 'You' Season 4, Joe Goldberg Is No Longer in Control (The New York Times)

The Netflix thriller's latest episodes have its antihero, played by Penn Badgley, on the back foot as he navigates the world of London's ultrarich.

In London, “not only are there people who have a ridiculous amount of money and have no idea what’s going on in the world, but they have titles,” Gamble said. “We never felt any responsibility to reform Joe, to give him a particularly happy ending,” Gamble said. It’s an evolution that Badgley is also keenly aware of: Joe is now “managing to grow emotionally, while not growing at all,” he said in a recent video interview. In Joe’s twisted mind, “he seems to actually respect her more,” he added. The stories he told himself with previous love interests, like Beck in Season 1 or Love, “stopped in those scenes with Marienne,” Gamble said. Setting the fourth season in London was, in part, a practical one: Paris would have been more complicated in terms of language and logistics. The season sees Joe “walking himself closer and closer to a self-awareness that he really won’t know what to do with,” Gamble said. Ahead of each new season, the production team ask themselves, “what kind of thriller we’re going to put him in,” Gamble said. His plans, however, are quickly scuppered when members of the ultrarich group of friends he resentfully joins start getting killed, and Joe must find the murderer before he’s framed for their crimes. (“In a more just society, we would all see Joe as problematic and not be interested in the show, but that’s not the society we live in,” Badgley [told The New York Times in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/arts/television/penn-badgley-you-netflix.html).) Not only is it set in London, but we soon find Joe on the back foot, being manipulated by a mysterious enemy who may be an even more accomplished killer. Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter — and Joe vowed to find her.

Review: 'You' turns the tables on Penn Badgley in somewhat ... (USA TODAY)

And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. Penn Badgley's psychotic stalker and murderer Joe Goldberg has his own stalker ...

It doesn't help that the "eat the rich" subgenre has been done and redone on TV and film lately, much better than "You" manages here, at least in the first part of the season. The slice of British upper-crust society "You" slips Joe into this time around seems more of a caricature, perhaps a pitfall of transporting an American series abroad. A series intently fascinated with books and literature makes its inspiration well known from the outset, as Joe peruses a stack of Agatha Christie novels, searching for a formula that will help him find out who the "you" is. Of course, his life never stays quiet, and after one drunken night out with members of the upper class and a mysterious death, Joe is involved in a new crime spree and is drawn to yet another woman, icy Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, "Call the Midwife"). And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. It might as well hit the audience over the head with a copy of "The Mousetrap."

You Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who is Joe's Stalker? (Den of Geek)

Joe Goldberg returns for another rousing game of cat-and-mouse on You Season 4 — only this time, he's the mouse.

Eventually, Joe is shocked to find that Rhys is both his stalker as well as the killer. That’s not going away anytime soon.) And now that Rhys has his number, he’s ready to deliver a dose of Joe Goldberg justice. Once he’s back in London, the news is aflutter with the news of the latest killing … There’s never been such a disconnect in the way that Joe presents himself to the outside world and what he’s really thinking in the innermost reaches of his devious brain. Thanks to his star pupil Nadia, Joe has already read “Good Man, Cruel World,” Rhys’s captivating memoir of how he went from rags to riches, pulling himself out of a childhood of trauma and poverty and ending up in the company of high society. Under the principle of Chekov’s gun — a gun in the first act will resurface by the third — it seems that Marianne will somehow come into play later in the season. Why the detective accepted a simple image of a locket as proof of her murder is perplexing, but whatever. The first half of the season establishes the cat-and-mouse game between Joe and his stalker, even revealing the man behind the shady, disappearing texts in the final few moments of the Part 1 finale. Joe’s focus immediately shifts as he scrambles to try and figure out who is stalking him, why, and what they have planned for him in the long run. When we first check in with Joe, he’s living a pretty normal life, working as a professor of literature and spending his nights curled up with a book and a cuppa in his fancy flat. It’s a delightful twist that upends the typical You narrative, putting Joe Goldberg on the defensive instead of the offensive. [You](https://www.denofgeek.com/you/), Joe (Penn Badgley) finds himself on the other side of the Atlantic.

Who Is the “Eat the Rich Killer” in You Season 4? (Seventeen.com)

The "Eat the Rich" Killer is revealed in the final episode of Part 1 of "You" season 4. Find out who the murderer is here.

Before leaving, Rhys kicks an open-flame lantern and sets the creepy cellar up in flames, but Joe and Roald manage to escape and return to London with the others. We can guess that the reason Rhys is killing his “friends” is because he legitimately *hates* them, but his true motive is undisclosed. Joe stops him but is then knocked out and chained in a medieval-style dungeon by Rhys Montrose — author, potential London mayoral candidate, and the true “Eat the Rich” killer. [Desperate to let go of his past](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42733183/how-beck-died-you-netflix/) and avoid the (many) mistakes he made, Joe — sorry, Jonathan — tries to have a “quiet European holiday.” But then he meets his coworker, Malcolm, and begrudgingly falls in with a group of super-wealthy friends from Oxford who now dominate London’s social scene. Rhys wants Joe to kill Roald, so he can frame him for the murders of Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma. Naturally (because this is You we’re talking about) Malcolm ends up dead, knife straight through the heart, in the premiere episode of season 4, part 1.

So, Rhys is trying to make Joe more comfortable with the idea of taking Roald’s life, especially after the Oxford circle showed their true colors during their weekend getaway. Season 4 is all about how rich people are just the worst, and the location Rhys chooses to play his mind games with Joe underlines this theme. From the first episode of You Season 4, we learn that a serial killer is on the loose in London. Unfortunately, the real Eat-the-Rich Killer is nearby, knocks Joe down, and drags him into a nightmarish trap. In the case of Season 4 of You, it’s only in Episode 5 that we see the story transform from a murder mystery into something darker. [You](https://collider.com/tag/you/) work as a psychological thriller in which we see the world through the eyes of an obsessive killer, every season has a turning point where Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) finds himself in the middle of a horror movie.

Highlights include her ingenious attempt to [trap a rat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KqQ-pYfaFQ) and, as you can see above, crawling and scurrying around a golf course like a delighted cat for hours on end. It’s a particularly chilling episode thanks to [Ritchie’s nuanced, deceitful and resourceful](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/doctor-who-series-11-resolution-review/) character, who continues fighting against the Daleks’ control as they force her to do increasingly evil and destructive things. Her stint as a contestant on Series 11 of Taskmaster was an utterly joyous dose of pure chaos, and despite For a certain slightly older generation, Charlotte Ritchie will always be midwife Barbara, one of the most beloved characters in Call The Midwife’s long history. Charlotte Ritchie is brilliantly sharp and wry as Alison, the friend who tries to lure the other two away from the game to actually participate in the real world every now and then, and there are also excellent guest appearances from the likes of Starstruck’s Rose Matafeo. For a certain generation, Charlotte Ritchie will always be Oregon, the naive, hopeless student trying to hide her privileged background from her rebellious new best friend Vod in hit university-based comedy-drama Fresh Meat. Her character Alison is the glue that holds the entire concept together: her accident in episode one means she’s the only human who can see and interact with the hilarious family of ghosts that inhabit Button House, her newly inherited home. Charlotte Ritchie joined the cast in Series 7 last year as Bonnie, a widow who becomes one of the vicar’s love interests, beginning a tempestuous romance which is a pleasing distraction from the fact that this tiny Cambridgeshire village seems to attract a wildly disproportionate number of murders. If you’re new to You, it’s the story of bookshop manager Joe Goldberg, who has a pathological tendency to develop dangerous infatuations with women, which usually end in lots of bloodshed and/or a prolonged stay in a plexiglass book vault. And in Season 4, Charlotte Ritchie gets the unenviable honour of playing the latest obsession of creepy-yet-handsome, ‘I just can’t help falling in love with (and then probably killing) you’ Joe, aka Penn Badgley. This award-winning Channel 4/Netflix comedy drama is a semi-autobiographical work by Mae Martin, who stars as themself, alongside Charlotte Ritchie as their girlfriend George.

Charlotte Ritchie may be the standout in the new season of You, but her real breakthrough role was in the period drama, Call the Midwife.

Much to the grief of Tom and her colleagues, Barbara succumbs to her illness, in a heartbreaking end to the season. As such, Barbara’s death had a huge, long-running impact on the continuing characters, where Ritchie’s legacy continues even in the show’s present season. This caused some animosity towards Barbara and Ritchie, where some of the show’s characters, as well as the viewers, resented their new relationship. This is quickly followed by a flourishing of her nursing talents, where one episode features Barbara aiding in the delivery of three healthy babies in one day. Ritchie’s heartfelt performance as Barbara resonated with audiences from her very first appearance, and she quickly cemented herself as a fan-favorite. The show is set in the poverty-stricken London East End of the late '50s and '60s, and follows a group of midwives and nuns who work within their local community to deliver vital medical care and support.

So with Joe not having the cleanest record and Rhys' vendetta against him as strong as ever, Rhys is sitting on a giant opportunity to frame Joe as the "true" puppet-master — which might be a good thing, as we'd finally get to see Joe dealing with Joe and his friends manage to escape despite their countryside vacation ending on a nicely smoked note, but Rhys is nowhere near done with his mission. Rhys is rationalizing his killings as a small footprint in his larger fight against the elite to make London a better place to live in. "You" Season 4 has callbacks to "Gossip Girl," the show Penn Badgley is most known for. Netflix releases the first five episodes on Feb. 9.

The series on ABC Family (now Freeform), based on Sara Shepard's novels, aired from 2010-2017 and centered on a group of teenage girls who receive text messages from someone alleging to be their dead friend Alison (Sasha Pieterse). It's hard to imagine Badgley played both Humphrey and serial killer Goldberg in the Netflix series. The CW drama, based on Cecily von Ziegesar's book, revolved around a group of elite Upper East Side teenagers tormented by texts from a mysterious "Gossip Girl" who knows all their dirty secrets. I was going to ask about The White Lotus because of Lukas Gage. And I was like, "That guy from White Lotus!" When I got the part, I had a meeting with Sera Gamble, our showrunner; John Scott, our director; and some of the other writers. There's another socialite in England who passed away a few years ago named Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, and I got a lot of inspiration from her and her talk show appearances. But in London, more so in the '90s, there was this culture in the tabloids about our royal family and the people associated with them. But there was a caveat of her being lovely and genuine. So I thought she was safe. The series does a really good job of creating very unlikeable characters or making you love a character and killing them off. I enjoyed playing the upper-class-removed-from-reality character and poking fun at it. They'd schedule 15 scenes on one day and you could work across four units; that's working across 16 episodes, potentially, on a busy period of the year. [Charlotte Ritchie](https://www.empireonline.com/people/charlotte-ritchie/) is a standout too, but this is still all about Badgley, and here he gives his best performance yet as Joe. Netflix's 'You' Season 4 Review: Penn Badgley Returns as Joe (StyleCaster)

Here's a review of Netflix's "You" season four and Penn Badgley's loveable serial killer, Joe.

But the fact is that Joe has always wanted to be seen. Joe is not the pauper. The audience knows he’s at fault; the audience knows of his corroboration and his weaseling out of binds. The real story is how Joe is the catalyst in his own narrative. For allowing him to always narrate his way out of the accountability and the lives he so needs to pay for. The Ghostface of the squad, known as the ‘Eat the Rich Killer,’ begins to play a cat-and-mouse game with Joe. Once the robbery is in place, Joe convinces himself into helping on the behalf of his helpful nature instead of his curiosity. It’s about who Joe truly is and what he’s capable of once he’s no longer hiding. As the destination to rekindling his relationship with Marienne plummets, he seems to have grown—or yearned for the ability to be seen as more than just the k-word. Some say it’ll lead to a holiday across Paris and the sights of London. Love reveals herself to be exactly what Joe swears he isn’t: a killer. Others say it may lead to a burial of miscellaneous bones.

You- Season 4 Episode 1 "Joe Takes A Holiday" Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Joe ends up going to Paris to look for Marienne after staging his murder as episode 1 of You season 4 begins. Weeks pass before he eventually finds one of ...

As a consequence, Joe can no longer duck the investigation; instead, he must identify the murderer and prevent the authorities from exposing his false identity. By providing Joe with a new persona and transporting him across the sea, the storyline continues to lead us into unexplored territory. Joe spends the night with Malcolm as well as his wealthy friends despite not enjoying their company and drinking to the brink of absolute lunacy. Joe is unable to decline and he ends up conversing with a diverse group of people. The real culprit, however, is now curious after seeing how Joe dealt with the body and seeks to learn more concerning the professor. Holder of Sundry House and Phoebe’s partner, Adam Pratt is said to absolutely love to pose as a guy of the alternative kind while constructing a temple for his friends who are extremely wealthy. Joe steps in and protects Kate from the perpetrators as a consequence of his white knight complex. Joe is able to watch almost anything that occurs inside Malcolm’s flat through the window of his new home. In actuality, Elliot has decided to stop killing, so he gives Joe a passport as well as a work permit so that he can start over as a new person in London. As Jonathan, Joe lands a fantastic position as a professor of literature, enabling him to make some money while pursuing his lifelong passion: reading. Malcolm, a fellow university professor who enjoys going out every evening and struggles with a drug problem, is among the first folks Joe meets in London. Once Joe approaches Marienne, she pulls a knife out of her purse and admits that she views him as nothing more than a murderer at this point.

Will Love Quinn Be in Part 2 of You Season 4? (Seventeen.com)

In You season 4, Joe Goldberg is now Professor Jonathan Moore and he's left every single detail of his former life behind — including his ex-wife, Love Quinn.

[Catch Up on Part 1 of Season 4 Now](https://www.netflix.com/title/80211991) Joe’s mission in Part 2 is to stop [the “Eat the Rich Killer” (IYKYK)](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42814849/eat-the-rich-killer-you-season-4/) before they strike again, so perhaps Love materializes to give her ex a word of advice (or remind him that he really isn’t the selfless martyr he considers himself to be). [season 3 finale](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42802926/you-season-3-recap/), it’s probably safe to say that Love isn’t actually alive in this scene. You Season 4 Review - IGN (IGN)

An unexpected setting and places him in the midst of a murder mystery with a strong new supporting cast create an exciting and complex two-part season.

This video covers 9 minutes of gameplay that takes place after Cal crash lands on Koboh and must seek out help to repair his ship, The Mantis.](/videos/star-wars-jedi-survivor-9-minutes-of-gameplay-ign-first) This season gives Badgley a lot to work with and great scene partners to bounce off, giving a truly complex performance that reflects on his past, his failed romances, his traumas, and what is next for him. He’s tired and not looking for any trouble, and there is a lightness to him (after literally burning everything down and fleeing the country last season) that is more controlled, mature, and open. It’s new for Joe – and new for us – to see that he may actually have a mature match that accepts his past. He’s particularly good-natured with one of his students, the jaded Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), who’s playing the younger sibling role to Joe, reminiscent of his relationship with Paco from season 1 and Ellie from season 2. Season 4 provides us with another great round of all of that and more, giving Joe a complex new situation that challenges his sense of duty, while still telling a story that’s a bloody good time.

Penn Badgley reveals he made an unorthodox demand about the show's intimate scenes.

She was really glad that I was that honest. I do truly love something of the culture there. “But I signed this contract. I signed up for this show. She was sort of almost - I want to say empowered, it had a really positive response. One of the main things was, do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always playing the romantic lead? I know what I did. “This is actually a decision I made before I took the show. “My wife is British, she was born and raised there until she was a teenager, so I just really truly did enjoy it.” “Apart from that, it was a great time, I remember it so fondly. “It’s got to the point where I don’t want to do that. “So I said to Sera, ‘My desire would be zero - to go from 100 to zero.’

'You' Season 4 Part 2: When Will It Return? (MarieClaire.com)

This time, the hunter has become the hunted, with Joe waking up from a debaucherous night to find his new frenemy Malcolm lying dead on his kitchen table.

[Guinevere Beck](https://www.marieclaire.com/culture/a30150166/is-beck-dead-you-season-2-netflix/) (opens in new tab) showed up ghost form to remind Joe what he's capable of in season 2. The clip shows flashes of some scenes, including a confrontation between Joe and Rhys, a disheveled Phoebe, a running Nadia, and Joe drawing a knife out of his waistband. [Entertainment Weekly](https://ew.com/tv/you-sera-gamble-season-3-love-death-season-4-paris/) (opens in new tab) that both she and Pedretti knew from early on that Love was going to perish. Rhys has widespread popular acclaim in London, the power of a political campaign behind him, and expert sneaking skills since he was able to get away from the fire without Kate or anyone else spotting him. They're in close proximity as neighbors, and Joe will probably need to keep his place as part of the clique (someone needs to give him some dirt on Rhys). Speaking of Kate, it's likely that she and Joe won't be able to stay away from each other very long. After he's chained Joe and Roald in the manor's dungeon, Rhys reveals via his villain monologue that he's the killer and Joe's stalker. By the final episode of the five-part drop, three members of the wealthy clique have died and Joe has to substantial evidence to help figure out who's been blackmailing him. Joe breaks himself and Roald out of their chains, and Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) rescues them through a cellar door to the outside. Joe's attempts to find the Eat the Rich killer have been...not great by the end of Part 1. There's even a good amount of romance in this wild premise, as Joe begins to fall in love with Malcolm's former girlfriend Kate. The second half of season 4, comprised of five more episodes, will be released in exactly one month on March 9.

Everything You S4 gets right - and wrong - about London (British GQ)

In You season 4, Penn Badgley's murderous stalker has hopped over the pond and is brushing shoulders with the aristocracy.

[Netflix](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/gallery/best-netflix-series-uk) is a global platform yadda yadda yadda, but let's face it, You is made with an American audience primarily in mind, and there's nothing Americans love more than getting London and the UK entirely wrong. Joe remarks in one of his million voiceovers, "I'm not sure any of these people really like each other, they're all just so obscenely rich it's like a mandatory club", and, sure, maintaining the social hierarchy is probably what's happening but what Joe is also failing to consider is that British people absolutely love misery. [London](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/lifestyle/gallery/the-most-romantic-restaurants-in-london)(ish) university. It's a [whodunnit](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/murder-mystery-films-whodunnit-2022)! While geography and slang may be leaving a bit to the imagination, there are some cultural specificities that You manages to get so right it's almost scary (like ‘Joe watching you diddle yourself through your window’ scary). More on that in a second), and for the first time in the show's four-year run he's now being stalked rather than the other way around.
