Open-plan classrooms can be very noisy. And this is bad for all students, especially those with hearing or learning difficulties.

[A$8.6 billion](https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/) on school infrastructure over the next four years. [Australian study](https://asa.scitation.org/doi/10.1121/1.4931903) compared speech perception in traditional and open-plan kindergarten classrooms and found noise coming from other classes in the open-plan setting made it more likely for students to misunderstand their teacher. The Victorian government is building “ [new flexible learning communities](https://www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au/flexible-learning-classrooms)”. Classrooms designs should not create more work for teachers, just to make sure their students can hear them - and each other - speak. This includes those with additional learning needs and those unlucky enough to be seated at the back of an open-plan classroom. For example, explicit teaching – where the teacher explains key concepts and procedures clearly and models how to solve problems to the whole class – is difficult to do well in a noisy environment. Of these, the studies showed open-plan environments had mixed effects on academic performance. Chaos in the Classroom - WV MetroNews (West Virginia MetroNews)

The problem of students misbehaving in the classroom is as old as school itself. However, disruptive student behavior has gotten worse.

The most disruptive students do not belong in the standard classroom. That drives teachers away from the profession and discourages others from entering the field. The bill may need some additional work in the Senate. A student removed from class three times in a month is either expelled from school or sent to an alternative learning center. “Others assault employees and are back in class the next day without any discipline administered,” according to the report. The disruptions interfere with learning, not only for the misbehaving student, but for the entire class.

"She does have survivor's guilt," Ruben Torres said. "Okay, Khloie's going to be -- it's Khloie," the dispatcher replies. Khloie continued offering crucial information that critics say should have prompted police action: "Send help for my teachers," she told the dispatcher. "The calls you got in from the--from one of the students," Pargas asked a dispatcher. "We had spoken about things like this happening around our nation, give them scenarios, what would they do -- things of that nature," he explained. My dad taught me when I was a little girl." Her father, a former Marine, said he worked hard to make sure Khloie and her siblings knew how to handle life-and-death emergencies in an age of mass-casualty attacks and exploding gun violence. As part of their probe, investigators are scrutinizing officers' decision to treat the incident as a barricaded subject as opposed to an active shooter. "Please hurry, there's a lot of dead bodies," Torres said. "And when I heard her voice, you know, shedding the tears already happened for me ... "Please hurry. Khloie's parents are aware that ABC News plans to broadcast portions of her 911 calls and wants them to be heard publicly.

A Dorchester District Two teacher hopes to give her students more opportunities to work in small groups to help with their learning.

“This project would mean the world to me and my students. But she says she needs more classroom supplies to make that happen. I love implementing ways for students to get engaged in math and I love being able to meet them and their interest and levels to get them to understand math,” Schultz said.
