Houses submerged, reports of residents trapped in Hawke's Bay (Stuff.co.nz)

Some in Esk Valley, where the river has burst its banks, remain trapped – including on roofs and in cars – while parts of Napier may need to evacuate.

State Highway 5 between Napier to Taupō is also closed. The issue is causing toilets to back up. Hawke's Bay Regional Council has issued an urgent notice for residents to reduce water use as much as possible. It was not yet known when it would be restored. If evacuation is required then Police and CDEM staff will be deployed to advise residents. Eskdale, Puketapu and Waiohiki areas had been hit especially hard. Trees and branches had been brought down around the city by the wind. Taradale residents are being asked to go to St Joseph's Māori Girls' School. Omahu residents without a place to stay are being asked to go to Hastings Sports' Centre. Cellphone communication in and out of the region is patchy. * Additional welfare centres are being opened.

Phone and electricity was cut off during much of the day and the District Council in Taupō sent in a chopper to see how the rural community has fared. The local emergency management group said Hawke's Bay was reeling from the effect of Cyclone Gabrielle and it was grappling to gain a full understanding of the situation. Meanwhile, Hawke's Bay Civil Defence said it could not cope with the scale of damage in the region and has asked for help from the National Emergency Management Agency. It said the town was cut off by a damaged bridge to the south and impassable roads to the north.

While we had a brief outage overnight in Taranaki, we were able to quickly restore power there. We will not take actions to bring power back before it is safe for them to do so. We are working closely with Unison and Eastland to understand the situation and develop a restoration plan to ensure power is returned as quickly as possible.
