By 8.30pm almost 70,000 Kiwis had reported feeling the quake with the official GeoNet site, including in Auckland and Christchurch. It classed the shaking as strong. That quake struck 25km west of the city at a depth of 25km at 7.45pm and was felt by at least 1154 people, some as far as Taupō. “As if a cyclone wasn’t enough, Wellington has now been struck by a moderate quake,” the captain told passengers while they were in the air. One resident of the Garden City described it as a rolling sensation as opposed to “jolty”. ZB’s Nick James, also in the capital, said it “shook all the items in my flat quite badly — swayed my apartment building from side to side for a good 30 seconds”.

Devastating Earthquakes in Southern Türkiye and Northern Syria ... (ReliefWeb)

Situation Report in English on Türkiye and 1 other country about Food and Nutrition, Health, Earthquake, Flood and more; published on 14 Feb 2023 by IBC.

Unlike Turkiye, before the earthquakes, Syria already hosted the highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the world (6.8 million estimated), with nearly 80 percent displaced for at least five years and further, 85 percent of households were unable to meet their basic needs in 2022. Meanwhile today the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released its flash appeal for the whole of Syria, calling for emergency earthquake relief funding requirement of $397.6 million dollars to meet the needs of 4.9 million in the most acute need, mainly in Northwest Syria (population 4.5 million). With immense relief efforts still, nine days in, shelter from the cold February winter is urgently needed for thousands of families in addition to basic needs for the confirmed 211,000 completely destroyed households so far where residents lost everything in the destruction. According to the Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management AFAD as of Tuesday, 195, 962 residents from the 10-city zone had been evacuated to other provinces and the Government of Turkiye estimates that over 2 million people have evacuated by their own means. The Government of Turkiye reiterated today as part of its relief efforts for its citizens that it will provide 100,000TL to families of those deceased from the earthquake, as well as reimburse for travel expenses and accommodation for up to one year. It is estimated that thousands of people still lie under the rubble in the hardest hit areas of Iskenderun and Antakya in Hatay, Islahiye/Gaziantep, and Elbistan/Kahramanmaras among other areas.

Death toll in massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria continues to ... (Euronews)

More than 41000 people have died in Turkey and Syria, after a deadly earthquake rocked the region on 6 February.

The emotional toll of such a large scale tragedy is also weighing on survivors, many of whom have lost family members and friends. Previously the grisly record was held by the 1939 Erzincan earthquake which killed 33,000 people. Sanctions imposed on the country have limited the routes into the country for aid workers and supplies, and delays in temporarily lifting them has resulted in a slow response to a situation where time is of the essence.

The tables have turned, and the opposition is now questioning Erdoğan on his responsibility for the collapse of thousands of newly-constructed buildings, which should be able to resist a quake of this magnitude. The then government of Bülent Ecevit was slow in responding to the disaster. Critics such as opposition CHP party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu argue that after 20 years in power, Erdoğan’s government has not “prepared the country for the earthquakes”. If he clings to power, Turkey will no longer be a democracy. In a democracy, Erdoğan would lose power. One big question they raise is what happened to the large sums collected through two “earthquake solidarity taxes” created after the 1999 quake. The funds were meant to make buildings resistant to earthquakes. This Brief, however, will look into the seism’s consequences for the future of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
