Cyclone Gabrielle: Body found in search for missing Muriwai firefighter (Stuff.co.nz)

Dave van Zwanenberg has been missing since a slip brought a house down in Muriwai on Monday night. A body has now been found in the search area.

“This morning, our team, working alongside police, located a body in the area where they were searching. Then we heard that several people lost their houses and everything and one fireman was [missing]. Delvin said the Muriwai community fire station had been stood down and Fire and Emergency was “wrapping welfare around families”. On Wednesday morning, Fire and Emergency’s head of Auckland and Northland response, Ron Devlin, said one of the organisation’s biggest focuses was “the welfare of our people”. Fire and Emergency chief executive Kerry Gregory earlier said the last thing rescuers wanted was to make the situation worse and that was why the process to locate the firefighter was a slow one. Fire and Emergency has located a body in the search for a firefighter missing after Cyclone Gabrielle.

The choppers have also been assisting in moving 60 to 100 people from Hastings and transporting medical supplies around the region. A clearer picture is also emerging of the devastation caused in the area with aerial shots of Wairoa showing the extent of the flood damage. On the power situation, the minister said about 144,000 households across the North Island were still in the dark. As explained by Stuff, she was due to visit the Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals centenary event in Palmerston North because of her connection as a colonel in chief.
