The Black Caps usually start favourites against England at home but not this time. In 2018 the Black Caps beat England by an innings and 49 runs in Auckland in the sides’ only pink ball test after Boult’s six-wicket haul saw the touring side skittled for 58. Since then, the sides have met seven times in New Zealand for two wins by the home side, and five draws. No significant rain is predicted across the test match. That remains the only day-night test played in New Zealand. And there’s been disruption in the buildup, too, with Kyle Jamieson ruled out with a back injury and fellow key bowler Matt Henry remaining in Christchurch awaiting the birth of his first child. They are finally back in action after an interminable wait for home cricket fans. The weather is looking partly cloudy, with a few showers after midday. The game will be broadcast and streamed live on Spark Sport and the Spark Sport app. BJ Watling (now retired) scored 205 and Mitchell Santner (not in the current squad) made 126 as the Black Caps made 615 for nine declared. Between them, they combine for 1241 test wickets as Anderson (675) edges closer to Shane Warne’s 708 as second on the all-time list. Matt Henry will miss the first test as he awaits the birth of his child. The ACC will be covering every ball live on Spark Sport from 2pm each day. Stuart Broad and James Anderson first played in the same test together 15 years ago against the Black Caps at the Basin Reserve, between them taking 10 wickets as England went on to win by 126 (one of Broad’s victims being one B B McCullum). A little bit has changed to this Black Caps side since their last home test against South Africa almost a year ago. The second test begins at New Zealand’s premier oval, the Basin Reserve on February 24. Neil Wagner (he’s playing today!) finished the match with eight wickets. Trent Boult is no longer considered for test selection after not taking a centralised contract with New Zealand Cricket while Kyle Jamieson is also out for the series after suffering a stress fracture in his back, which derails his comeback from a back injury. It is February 16 and the official home test season is ready to begin! Since then they lost three tests to England and drew twice in Pakistan.

Live: Black Caps vs England, first Test (1 News)

Join 1News for live updates of day one of the first Test between the Black Caps and Brendan McCullum's England at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

A few showers may fall on day one but the rest of the test should be played in sunny and warm conditions. New Zealand’s preparation has been troubled, made so by bad backs and babies and by travel disruptions which delayed the arrival in Mount Maunganui of some players. He joins James Anderson and Robinson in the pace attack. Preparations for both teams have been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle which ravaged Auckland and New Zealand’s northern region and east coast, leading to the announcement of national state of emergency. McCullum now can display his refined version of Bazball to a New Zealand audience which saw it in its infancy. Southee off to a superb start and he's rewarded in just the third over of the day. They're joined by those present on the banks in standing for the moment and the hats are off. Bracewell diving to his right can't bring it in with the one-handed effort. There are chances of some drizzle late in the day but we'll worry about that later. There is still a bit of green to it though. Wagner with a perfect inswinger at superb length and he beats Crawley, lipping the back pad before heading through to the stumps. A thick edge goes to third sleep and Bracewell goes low to his left, keeping it in hand this time.

Understrength Black Caps to be tested by rampant England at Bay ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Shorn of star bowlers and nearing a year without a test win – it's no shock that few people are predicting a NZ win at Bay Oval.

The Black Caps held the upper hand in both tests against an ordinary host team but twice failed to dismiss Pakistan on the last day. The test series against Pakistan held promise but produced no major reward, and then a meritorious one-day series win in that country was quickly forgotten as the Black Caps were hammered in white-ball games in India. It started in England last year when the two sides last met – in the first test series for the former Black Cap skipper, a rejuvenated home team hunted down the visitors on three successive occasions. The Black Caps however have gone six tests without a win, after the run of defeats began with a surprise loss to South Africa in Christchurch last February, which effectively scuttled their defence of the World Test Championship. [two-test series will start in Mount Maunganui on Thursday afternoon](https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/black-caps/300801134/ranking-new-zealands-dozen-test-wins-against-old-foes-england) with New Zealand hosting a rampant England side which has romped joyously through test cricket over the past year. Shorn of star bowlers, burdened with a disruptive build-up and nearing a year without a test win – it’s no shock that few people are predicting a Black Caps’ win in the first test.

Since then they have drawn five and lost two of their seven matches, both by innings to settle each of their last two tours. After Mount Maunganui, the series moves south to Wellington for the second and final Test from Feb. They kept their spots for the third and final clash in Napier, which England won to seal the series 2-1. Nearly 15 years ago, both were picked together for the first time in Wellington in the second test of the 2008 series and took 10 wickets between them to help England win. MOUNT MAUNGANUI: A diminished New Zealand will battle to bring high-flying England back to earth in a two-Test series starting in Mount Maunganui on Thursday, having been the first casualties of Brendon McCullum’s ‘Bazball’ last year. England have not looked back since McCullum and Stokes took charge but the series will be a reminder of where it all began for the Anderson-Stuart Broad pace axis.

England's Test team play their first match of the year this week in New Zealand after a successful 2022.

The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 1am UK time. The build-up has been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, with New Zealand being hit hard by the storm, but the Test series will go ahead as planned with the passing of the storm. It was a great start to life as England coach for the former Black Caps batsman McCullum, with series wins against South Africa and New Zealand.

The England pacer said "they're trying to get crowds and change the game a little bit. Some felt it in Mount Maunganui, and it was described as the biggest tremor in Wellington in a generation. Regarding the wicket, there is an even covering of grass, it looks flat and it will likely be a low and gentle-paced pitch. He shows no signs of nerves as just a Duckett single and a Pope two come off his first six balls in the Test arena. Without him, and the unavailability of Jamieson and Henry, much will rest on the shoulders of Southee and Wagner. Southee takes the new ball and from the off there is swing - Crawley avoiding temptation he surely has to waft at it. early days, I know, but the left-hander is looking good and untroubled so far, that shot - an on-drive - a great sign. The next shot is the same and far better timed but there's a man at deep mid-wicket now and it's just for one. Three runs (a single and a two) from the bat of Duckett get this Southee over under way and that's the 50. He's hitting the gaps with ease at the moment and it must be a bit demoralising for the hosts to bowl to him at the moment, the ones and twos keep on coming as Wagner struggles with his line. The first ball of this Tickner over is driven for four down the ground. The opener then pulls for four as the Kiwi pitches one too short in a nothing area and the 100 is up within 16 overs.

Wagner was the most successful of the New Zealand bowlers 4-84 but he was also one of the biggest offenders in failing to get his line and length right. But while there was little help from the pitch, the home bowlers also failed to bowl and consistent line and length and the England batters took full advantage. Having won the toss and opted to bowl Black Caps skipper Tim Southee would have hoped for more assistance from the Bay Oval pitch, but bar the first half there was little assistance for the New Zealand bowlers.

Wagner bowled Zak Crawley with his first delivery in the second over but it was a no-ball, with the seamer having overstepped his mark. It was a streaky innings by the England captain, who was caught in close for 19 with a botched pull-shot as debutant Scott Kuggeleijn celebrated his first Test wicket. But the tourists ended up adding 145 runs as Brook kept the scoreboard ticking over at a furious rate.

Whether Anderson and co can muster movement under the sun on Tuesday afternoon will go a long way to determining if this match continues to advance at pace. Taking advantage of sending down the pink ball under the lights, when batting is notoriously difficult, he trapped Williamson lbw and nicked Henry Nicholls out with a peach. The left-hander got his team off to a flyer, hitting 10 fours en route to his fifth test 50. Sure, Brook led the way with 89 from 81, but Duckett’s 84 from just 68 balls set the tone in the opening session. But they’ll also feel they bounced back well after dishing up a platter of rubbish earlier. It confirmed a couple of things.

Hard-charging England seize upper hand in NZ Test (The West Australian)

England have New Zealand battling at 3-37 at stumps after they scored 9-325 declared on day one of the day-night Test at Mount Maunganui.

Anderson then worked his magic under twilight, the prize scalp of Williamson coming after a smart DRS referral, before Crawley held on to Nicholls at slip - making partial amends for an earlier drop of Conway on nine. Only six batters in history have scored a century in the first session of a Test, an exclusive club left intact when Duckett chipped debutant Blair Tickner to cover. Duckett seized the initiative as he came within a few blows of becoming the first Englishman to make a ton in the opening session of a Test. Opening partner Duckett tucked into a series of drives and by the time he pinged his 10th boundary he had levelled the fastest half-century by an England opener, taking just 36 balls. There were a series of wild and wayward dismissals too, collateral damage in England's mission to redraw the rules of engagement. England made the most of conditions to leave the hosts battling at 3-37 for three at stumps, Anderson removing Kane Williamson for six and Henry Nicholls for four and also seeing Devon Conway (17no) dropped at slip.
