The Black Caps usually start favourites against England at home but not this time. In 2018 the Black Caps beat England by an innings and 49 runs in Auckland in the sides’ only pink ball test after Boult’s six-wicket haul saw the touring side skittled for 58. Since then, the sides have met seven times in New Zealand for two wins by the home side, and five draws. No significant rain is predicted across the test match. That remains the only day-night test played in New Zealand. And there’s been disruption in the buildup, too, with Kyle Jamieson ruled out with a back injury and fellow key bowler Matt Henry remaining in Christchurch awaiting the birth of his first child. They are finally back in action after an interminable wait for home cricket fans. The weather is looking partly cloudy, with a few showers after midday. Live: Black Caps vs England, first Test (1 News)

Join 1News for live updates of day one of the first Test between the Black Caps and Brendan McCullum's England at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

A few showers may fall on day one but the rest of the test should be played in sunny and warm conditions. New Zealand’s preparation has been troubled, made so by bad backs and babies and by travel disruptions which delayed the arrival in Mount Maunganui of some players. He joins James Anderson and Robinson in the pace attack. Preparations for both teams have been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle which ravaged Auckland and New Zealand’s northern region and east coast, leading to the announcement of national state of emergency. McCullum now can display his refined version of Bazball to a New Zealand audience which saw it in its infancy. Southee off to a superb start and he's rewarded in just the third over of the day. They're joined by those present on the banks in standing for the moment and the hats are off. Bracewell diving to his right can't bring it in with the one-handed effort. There are chances of some drizzle late in the day but we'll worry about that later. There is still a bit of green to it though. Wagner with a perfect inswinger at superb length and he beats Crawley, lipping the back pad before heading through to the stumps. A thick edge goes to third sleep and Bracewell goes low to his left, keeping it in hand this time.

Understrength Black Caps to be tested by rampant England at Bay ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Shorn of star bowlers and nearing a year without a test win – it's no shock that few people are predicting a NZ win at Bay Oval.

The Black Caps held the upper hand in both tests against an ordinary host team but twice failed to dismiss Pakistan on the last day. The test series against Pakistan held promise but produced no major reward, and then a meritorious one-day series win in that country was quickly forgotten as the Black Caps were hammered in white-ball games in India. It started in England last year when the two sides last met – in the first test series for the former Black Cap skipper, a rejuvenated home team hunted down the visitors on three successive occasions. The Black Caps however have gone six tests without a win, after the run of defeats began with a surprise loss to South Africa in Christchurch last February, which effectively scuttled their defence of the World Test Championship. [two-test series will start in Mount Maunganui on Thursday afternoon](https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/black-caps/300801134/ranking-new-zealands-dozen-test-wins-against-old-foes-england) with New Zealand hosting a rampant England side which has romped joyously through test cricket over the past year. Shorn of star bowlers, burdened with a disruptive build-up and nearing a year without a test win – it’s no shock that few people are predicting a Black Caps’ win in the first test.

I imagine Ben Stokes will be saying to Joe Root tonight, 'still play the reverse sweep because that's what we want.' "I definitely feel like it's going to be easier to bat throughout the day. "We haven't been told to go out there and play like that. It's probably going to be a bit more of a graft tomorrow, [but we'll] try a few different plans and try to force a few wickets here and there." "I felt good out there.
