RaceRanger gets a second outing at Challenge Wanaka (World Triathlon)

Following the first trial of the RaceRanger drafting detection technology at the Tauranga Half in January, the system will now be tested by the elite field.

““We have been working closely with the RaceRanger team to develop this technology and make it a really useful tool for our Technical Officials, and it is great to see it implemented at events. The official will assess the situation in real-time and can then make a decision on whether a penalty needs to be applied through the system. Following the first trial of the RaceRanger drafting detection technology at the Tauranga Half in January, the system will now be tested by the elite fields at the Challenge Wanaka event this Saturday. Currently, determination of drafting distances by athletes and the technical officials policing them are made with subjective naked eye judgements. We are looking forward to showcasing the RaceRanger system’s performance at these distances.” This is a special place and a special race, for both myself and my Co-Founder Dylan McNeice.

But the lake can cut up really rough, so it’s critical that in your prep you do plenty of open-water swimming in all conditions. This means there is currently no long-distance triathlon at Challenge Wanaka anymore.

The RaceRanger triathlon drafting detection system is being tested by elite fields at Challenge Wanaka in New Zealand.

In future, the system will detect when infringements are occurring and send this data to technical officials patrolling the course, via a tablet app interface. The rear unit features three coloured lights that signal backwards to a following competitor, providing information about their following distance. Currently, determination of drafting distances by athletes and the technical officials policing them are made with subjective naked eye judgements. We are looking forward to showcasing the RaceRanger system’s performance at these distances. I’ve been coming here for family holidays my whole life, and am lucky to now call Wanaka home; and for Dylan this race in particular, which he won three times in his racing career, has always been special.” It’s like starting out in triathlon as an athlete; every time you race, you learn something new.

Taking on Drafting: Athlete react positively to RaceRanger ... (Tri247.com)

Sebastian Kienle was among those impressed by the RaceRanger drafting detection system today at Challenge Wanaka "For me it worked absolutely perfectly.

There was one thing on the way back where I couldn’t see the light, but otherwise i would say that if it is working then it would be really helpful for us to have a fair race, and also to know how far to stay behind.” “I was with Kienle for most of the day – and it makes life easy. I think it’s a huge advance for the sport and that is going to be amazing going forward. the light that highlights that you are close to, but not in, the drafting zone], needs to be about three metres [Ed. I was approaching her and it was still on the red, and then when it went to blue within the 20 metre zone I knew, ok, now i have to make the pass. “I did see it and it was really good, I liked the feedback. You could have the confidence to put your head down and push hard, knowing that the guy behind was a good distance back and having to work just as hard. “It’s also good for the outside to see, because everyone can see the light. It was actually the move to 20 metres that caused most of our problems; it turns out that we’ve got a bit of what seems like a dead patch at around 25-30 metres. We just want to get a good baseline (system) established now that we know works, and that we can try and improve on over the next two weeks. If you get this neutral system, where you see the light in front of you, and for me it worked every single time. I definitely went into the draft zone like two or three times when i went past in a downhill, and then uphill, it turned red and then you know ‘hey, take it easy’, and if it turns blue, then it’s ‘back off’.
